Filter by:Background: During the first half of the 20th century, scalp irradiation was a standard treatment for induction of epilation in children suffering from Tinea Capitis. These children are now more than 50 years old and the aim was to investigate the possible association between their childhood low dose irradiation exposure and development of carotid atherosclerotic disease in adulthood. Methods: The study included 145 individuals treated by irradiation in their childhood, and 150 matched control subjects with no history of irradiation. B-mode ultrasound imaging and US Doppler were used to measure carotid and femoral stenosis and Intima-Media Thickness (IMT). Blood samples were taken for lipid profile and homocysteine evaluation.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Atorvastatin on the coronary atherosclerosis plaque morphology.
It is well known that HIV-infected subjects frequently experience hyperlipidemias, insulin resistance, and visceral adiposity, which are known to increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Several cohorts have shown an increased risk of heart disease in people with HIV. The effect of HIV treatment versus HIV itself on the incidence of heart disease is unclear. In this study the investigators will assess the effect on carotid IMT of the initiation of antiretroviral combinations that are known to have a minimal effect on lipids and insulin resistance. We will also assess the changes in several inflammation and cardiovascular markers,as well as endothelial activation markers, and how these changes relate to therapy-induced changes in immunologic, virologic and metabolic markers.
1) Research questions: 1a. Can non-sonographer health care professionals in a community medical office practice setting be trained to detect and evaluate subclinical atherosclerosis? 1b. Can carotid ultrasound performed in community office practices improve physician use of evidence-based, risk-reducing interventions and patient motivation to adhere to therapeutic recommendations?
This is a prospective study of 7th grade students participating in the CPR Anytime® program. After consent, participants will be asked to complete the program with their parent(s)/legal guardian(s) and encouraged to include other friends and family members in the program. After completing the program, the participant and their parent(s) will be evaluated for adequacy of chest compressions/CPR. The student participants will be evaluated again at 6 months for adequacy of chest compressions/CPR Objectives: 1. To evaluate 7th grade students for adequacy of CPR and chest compressions after completing a take home CPR course 2. To evaluate the multiplier effect of students training in CPR with their parents/family members using a take home CPR instructional kit 3. To evaluate the participating parent for adequacy of CPR and chest compressions after completing a take home CPR course Research Hypothesis: 1. 7th grade students can be trained, using CPR Anytime®, to perform adequate chest compressions/CPR and their skills will be maintained at 6 months 2. As part of the multiplier effect, an additional 1.5 family members per participant will be trained to perform adequate chest compressions/CPR
The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of correction of anemia using erythropoietin on the progression of atherosclerosis and cardiac muscle thickening in patients with chronic kidney disease
To test the association between anti-Chlamydia serum titers and anti-Mycoplasma antibodies with Acute Coronary Syndromes.
To investigate the diagnostic performance of whole body magnetic resonance angiography (WB-MRA) using subsystolic venous compression of the thigh.
Multiple clinical trials, using 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins), have shown benefit in the primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic complications. However, till now, there is an incomplete understanding of all the mechanisms of the biologic effects of statins beyond LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction, but there is accumulating evidence that the Rho-GTP/Rho-Kinase pathway (Rho/Rho-K) plays an important role and may be a strategic therapeutic target in cardiovascular diseases. With similar LDL-C reduction ability, the availability of Ezetimibe offers the potential to begin to address the question whether some of the benefits conferred by statins may accrue independently of their effects on LDL-C lowering. A better understanding of the role of the Rho/Rho-kinase signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in human is essential. Inhibition of Rho/Rho-kinase by statins may explain some of the biological beneficial effects of statins observed in clinical trials. This study aims to translate into patients important experimental discoveries regarding the initiation of inflammation in atherosclerosis in an attempt to improve upon the present treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Investigation of how the patients experience whole body MRA. After the WB-MRA the patients will fill in a questionnaire, that contains questions about the WB-MRA procedure and how the patient felt during the examination. We expect that the patients will report a high degree of satisfaction with the WB-MRA procedure, with little discomfort.
