Filter by:Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The association of alcohol consumption with cardiovascular disease is mediated by a functional polymorphism of alcohol dehydrogenase 1c, but the effect of this polymorphism on alcohol metabolism is only investigated in vitro. The risk reduction of moderate alcohol consumption for cardiovascular disease is explained largely by an increase of HDL cholesterol, but an increase of adiponectin concentrations after moderate alcohol consumption may also be involved. It seems likely that adiponectin is a mediator for the association of moderate alcohol consumption with type 2 diabetes. The mechanism by which moderate alcohol consumption increases adiponectin concentrations is unknown, but ppar-gamma activation may be involved. effects of this polymorphism on mediators of this relation are not known. This study therefore investigates the effect of moderate alcohol consumption and the influence of alcohol dehydrogenase 1c polymorphism on ppar-gamma activated gene expression and risk factors of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
The purpose of this study is to compare two types of exercise stress testing to find the best method for detecting heart disease in women.
Determine whether increasing arterial distensibility by decreasing advanced glycation end-product (AGE) cross-link components of vascular stiffness improves (a) endothelial-mediated vasoreactivity at rest, as assessed by flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD), and (b) endothelial-mediated vasoreactivity after exercise, as assessed by pulse perfusion-mediated vasodilation (PPMV).

The primary objective is to show whether rimonabant reduces the risk of a heart attack (MI), stroke, or death from an MI or stroke in patients with abdominal obesity with other cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. The secondary objective is to show whether rimonabant reduces the risk of MI, stroke, CV death, or CV hospitalization in these patients.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of dietary cholesterol administered as whole egg or egg white (control)on muscle mass gain with resistance training in a young old population of men and women (age 50-69). It is hypothesized that dietary cholesterol will be significantly associated to muscle mass gain.
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether a daily intake of dried broccoli sprouts will improve the endothelial function of the participants as measured by Flow mediated dilation (FMD) The dried sprouts are chosen because broccoli sprouts are known as containing large amounts af the glucosinolate glucoraphanin which in vitro and in animal models has been shown to have a positive effect on the endothelium as measured by NO release.
The purpose of this study was to determine if Irbesartan compared to Placebo would reduce the risk of vascular events such as heart attack, stroke, non-cerebral thromboembolic event and death in patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and with at least one major risk of vascular events.
The prevalence, incidence, and severity of atherosclerotic disease all markedly increase with age. Basic experimental and observational data demonstrate that aging magnifies the pathologic and clinical consequences of established risk factors and is the most potent individual risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis and for adverse outcomes following an ischemic event. These findings suggest that normal aging alters the vascular substrate so as to promote the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The age-associated changes in vascular structure and function include an increase in central vascular stiffness, intimal proliferation, and endothelial dysfunction. The major hypothesis is that the above alterations in vascular substrate (i.e. vascular age) are an important determinant of the age associated increased likelihood for the development and progression of coronary atherosclerotic disease. This program will non-invasively characterize vascular age and atherosclerotic burden in BLSA participants and individuals with successful aging, i.e. those with no or minimal evidence of coronary atherosclerotic disease, and those with premature, clinically evident coronary artery disease. It will repeat measures of vascular age and atherosclerotic burden three years after the first assessment. By examining the impact of vascular age on the initial extent and the progression of atherosclerotic burden over a two to three-year period, it will test the hypothesis that vascular age is an important determinant of the ageassociated increase in atherosclerotic disease....
Maintaining exercise participation among patients who have completed cardiac rehabilitation is integral to secondary prevention of coronary events and cardiac re-hospitalization. To promote exercise maintenance after completion of a 12 week Phase II rehabilitation program, we propose to offer a theoretically-based intervention that we have used successfully to promote exercise among older, primary-care patients. This program (Maintenance Counseling) includes brief advice from the Cardiac Rehabilitation case manager at Phase II program discharge followed by telephone-counseling based on the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change and Social Cognitive Theory. Health educators will provide the telephone-based intervention over 6 months. Using a randomized controlled design, 180 patients will be assigned to Maintenance Counseling or Brief Advice plus Contact Control. Outcome assessments will include an exercise tolerance test (baseline/post-rehabilitation and 6 months), self-reported exercise participation, motivational readiness for exercise, and objective activity monitoring at baseline, 6, 12 and 18 months.
