Filter by:Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Brazil, and its treatment, namely surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy, has consequences and side effects that significantly affect the quality of life and associated physical and psychological factors. The practice of physical activity, in turn, may play a beneficial role in these factors, and help the recovery of the patient in relation to the consequences of the treatments. Two types of physical activity can be addressed in the context of breast cancer; Dance and the Pilates method. Thus, the objective of the present study will be to analyze the impact of Pilates practice and dance on quality of life and on psychological and physical factors in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. Patients older than 18 years who are in adjuvant treatment, namely, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and / or hormone therapy at the Oncology Research Center - CEPON, will be invited to be part of the study. With a randomized clinical trial of three arms, the patients will be submitted to 16 weeks of intervention, and randomized in 3 groups: (A) belly dance protocol group; (B) Pilates method protocol group, and (C) control group who will continue with their routine activities. Sample randomization will be conducted in confidence by one of the researchers in a specific computer program. Information about personal and clinical characteristics, quality of life, psychological factors (depressive symptoms, body image, self-esteem, optimism, perceived stress, fatigue, pain, sexual function and sleep quality) and physical factors (cardiorespiratory fitness, balance , Posture, upper limb functionality and presence of lymphedema). All information will be collected before and after the intervention period. Statistical analysis will use the statistical package SPSS - IBM, version 20.0. Firstly, descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and percentage) will be used in order to know the data, and then the Anova two way test with repeated measurements and Sydak Comparison Test, in order to analyze the data. Groups of the Pilates method, of the dance and control group. Significance level of 5%.
80 children aged 5-13, BMI≥85%, will be recruited to a program for the treatment of overweight children. The intervention group will use the app "Just Dance Now" and The control group will be exposed to the usual program without the app. Measurements will be performed at the beginning of the program, the end and 3 months after completion of the intervention.
Fitness athletes emphasize the value of staying lean, muscular and defined, and motivates and inspires followers through social media. We want to study the effect of such lifestyle on selected aspects of psychological and physical health in female fitness athletes, and compare the outcomes to a healthy, physically active female population.
The main purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of a multicomponent intervention, applied during one scholar semester, on body composition, strength, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, lipid and metabolic profile, and body image of students from sixth to ninth grade. This is a non-randomized controlled design. Approximately 568 schoolchildren of grades sixth through ninth were recruited from 2 public secondary schools in Florianópolis, Brazil. The main component of the intervention entitled "MEXA-SE" (move yourself) consisted of the implementation of three physical education classes per week with aerobic exercises, strength and flexibility activities. In addition, play activities in school recess, and educational activities on physical activity, sedentary behaviour, eating habits and body image were performed. Data collection was performed before and immediately after 14 weeks of intervention. The primary outcomes included the body composition, strength, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, lipid and metabolic profile, and body image. Other variables included were: physical activity level, sedentary behaviour, and blood pressure level. Other components of the lifestyle (e.g., eating habits), psychological (e.g., self-rated health) also were evaluated in the participants. Descriptive analysis, two-way ANOVA for mixed models and ANCOVA will be applied for within and between comparison groups, if the premises of this test are met. The level of significance for the study was 5% for two-tailed tests.
The present study seeks to examine the course of body image, social avoidance and psychosocial aspects of depression and anxiety over time in burn patients. Gaining a better understanding of the effects of burn injury on body image in burn patients over time could help us to better understand the psychosocial sequelae of burns and to identify potential interventions which may serve to improve the quality of life in burn patients.
Investigate body image of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, correlating with self-esteem, function and quality of life.
Background: Midline incisional hernia is reported from 0,5 to 11% after abdominal operations. Primary repair without mesh reinforcement is almost abandoned because of high recurrence rates (24 to 46%). Use of prosthetic mesh in incisional hernia repair lowered the recurrence rates under 10%. Recurrence rate alone is not the main quality criterion for incisional hernia repair anymore. Large series and meta-analyses confirmed the value of laparoscopic repair as at least equal if not better compared with open repair. Discomfort, pain, diminished quality of life and body image alteration influences functional well being. No baseline information exists in any of these fields treating pre- or post-operative phases in patients with incisional hernia. Respiratory functions and medico-economic evaluation are other rarely investigated fields that we consider in our trial. The objective of this study is to analyse the functional outcome status of patients after laparoscopic incisional hernia repair compared to open repair. Methods: A randomized controlled non-blinded clinical trial is designed to compare laparoscopic incisional hernia mesh repair with open repair on post operative pain, health related quality of life outcomes, body image and cosmetic measurements, respiratory functions, recurrence rates, and cost. Volunteers will be recruited in Geneva University Hospital, department of surgery, visceral surgery unit. Eligibility criteria is male patient aged over 18 years, with reducible incisional hernia who are candidates for elective surgery and medically fit for general anesthesia.30 patients will be enrolled for each group. Follow-up will take place at 10th, 30th days as well as 3 12 and 24 post operative months by questionnaires and by clinical exam by independent expert. An overall cost-analysis will be realized. Patient enrollment in the study will start in April 2008 and estimated to end in september 2009.
The focus of this study is the development of a school-based multimedia product for the prevention of body dissatisfaction and unhealthy weight control behaviors in adolescents. The program is being designed for early adolescents, age 12-14, and will include information on maturation, healthy eating and exercise, skill building modules and media literacy awareness.
