Photodynamic Therapy With Red Leds in Microorganisms Related to Halitosis

Halitosis is the term used to describe any unpleasant odor relative to expired air regardless of its source. The prevalence of halitosis in the population is approximately 30%, of which 80-90% of the cases originate in the oral cavity resulting from proteolytic degradation by gram negative anaerobic bacteria. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been widely used and with very satisfactory results in the health sciences, it involves the use of a non-toxic dye, called photosensitizer (FS), and a light source of a specific wavelength in the presence of the oxygen in the medium. This interaction, is capable of creating toxic species that generate cell death. The advantages of this approach are to avoid resistance to target bacteria and damage to adjacent tissues as the antimicrobial effect is confined only to areas covered by the dye and irradiated by light acting on the target organism rapidly, depending on the dose of light energy and power output. The objective of this controlled clinical study is to verify the effect of aPDT in the treatment of halitosis by evaluating the formation of volatile sulfur compounds with gas chromatography and microbiological analysis before and after treatment. Will be included in this research young adults in the age group between 18 to 25 years with diagnosis of halitosis. The selected subjects will be divided into 3 groups, G1 aPDT, G2 Scraper and G3 aPDT and scraper. All subjects will be submitted to microbiological analysis and evaluation with Oral ChromaTM before, after treatment and followed up of 7, 14 and 30 days For the evaluation of the association of the categorical variables will be used Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact Test, to compare the means will be used tStudent test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and to analyze the correlation between the continuous variables will be applied the correlation test by Pearson. In the analyzes of the experimental differences in each group the Wilcoxon test will be used. For all analyzes a level of significance of 95% (p <0.05) will be considered.

Ivabradine to Prevent Anthracycline-induced Cardiotoxicity

Anthracyclines are associated with cardiotoxic effects. Previous studies suggest that enalapril, and or carvedilol, protect against cardiovascular effects of these drugs. Ivabradine selectively reduces heart rate through inhibition of the cardiac pace maker IF channel, thus prolonging the duration of spontaneous depolarization in the sinus node. Additionally, ivabradine might preserve myocardial perfusion without negative inotropic effect and probably maintain cardiac contractility despite the reduction of heart rate. Ivabradine has been shown to improve outcome in patients with heart failure and angina. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether ivabradine might prevent anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity.

Analysis of Cortical Biomarkers for PD

Previous studies revealed changes in the pattern of cortical electrical activity of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and suggested that these changes may be dependent on the phenotypes of the disease and other related factors. A greater understanding of cortical electrical activity in PD patients may be relevant to guide professionals about the therapeutic use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The present study aims to evaluate the pattern of brain activity of PD patients and to correlate the findings with the disease phenotypes and with other clinical characteristics. For this, volunteers with PD and healthy will participate in a single experimental session in which behavioral and electrophysiological assessments will be performed.

Arthroscopic Versus Open Brostrom for Ankle Instability

Background: Ankle sprains are among the most prevalent lesions in primary care. A substantial number of these ligament lesions will develop ankle instability and require a surgical procedure. The Brostrom-Gould technique is the standard surgical approach for this condition, providing excellent results over the years. Thru the last decades, the arthroscopic Brostrom has gain popularity and support by several studies. Yet, there is no consensus regarding the best procedure to treat ankle instability nowadays. Hypothesis: The arthroscopic Brostrom technique will present better levels of pain and function when compared to the standard open approach. Design: blinded, in parallel groups, multicentric, randomized, clinical trial. Materials and Methods: 98 patients with a diagnosis of chronic ankle instability, referred from primary or secondary health care services, will be assessed and enrolled in this study. Participants will be divided in two groups (randomized by sequentially numbered identical envelopes, which will be administered serially to participants), one containing the open Brostrom repair technique and the other comprehending the arthroscopic Brostrom approach. The assessments will occur in 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 weeks. Patients will be evaluated primarily by complications and secondarily the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Foot Function Index (FFI) and the 36 Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The investigators will use Comparison of Two Proportions via relative frequency analysis, the Pearson Correlation the Chi-Square test and the ANOVA for statistical analyses. Discussion: This study intends to establish if the arthroscopic Brostrom technique can produce excellent and reliable results when treating chronic ankle instability. A shorter surgical time, a better cosmetic appearance and a smaller soft tissue injury would support the choice for this procedure if the outcomes could be compared to the open approach.
