There are about 28871 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Canada. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
One out of two adults in Canada is currently overweight and therefore at increased risk for a number of medical conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. Obesity is less prevalent in populations consuming large amounts of dietary fibre, suggesting that fibre intake could play an important role in prevention and progression of obesity and diabetes and other conditions. Several studies have suggested that fibre has a positive effect on blood sugar and may help lower body weight. The purpose of this study is to help better understand the effect of adding fibre supplementation to a low calorie diet on blood sugar control and weight loss. The investigators hypothesize that blood sugar control will improve in participants in the fibre supplementation group. Men and women, with stable Type 2 Diabetes (e.g. no medication change in the last 3 months), between 18 - 75 years of age, and with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 27 - 60 kg/m2 can participate in this study.
Hypothesis: The primary objective of this study is to assess whether using a flow measurement device, in this case the Transonics flow device, as an end-point to interventional treatment of diseased dialysis fistulae can help increase immediate treatment success in terms of quality of dialysis immediately following the treatment and increasing time to reintervention.
The most likely outcome of smoking cessation attempts is relapse, underscoring the need to advance novel treatments. Preclinical research shows that the noradrenergic system is critical for modulating drug-seeking behavior and recent findings indicate that the α1-adrenergic antagonist prazosin reduces nicotine self-administration and reinstatement. Presently, data on prazosin's effects on nicotine-related behaviour in humans is lacking. An efficient method for screening novel smoking cessation medications is to integrate human laboratory paradigms in the context of brief, randomized trials of smoking cessation that include smokers motivated to quit. This study aims to provide an initial test of prazosin for smoking cessation by implementing a brief, randomized trial that will include both human laboratory and clinical phenotypes. This approach will allow an efficient but sensitive method for medication screening that maximizes clinical validity.
This multicenter, randomized, adaptive Phase II/III study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) compared to standard taxane (docetaxel or paclitaxel) treatment in participants with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive advanced gastric cancer. At the start of the trial (stage 1), participants will be randomized with a ratio 2:2:1 to one of three treatment arms: Arm A: trastuzumab emtansine 3.6 milligram per kilogram (mg/kg) per intravenous injection (IV) every 3 weeks; Arm B: trastuzumab emtansine 2.4 mg/kg IV every week; Arm C: standard taxane therapy (docetaxel 75 milligram per meter square [mg/m^2] IV every 3 weeks or paclitaxel 80 mg/m^2 kg IV every week per investigator choice). At the end of the first stage of the study, the dose and schedule of trastuzumab emtansine that will be used in the second stage of the study will be selected by an Independent Data Monitoring Committee (IDMC). The regimen selection analysis will be made after approximately 100 participants across all three study arms have been treated for at least 12 weeks. Once a trastuzumab emtansine regimen has been selected, Stage I participants who were assigned to the treatment arm which was selected for Stage II of the study and participants who were in the standard taxane group will continue to receive their assigned treatment regimen. Stage I participants who were assigned to the regimen that was not selected for further evaluation will continue to receive their assigned regimen and will continue to be followed for efficacy and safety. In Stage II of the study, additional participants will be recruited and randomized with a ratio 2:1 to either the selected regimen of trastuzumab emtansine or to the standard taxane therapy. Participants will receive study treatment until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, initiation of another cancer therapy or withdrawal.
The primary objective of this study is to obtain preliminary (pilot) data regarding the feasibility of using dietary omega-3 supplementation in children with significant delays in language skills; a related secondary objective is to compare adherence to a dosage schedule of two easy-to-take formulations. A tertiary objective of this study is to collect preliminary (pilot) data pre- and post-supplementation to identify potential improvement of skills in a specific area of language development.
Presently, a long protocol in an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle, patients need to take Marvelon, a drug that inhibits the follicular development at the beginning of the cycle in order to better control and also plan the onset of the ovary stimulation with gonadotropin. Marvelon is taken daily as soon as menstruation starts for a period of 14 to 21 days. Ideally, it has to be taken at the same time everyday and not be forgotten. This may cause higher stress level for some users. Presently on the market, there is a ring-shaped contraceptive device inserted in the vagina at day 1 of the cycle called NuvaRing. The purpose of this device is similar to an oral contraceptive. However, the benefit of NuvaRing is that it can be left in place for a period of up to 35 days without any other manipulation and keep an adequate rate of hormone for contraception. Moreover, NuvaRing shows better hormone stability in the blood. Although the side effects and the benefits are comparable for the two treatments, some studies have shown that more patients would respect the treatment with NuvaRing and that the level of satisfaction would be higher in women using NuvaRing when contraception is needed. The purpose of the study is to compare the rate of satisfaction as well as the level of stress in women using Marvelon daily or NuvaRing with single insertion in a long protocol. Moreover, this study allow us to verify if using NuvaRing, a vaginal contraceptive releasing constant daily doses for up to 35 days will allow us to facilitate the planning of In Vitro Fertilization cycles in long protocol.
This pilot study will explore the ways to link Ontario's remedial system for convicted drinking drivers to medical intervention, assess the receptiveness of the Back on Track client population to effective medical interventions, and assess the feasibility of a full-scale trial of pharmacotherapy for convicted drinking drivers.
The investigators will test the hypothesis that in a preterm population with a gestational age of 16+0 and 36+6 weeks AmniSure PAMG-1 rapid immunoassay will be more accurate than conventional methods (speculum examination for combination of pooling, nitrazine and ferning) for the detection of Preterm Prelabour Rupture of Membranes (PROM).
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that at least one dose (0.5 mg followed by 0.25 mg) of fingolimod is superior to glatiramer acetate 20 mg SC in reducing the ARR up to 12 months in patients with relapsing-remitting MS
This study was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III study to determine the efficacy and safety of treatment with Buparlisib plus Fulvestrant vs. Placebo plus Fulvestrant in postmenopausal women with hormone Receptor-positive (HR-positive), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-negative), aromatase inhibitor (AI)-treated, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer whose disease progressed on or after mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor (mTORi)-based treatment. Patients were randomized in 2:1 ratio to treatment with buparlisib 100 mg daily in combination with fulvestrant 500 mg or placebo daily in combination with fulvestrant 500 mg. Randomization was stratified according to visceral disease status (present or absent).
