Evaluation of Photodynamic Therapy in Pericoronitis

In order to reduce the chances of systemic dissemination of the infection and the use of antibiotics, it is mandatory to test effective treatments in the initial phase of pericoronitis aiming to avoid the evolution of the infectious disease. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an interesting alternative because it is an effective antimicrobial treatment that is easy to perform and does not cause bacterial resistance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with methylene blue in a surfactant vehicle in pericoronitis in the initial phase in healthy youngsters through microbiological, clinical and immunoregulatory response. The impact of pericoronitis on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of these patients will also be evaluated. 34 healthy young patients with pericoronitis will be evaluated. Microbiological analysis will be performed by RT-PCR for the bacterium Tannarella forsithia (Tf).Gingival crevicular fluid will be collected to evaluate TNF-α, IL1-β, IL-6 and IL-8 and IL-10 by the Luminex assay. The variables will be pain (visual analogue scale), edema, trismus (digital caliper) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) will also be evaluated through the OHIP-14 questionnaire. The variables will be assessed at T1 (baseline)and T2 (4th day after PDT).

Post-operative tissue oedema is one of the main causes of failure of hypospadias repair. Severe oedema may disrupt the suture line, invite infection and result in repair failure. Thus, we suggested that local injection of corticosteroids in just below coronal sulcus into dartos and buck's fascia may limit this oedema thus improving the outcome of hypospadias repair.

Genetic Pathways Leading to Fatty Liver and Atherogenic Dyslipidemia

The aims of the study are: 1. To investigate if carriers of apolipoprotein (apo) CIII loss-of-function (LOF) mutations produce less apo-CIII that results in reduction of large very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particle secretion as compared to non-carriers of these variants and compare the results with carriers of apo-CIII gain-of-function (GOF) to elucidate the role of apo-CIII in hepatic lipid metabolism. 2. To study if carriers of the TM6SF2 E167K and PNLPLA3 I148M mutations produce less large VLDL particles to transport fat out of the liver as compared to non-carriers. 3. To test whether the specific mutations in the apo-CIII, TM6SF2 and PNLPLA3 genes are reflected in changes of liver de novo lipogenesis (DNL), liver fat, Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), plasma lipid and apolipoprotein kinetics and fasting concentrations in carriers of the TM6SF2 E167K and PNLPLA3 I148M mutations as compared to non-carriers. 4. To study the effects of APOE, angiopoietin (ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8) or endothelial lipase (LIPG) genotypes on liver fat metabolism, lipid and apolipoprotein metabolism and lipid phenotypes.

A Study on the Prevalence of Mutation of Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis (CTX)

This is a prospective, non-drug epidemological cohort study aimed to investigate the relatives of these cases with CTX-specific gene mutation and clinical features of CTX disease over CTX index cases diagnosed with CTX disease throughout the clinics in Turkey. Relatives included in the study (relatives of CTX index cases) will be taken into clinical and genetic evaluation. Relatives will not receive any experimental intervention or treatment because of their participation in the study. Therefore, this study does not include a treatment protocol or does not have a predetermined visit flow chart. However, relatives of CTX index cases should give consent to genetic testing.

Safety Study Based on Transcranial Electrical Stimulation in Chile: a Case Series Study

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that delivers low-intensity, direct current to cortical areas facilitating or inhibiting spontaneous neuronal activity. It has been used to improve cognitive functions such as memory, language, and attention. Research has also shown that tDCS on motor cortex can improve motor performance. TDCS secondary effects have been measured in several studies. The most frequent secondary effects described in literature are a mild tingling sensation, moderate fatigue, itching sensation, slight burning and mild pain sensation under the electrodes during the stimulation. The present study is focused in evaluate the safety of a transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) service by measuring secondary effects incidence in a group of healthy subjects. In addition, manual dexterity and upper limb strength will be measure to identify improvement in motor performance after intervention.

Getting Into Light Exercise for Patients With Heart Failure

Despite scientific advances in treatment, patients with heart failure experience daily distressing symptoms and mortality rates are high. Although standard exercise improves numerous physical and psychological symptoms in heart failure patients, exercise participation rates are very low because of exercise barriers. Our research is aimed at understanding whether home-based gentle types of exercise such as yoga, delivered via video-conference, are beneficial in patients with heart failure. Challenging conventional strategies and breaking down barriers to care by testing new types of exercise delivered via tele-health (ipads) are urgently needed to improve the distressing symptoms that heart failure patients face daily.

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study, the side effects of these drugs will be compared - suvorexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist and zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) A agonist - in healthy controls comparable in age and gender to the target military population.
