PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well Hu3S193 works in treating patients with ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or peritoneal cavity cancer.

A Phase III Trial of ZD4054 (Zibotentan) (Endothelin A Antagonist) and Docetaxel in Metastatic Hormone Resistant Prostate Cancer

Enthuse M1C is a large phase III clinical trial studying the safety and efficacy of ZD4054 (Zibotentan) in combination with docetaxel (Taxotere) in patients with metastatic hormone resistant prostate cancer (HRPC). This clinical trial will test if the Endothelin A Receptor Antagonist ZD4054 (Zibotentan) can further improve survival compared with docetaxel alone. ZD4054 (Zibotentan) is a new type of agent, which is thought to slow tumour growth and spread by blocking Endothelin A receptor activity. This trial will look at the effects of ZD4054 (Zibotentan) in hormone resistant prostate cancer patients with bone metastases compared with docetaxel. All patients participating in this clinical trial will receive docetaxel chemotherapy, which is a commonly used chemotherapy to treat prostate cancer in addition to other existing prostate cancer therapies. Half the patients will receive ZD4054 (Zibotentan), and half the patients will receive placebo in addition to docetaxel and other prostate cancer therapy. By participating in this trial there is a 50% chance that patients will receive an agent that may further slow the progression of the tumour. No patients will be deprived of standard prostate cancer therapy.

Climacteric Clinical Trial : the Use of Complementary Therapy and Hormonal Replacement

The alternative and complementary therapies are being gradually included in the Brazilian Health Unique System (SUS), as it is foreseen in the National Politics of Integrative and Complementary Practices in Brazil . However, though this thematic is also included in the National Agenda of Research Priorities concerning Health, published studies concerning this matter are quite scarce. The World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that it is a big challenge to effect the following studies: cost-effectiveness, as well as safety, efficiency and the quality of such practices. WHO also pointed out the clinical situations where they could be applied and that is why this investigation we are undertaken is fully justified. Annoying signs and symptoms which come along with the climacteric period, especially anxiety, insomnia and hot flushes, change women´s life quality and their affective, social and business relationships as well. Consequently, this can generate sadness, depression and isolation. Many women cannot undergo hormonal replacement, for several reasons: or they have some illnesses which reject hormones, or due to hypersensitiveness reactions or even economical difficulties. Also, the cost-effectiveness ratio between conventional therapy of hormonal replacement and complementary therapies which compose this study are not known yet . The complementary therapies proposed in this study concern non-invasive methods, of low cost, which justify being researched in order to verify the potential of those annoying signs alleviation.

Determining the Long-Term Effects of Prenatal Dexamethasone Treatment in Children With 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency and Their Mothers

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic disorder that affects the amount of steroids that the body forms. The most common form of CAH is 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD), which leads to cortisol deficiency and causes the development of mature masculine characteristics in newborn, prepubescent, and grown females, and prepubescent males. Prenatal treatment with dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, has been shown to reduce the masculinization of genitalia. However, the long-term effects of dexamethasone on the children who received it as fetuses and on mothers who were exposed to it while they were pregnant have not been determined. This study will investigate potential long-term adverse side effects of prenatal dexamethasone treatment in children and young adults who received dexamethasone as fetuses and their mothers who were exposed to it during pregnancy.

In major orthopaedic surgery of the lower extremities both continuous spinal anesthesia (CSA) and combined spinal epidural anesthesia (CSE) are safe and reliable anaesthesia methods. Our results suggest that both continuous spinal anesthesia and combined spinal epidural anesthesia provide good surgical conditions with a low incidence of complications. The sensory block level and hemodynamic changes were lesser with CSA.

Aquatic Physical Therapy in Fibromyalgia

Objective: To investigate whether patients undergoing aquatic physiotherapy in groups improve their functional capacity, by means of the distance covered in the six-minute walk test (6WT), and to compare this with a control group. Methods: Forty women that had not been practicing regular physical activity for one year were randomly allocated either to the Study Group (SG) to undergo an aquatic physiotherapy program in groups applied twice a week, including aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening and relaxation for 12 weeks, or to the Control Group (CG), which did not do any physical activity. Both groups maintained their treatment with medications. All patients underwent two evaluations: one at the start and the other after 12 weeks.
