Software-based Modification of Hand Tremors in XR

The following trial evaluates the effect of Tremor Stabilization Algorithms on involuntary hand tremors suffered by Parkinson's patients. These algorithms will be implemented in Virtual Reality (VR). Approximately 300 study subjects are to be randomized to experimental (VR plus algorithms, i.e., intervention) and active comparator (VR only, i.e., control) study arms. Study subjects will perform a postural tremor test (PTT) to elicit postural parkinsonian tremors. Our primary outcome is whether the intervention modifies tremor severity.

Prognosis and Influencing Factors of Asthma in Children Aged 5-12 Years

The goal of this observational study is to 1)analyze the basic information of confirmed cases of asthma in children aged 5-12 years old hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from 2009 to 2020, 2)investigate the onset of asthma after 13 years old, 3)conducte lung function, blood and airway inflammation indicators, blood IL13 and IL1RL1 levels, 4)analyze the prognosis and influencing factors of children with asthma in this age group.Participants will be asked to fill a case report form and questionnaires. Besides, they should provide examination results like lung function, total IgE, expired nitric oxide, blood and sputum granulocyte counts, and determination of blood IL13 and IL1RL1 levels over the past 6 months.

At present, there is no empirical data that specifies the likely prevalence of purpose in life disruption among various clinical populations. Between one-third and one-half of cancer survivors report some degree of existential distress during or after their treatment, but these findings are not specific to the domain of purpose in life. To address the aforementioned gap, we propose to conduct a survey study to determine the prevalence of purpose disruption in two clinical populations and determine if the prevalence of purpose disruption in these populations is different from that of a normative population.

Comparing Activated Carbon Cloth Dressing and Silver-Based Dressing in a Diabetic Foot Ulcer Population

One of the common complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) is Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU), which can subsequently lead to infections, gangrene, amputation or even death, if necessary care is not taken to curb with the condition. Despite the rapid advancements in the medical industry, diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is considered as a major factor of morbidity and a leading cause of hospitalizations among diabetic patients. The risk of ulcer progression that may ultimately lead to amputation is elevated upon the development of DFU. It is estimated that DFU contributes approximately 50-70% of all lower limb amputations. In addition to rendering emotional and physical distress, DFU is also responsible for causing productivity and financial losses that lower the quality of life. The economic burden of the patients is further aggravated by the medical expenditure involved in the healing of DFU and/or lower extremity amputation. This study focuses on usage of a modern primary wound dressing in managing diabetic foot ulcer. The primary dressing used in this study is an activated carbon cloth dressing, which is applied directly to the wound bed and the "holes" in the net give access to the activated carbon which is made up of millions of micropores and within the walls of these micro pores, there is presence of electrostatic forces known as Van der Waals forces, which helps to trap and kill microorganisms such as MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In addition, the dressings can regulate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) which are responsible for prolonged inflammation in chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers, and able to promote fibroblast migration and accelerate granulation tissue growth via its conductivity.

This project aims to produce a solution for the rising incidence of dementia. This is particularly pertinent in Tasmania, Australia, with a rapidly ageing population and the oldest demographics of all Australian states. The team will develop TapTalk, a new screening test that detects risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. TapTalk, will record a person's hand movements and speech patterns with a smartphone. Computer algorithms will learn which patterns of data are associated with AD pathology. This innovative test is based on: (i) emerging research that fine motor control required for hand and speech movements is sensitive to early AD pathology and (ii) the investigators' new machine learning methods.

Palliative Care for Patients With Liver Cirrhosis

Background: Patients with liver cirrhosis rarely receive palliative care although the Danish Health Authorities and WHO recommend it. The lacking palliative intervention is probably owed to a physician culture focused on life-prolonging active treatment at any cost and unclarities, and misperceptions about palliative care, which is perceived by many as exclusively for cancer patients and something that marks the end of active treatment. Study aim: Measure the effect of palliative care on the patient burden, caregiver burden, and the utilization of healthcare services. Study design: Prospective multi-center intervention study with end of study at the patients' death. We will use a 3-faceted endpoint 1) Patient burden measured by change in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, 2) caregiver burden by a change in Zarit Caregiver Burden Questionnaire, and 1) health care system burden as the difference in number, length, and indication for hospital admissions and need for outpatient services. Patients: We will prospectively include 200 patients with liver cirrhosis (approx. 50 from each of 4-5 sites: Esbjerg, Herlev, Hvidovre, Århus) who have 2 or more items checked on the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool. Control groups will be identified from two non-participating hospitals and matched regarding age, gender, number of comorbidities, and alcohol and caregiver status. Methods: The intervention will be advanced care planning with conversations and actions built around a standardized symptom identification tool (EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL). Advance care planning is the collaborative process between patients and health care professionals of planning future health care. The assignment of a contact nurse to each participant is a key part of the intervention. Results: We will measure patient and caregiver burden at inclusion, after 4-6 weeks, 4-6 months, and every 6 months until the patient dies. All use of health care services will be registered. The use of health care services during the terminal 2 years will be compared that of control patients.

Impact of Exercise Groups on Patient Mental Health and Wellbeing in an Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit

More research is needed to elucidate the impacts of physical activity interventions on short- and long-term activity and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in psychiatric inpatients and to support its advantageousness when compared to current standards of care. To investigate the impact of regular exercise on activity level, NPS, and sleep in an inpatient psychiatry unit, the investigators propose a placebo-controlled study with measures of activity, mood, anxiety, energy, and sleep as primary outcomes in 50 psychiatric inpatients at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Given the challenges of maintaining blinded assignment to treatment arm, the investigators will compare patients during two time periods (3 months each): the first is treatment as usual (TAU), the second adds exercise intervention (EXI).

One initial study has shown that Botulinum Toxin (BT) in combination with zinc supplementation may increase the duration of effects BT treatment. This initial study was in the context of facial aesthetics. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect, if any, of oral zinc supplementation prior to BT in the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia. If positive effects will be observed, this would help reduce the burden of disease for these patients.
