Patients with severe chronic kidney disease (CKD) who develop atrial fibrillation are at high risk for stroke. The use of blood thinking medication in dialysis patients is controversial and warfarin carries a serious risk for major bleeding. The Watchman device may be an ideal therapy for this population as after implantation it allows for the discontinuation of blood thinners, thereby reducing the risk of bleeding.
This study seeks to evaluate the efficacy of nerve transfers in restoring hand function in patients with cervical spinal injuries.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness-based intervention on post-operative pain and disability among anxious patients with chronic pain undergoing total hip arthroplasty. All participants will receive an educational brochure and links to videos containing strategies for coping with pain and anxiety. The half of the participants who are allocated to the treatment arm will also receive a 10 minute mindfulness intervention called a body scan.
Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, caused by loss of healthy gut flora. Conventional treatment uses antibiotics to kill Clostridium difficile. A novel treatment uses replacement of gut flora by fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). Randomized trials have established safety and efficacy of FMT in recurrent CDAD, but no trial has used FMT for primary CDAD. This study will randomize patients to oral encapsulated FMT or oral Vancomycin.
Female participants with an episode of late-life depression (LLD) and age-matched control participants with no history of mental disorder will attend a one hour Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A 3 Tesla MRI scanner will be used to measure levels of glutathione (GSH) in the brain via magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS).
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of MR-HIFU for the treatment of uterine fibroids in Northwestern Ontario, which is a rural and remote setting.
The primary purpose of this study is to assess the equivalence of closed triple therapy Fluticasone Furoate (FF)/Umeclidinium (UMEC)/Vilanterol (VI) to open triple therapy (FF/VI + UMEC), with a comparison of both triple therapies to dual therapy (FF/VI) on lung function. This is a phase III, 4-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel group, multicenter study comparing FF/UMEC/VI (100 micrograms [mcg]/62.5 mcg/25 mcg) delivered via a single ELLIPTA® inhaler ('closed' triple) + matching placebo ELLIPTA inhaler, FF/VI + UMEC delivered via two ELLIPTA inhalers ('open' triple) and FF/VI via a single ELLIPTA inhaler + matching placebo ELLIPTA inhaler, all once daily. The total duration of subject participation will be approximately 7 weeks, consisting of a 2-week run-in period, 4-week treatment period and a 1-week follow-up period. ELLIPTA is a registered trade mark of the GSK group of companies.
The primary purpose of this study is to compare opioid use post-spinal cord stimulation implant at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 month intervals in patients who were provided with a weaning schedule by the Neuromodulation team (experimental group) versus those who wean on their own or with their family doctor (control group; standard care) to determine if one strategy is superior to the other. The secondary objectives will be to further characterize change in opioid use as it relates to pain scores, quality of life and disability from baseline to follow-up assessments. The investigators will examine changes in opioid-related adverse events and medication costs to help understand the impact of opioid weaning on the patient and the system. The investigators will also compare worker's compensation patients with non-worker compensation patients to see if they follow the same result pattern.
Clinical study to evaluate the safety and performance of the CardiAQ-Edwards™ Transcatheter Mitral Valve
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder associated with a wide spectrum of sleep disorders. In fact, insomnia and waking unrefreshed are currently considered part of the criteria for diagnosis. Recent studies show that sleep quality and symptoms of FM are inversely correlated. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of complete or partial blockage of the upper airway. Nonrestorative sleep and fatigue are common symptoms of FM and OSA and may suggest related pathophysiology or co-morbidity that is yet to be diagnosed. This prospective randomized controlled clinical trial will enroll adult FM patients who screen positive for OSA by the STOP-Bang questionnaire. OSA will be confirmed by a laboratory polysomnography (PSG) study. After undergoing further baseline questionnaires and investigations, patients confirmed to have FM with moderate to severe OSA will be randomized to one of two different treatments: 1) Treatment for FM at the Chronic Pain Clinic together with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices for their OSA OR 2) Control group receiving treatment for FM at the Chronic Pain Clinic only.
