Horticultural Therapy (HT) uses plants, gardening, and the close relationship between well-beings and plants. It integrates effort, hope, expectation, harvest and the enjoyment of whole process to help people with disabilities. During the process, patient can learn more about themselves and experience the nature. It can be traced to 1798, Dr. B. Rush found farm work helped people with mental illness. Today, horticulture therapy is well applied in disabilities, elderly and children. It needs detailed evaluation for the condition of illness to achieve optimal efficacy. It contains two parts- to sense and to operate! Patients can relax themselves and learn to work with others, realize the responsibility of caring another life, understand their relationship with environment. Patient can tolerate frustration better via acceptance the withered plants. In cultivation, it trains patient the occupational technique ( to operate instrument), communication, social skill, independence, stable mood. Based on studies, 0ne third patients with mental illness stabilized after treatment. However, aggressive rehabilitation is necessary to maintain their function. In our study, it plans to incorporate horticulture therapy into psychiatric clinical practice in our hospital. We plan to recruit horticulture therapist, visiting staffs, residents, occupational therapists and nurses to participate the design and operation in class. This program will recruit patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, organic brain syndrome and other mental illness in our daycare. We will help patients with personal treatment record. We will use case study to report some typical cases. All the cases will be investigated qualitatively with intensive interview to explore the subjective experience on this therapy. We will also use simple questionnaire to found quantitative study in the further. To sum up, this program helps the connection for horticulture therapy and psychiatric rehabilitation. It promotes " patient-centered" support and offers physical, mental , social, spiritual services. It not only produces academic performance but fulfills the ideal of holistic health care!
Purposes: 1. To investigate whether patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are at higher risk for exercised-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) due to baseline airway inflammation compared with age, gender, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls. 2. To investigate the effect of 3-month continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on EIB for patients with severe OSAS.
ECP will be given to the patients [UVAR®XTS TM Therakos system, Johnson & Johnson] according to the following schedule: Starting at day 21 after transplant, if hematologic recovery allowed it: 2 ECP per week the first 2 weeks, and 1 ECP per week during 1 month. Total = 8 ECP after transplantation.
Aims of Research Proposal: 1. To build a DNA bank in association with a comprehensive database of treatment outcomes and toxicities of cancer patients. 2. To carry out genotyping of potential candidate genes in relation to specific anti-cancer agents and to correlate genotype with treatment outcomes and toxicities. The investigators hypothesize that genetic variations between different individuals and ethnic groups may account for inter-individual and inter-ethnic differences in treatment response and toxicities to anti-cancer therapy. The understanding of the contribution of these genetic variations may help to individualize therapy to optimize treatment outcomes and reduce toxicities. Patients will be recruited from the National University Hospital Cancer Centre. Any individual aged 18 or above who has been diagnosed with cancer is eligible. 20 ml of blood will be collected from each subject for DNA extraction and pharmacogenetics analysis. At the time of recruitment, demographic characteristics, cancer history, and past and present cancer treatment history of the study subject will be collected. The patients' progress will be followed up periodically (approximately every 6 months) through the medical records, and subsequent cancer treatments, progression of cancer, and survival outcome will be updated. Follow-up will occur until death. Important treatment information that will be collected include the drug regimen, drug doses, intent of treatment, aematologic and non-haematologic toxicities, and hospitalization episodes that may be related to treatment. Known functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of drug metabolizing enzymes, transporters and targets of different anti-cancer agents will be characterized. More comprehensive genotyping will be carried out in 'outliers' who experience exceptional toxicity or biological response to identify novel functional SNPs using high throughput sequencing techniques. Correlation will be made between genotype and treatment-related outcomes (tumor response, progression-free survival) and toxicities. For selected patients, lymphoblastoid transformation will be carried out to maintain an infinite supply of DNA.
The primary aim of the Erlangen´s Glaucoma Contrast Sensitivity-Study (EGCS-Study) is the evaluation of the diagnostic and prognostic validity of a diagnostic procedure, measuring contrast sensitivity. No therapeutic studies are performed.

This randomized controlled trial will assess the effect of adding intensive physical activity counseling to an outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program. Counseling including real-time feedback on daily activities from an activity monitor will be offered to improve participation in physical activities in daily life during and after an outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program.
In this study the effects of genetically modified potatoes on the human metabolism will be observed. Healthy volunteers receive for one week muffins, produced with starch from a genetically modified potato or with a normal available starch, in a randomized trial.
The adverse impact of Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) on the health of veterans and on the resources of the VA Healthcare System underscores the need to resolve its underlying cause. In response, the investigators propose to investigate the central hypothesis that gut bacteria may be responsible for symptoms associated with GWS. The investigators will enroll a total of 120 patients with GWS and 90 healthy controls.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the physical and psychological side-effects in the course of treatment with IFN-alpha. The effectiveness of a specific intervention for the management of these side-effects is evaluated.
