This study allows patients to take part of the decision making between a unicompartment knee (partial ) or a total Knee replacement . Using the measures of a decision aid questionnaire which explicitly details the risks and benefits of both procedures.The study will use subjective (reported by patient) and objective data (which will be measured) to allow the determination if one option is superior to the other. Information gathered from this study will be used to assist future patients in selecting the surgical option that best fits their life style. A feasibility pilot study of a randomized clinical trial will help to evaluate the outcomes of both procedures and help shape a multicentre Canadian study.
This is a single center, open-label study to evaluate the efficacy of AKCEA-ANGPTL3- LRX for reduction of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in patients with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH).
To study the difference between participants interested in a lifestyle change when enrolled in Hans Kai or not when comparing behaviour change, social support, self health efficacy and mental health. Hans Kai is a community based, peer led program that is low cost and self sustaining, which places participants through a 9 week health school to learn skills related to improving health such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management etc. Once completed, participants form a Hans Kai group and continue meeting independently of health care providers
This research project aims to evaluate use in a clinical context of a novel imaging instrument, the Metabolic Hyperspectral retina Camera (MHRC) from Optina Diagnostics. This camera enables the acquisition of retinal images at multiple colors (up to 100 specific colors) and therefore extract way more information that can be captured with a conventional retinal camera (up to 3 colors). This additional color information available for each pixel of the image could be useful to identify signs of pathologies having manifestations in the retina. The performances of this new prototype camera will be evaluated and the acquisition procedures optimized in a diverse population of subjects.
This study seeks to answer the question: Does a single pre-operative dose of tranexamic acid have a statistically significant reduction in blood loss during orthognathic surgery? If it does, this drug may begin to be used routinely during orthognathic surgery to reduce blood loss in our patients.
The primary objective of this study is disease free survival rate at 5 years in stage IA2 (T1aN0M0 or T1bN0M0 only) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated either by surgery or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
Hypoxic cells in tumors have less oxygen than normal cells do, which leads to several changes inside the cells that lead to genetic chages making these cells resistant to treatment. The end result of this is increased tumor growth, spread of the tumor and poor outcome. Early studies have shown that [131]I-IAZA scans can help detect if there are hypoxic cells in the tumor. A [131]I-IAZA scan is a nuclear medicine test used to create pictures of the whole body after [131]I-IAZA is injected into a vein. Further scientific research will help understand how [131]I-IAZA is distributed throughout the body and how it can be used to treat hypoxic tumor cells. The purpose of this study is to : 1. Demonstrate the safety of [131]I-IAZA 2. To Determine the biodistribution and tumor avidity of [131]I-IAZA in patients with locally advanced or metastatic solid tumors. 3. To determine the optimal imaging time of [131]I-IAZA SPECT. 4. To collect data from imaging and plasma sampling for radiopharmacokinetic analysis of [131]I-IAZA. 5. To determine whole body dosimetry of [131]I-IAZA in selected patients. 6. To evaluate tumor dosimetry of [131]I-IAZA in patients with positive uptake. 7. To determine the radiation dose accrued in hypoxic tumors.
This is a study of experimental medication BMS-986205 given with Nivolumab with or without chemotherapy compared to chemotherapy in participants with previously untreated stage IV or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer.
Older and more frail adults are more often being referred for cardiac surgery. These patients are often in suboptimal health, and may be physically frail, malnourished, and have other conditions, such as diabetes, that complicate their recovery. Research suggests that a rehabilitation program prior to surgery may help improve participants' health and improve their fitness for surgery. Currently, a pre-operative rehabilitation workshop is offered at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, but this interventional, randomized study will investigate whether a more comprehensive pre-operative regime, including structured weekly exercise program, is more effective at improving health prior to surgery. Patients will be randomized to either the control group (pre-operative rehabilitation workshop ONLY) or the treatment group (pre-operative rehabilitation workshop plus exercise regime). This regime will attempt to improve patients' overall health, including their physical fitness and nutritional status. The effectiveness of this regime will be evaluated by comparing patients' physical function, questionnaires (diet, quality of life, stress) and serum biomarkers from baseline to pre-surgery to post-surgery. The Investigators hypothesize that patients that complete the pre-operative rehabilitation program will improve their health prior to surgery, and that this may result in shorter length of hospitalization and fewer complications after surgery. The study will take place over two years, with each patient's participation lasting about 3 months.
Exercise is commonly recommended as a treatment for patients who present with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Although a great deal of research has supported the efficacy of exercise rehabilitation for PAD, it is infrequently implemented into clinical practices.To date, no comparison of cardiac rehabilitation efficacy and acute exercise responses has been made between patients with PAD and patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Considering some of the parallels between the two conditions, as they are both atherosclerotic conditions, and the strong recommendations for exercise in both populations, it is worthwhile to compare the efficacy of cardiac rehabilitation responses. It is also unclear if the magnitude of response for PAD patients is dependent on biological sex and clinical presentation as this may influence the development of exercise prescriptions. This study will be a prospective two-arm cohort study with both groups (CAD and PAD) undergoing the same intervention (standard 6 month out-patient cardiac rehabilitation program offered at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Rumsey Centre). The primary variable of interest will be peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) with a secondary variable of interest being functional capacity, as measured by the 6-minute walk test. Tertiary variables of interest will include walking impairment, as measured by the Walking Impairment Questionnaire, and quality of life, as measured by the Short Form-36 health survey (SF-36).The second objective of this study is to determine if the magnitude of responses to cardiac rehabilitation for patients with PAD are dependent on biological sex or type of PAD (asymptomatic, post-surgical intervention, or intermittent claudication).Exploratory objectives include comparing acute exercise responses (prescribed exercise training load, actual training load, exercising heart rate and rating of perceived exertion) between PAD and CAD patients.
