Objectives: General objective: To determine how acculturation to United States has influenced the health and cancer risk among a US migrant Sri Lankan population. Specific objectives: 1. To determine the prevalence of cancer and cancer related non-communicable diseases among Sri Lankan Sinhalese living in the greater Houston area. 2. To study the distribution of risk factors for cancer in this population. 3. To study the pattern of utilization of methods available for early detection of cancer in this population. 4. To study and compare the findings of this survey with that of the siblings of this population living in Sri Lanka.

The endothelial growth factor (VEGF), has been implied in the genesis of diverse Neovascular disease. In the industrialized and developing countries, the main cause of blindness is the diabetic retinopathy. Bevacizumab (Avastin, genentech, Inc., San Francisco, California, the USA) is a drug.In the last years its use "off-label", in ophthalmology field, has become popular. This is due to its proven safeness and effectiveness for the treatment of diverse ocular diseases. A lot has been speculated about the systemic absorption of Bevacizumab. It is for that reason that the objective of this study is the systematic and random revision of the fellows eyes, of the patients programmed for the intravitreal administration of Bevacizumab, with bilateral macular edema. Combined Alexandrite and Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment of Port Wine Stain Birthmarks

Port wine stain is a congenital, progressive vascular malformation of skin involving post-capillary venules that occurs in an estimated 4 children per 1,000 live births. Approximately 1,200,000 individuals in the United States and twenty-six million people worldwide have Port wine stain birthmarks. Since most of the malformations occur on the face, Port wine stain is a clinically significant problem in the majority of patients. Port wine stain should not be considered a cosmetic problem but a disease with potentially devastating psychological and physical complications. Personality development is adversely influenced in virtually all patients by the negative reaction of others to a "marked" person. Port wine stain are initially flat red macules, but lesions tend to darken progressively to purple, and by middle age, often become raised as a result of the development of vascular nodules. Hypertrophy of underlying soft tissue further disfigures the facial features of many patients.

Head Movement Effect on Different Tracheal Tubes

A breathing tube, which is used to secure the airway and allow ventilation of the lungs during general anaesthesia, is inserted into the windpipe either through the nose or mouth. In children, different formulas exist to determine the appropriate size of the tube according to age, and how far it should be advanced into the airway. Head movement can alter the position of the breathing tube, making it go in or come out too far. Different types of breathing tubes may also differ in their change of position with head movement. The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of the formulae commonly used in our institution for depth of breathing tube placement, and to measure the degree of tube displacement on head movement with different types of tubes.

Medication in Early Diabetes (MED) Study

This study compares metformin (current first-line medication) to pioglitazone (a newer diabetic medication currently approved for combination use). Whilst there is good evidence for the benefits of pioglitazone use in other populations, in light of the known weight gain effects of pioglitazone we believe further assessment is required in Indigenous Australians (in whom there is a strong predisposition for central fat deposition). This study will provide evidence regarding the medication appropriate for first line medication in Type 2 diabetes in this high risk population. This study will assist clinicians to make evidenced-based decisions regarding initial medical management of those with Type 2 diabetes (where there is currently a gap in evidence).
