Influence of Anxiety on Motor Learning and Motor Imagery Ability in Young Population

In motor learning, to consider that movements are produced by the cooperation and combination of many brain structures and are influenced by the emotions to which individuals are subjected is essential. Several neural circuits have been identified that closely link the emotional system and the motion control system. Anxiety is defined by persistent and excessive worries that do not disappear even in the absence of the stressor. Anxiety has been found to produce inefficiencies in information processing, which can result in performance deficits, as well as self-reported anxiety has been linked to poorer working retrieval performance. In these stress and anxiety contexts, relaxation techniques have been widely used to reduce psychophysiological arousal levels. Understanding how movement, emotions and interactions are regulated is significant because of the large number of movements humans perform. Of these, manual tasks represent precise movements that require the integration of many elements by the nervous system to perform these tasks successfully. How anxiety influence the way manual tasks are learned is still unknown. On the other hand, motor imagery (MI) is a cognitive process that is an important contributor to how movements are planned and executed. The use of MI has been recommended to improve movement learning and task execution. Knowing MI capacity is essential for creating effective and individualized MI programs. However, how a relax intervention can affect the motor imagery ability in anxiety people is still unknown. The aim of our study was to find out whether a relaxation intervention prior to MI practice in subjects with anxiety can influence the learning of a precise manual task not previously trained on four parameters of fine motor control: time, error, speed, and accuracy. On the other hand, the aim is to determine if the ability of internal visual, external visual, and kinaesthetic imagery varies when the anxiety participants are subjected to relaxation. The investigators expect that participants with anxiety, to whom relaxation is induced, will show better motor performance on the fine motor task and better motor imagery ability. In contrast, the investigators expect that participants with anxiety, to whom relaxation is not induced, will show poorer motor performance on the fine motor task and poorer motor imagery ability.

Aromatherapy Versus Gum Chewing on Preoperative Anxiety

The Effect of Emotional Freedom Technique on Depression, Anxiety and Distress of Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis

Volunteers over the age of 18 who applied to the Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the last three months, one month after the initiation of treatment and accepted the study, will be included in the study after their eligibility to the sampling criteria is evaluated. EDSS will be applied to the individuals by the specialist physician and they will be directed to the MS daycare unit. Since it is a randomized controlled experimental study, the sampling and follow-up measurements will be carried out by a psychologist in the unit where the study is applied, who does not carry out EFT. Scales will be applied in the daily unit and will be randomly divided into two groups at the beginning of the study. The psychologist who chooses the sampling will not know which group the participants will fall into, and the EFT practitioner will not know the anxiety, depression and psychological distress levels of the individuals participating in the study. EFT will be applied to one of the groups, and the other group will continue their routine treatment. Individuals with multiple sclerosis in the experimental group seven days at intervals, six sessions in which one session lasts 30-45 minutes will be included in the EFT application. SUDS will be applied before and after each EFT session. At the same time, resting heart rate and blood pressure will be measured in the EFT group before and after each session. Depression, anxiety and psychological distress levels of individuals with MS will be evaluated with HAD and SUDS at the beginning of the study, at the end of six sessions and in the first month.

Neurotherapeutics as an Adjunctive Approach to Enhance Exposure Outcomes in Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and costly to the individual and society. Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold-standard intervention for anxiety disorders, although this approach does not fully reduce symptoms for all individuals. Therefore there is a need for innovative intervention approaches. One approach to augment and improve existing therapies would be to enhance the neurocognitive basis of fear extinction processes, which are the model on which treatments are based. Enhancing these processes may be possible through computerized cognitive training techniques which target executive functioning, the cognitive processes that help people manage complex cognitive activities. The proposed project is a proof-of-concept pilot study investigating the potential for training of executive functioning to improve anxiety-related outcomes. Individuals with elevated levels of social anxiety will be randomized to single-session COGnitive Enhancement Training (COGENT) or sham training program (ST). All participants will complete a single speech session where they present three 7-minute impromptu speeches and rate their anxiety at specific intervals. Participants will then complete the COGENT paradigm and affective processing task while undergoing fMRI.

Reduction of Perioperative Anxiety Using a Hand-held Video Game Device

Distraction techniques, such as use of a virtual reality device, have been used to augment or replace pharmacological practices for relief of anxiety in pediatric patients prior to surgical procedures. This relief can not only benefit medical staff, as procedures may be easier to perform and require less time, but also have a calming effect on the the parent during the procedure if they feel that their child is being better cared for. In addition, decreased anxiety prior to surgical procedures have been shown to reduce maladaptive behaviors post-operatively. This prospective study plans to evaluate the anxiety level of parents and pediatric patients in an outpatient surgery center pre-, during and post-operatively with and without the use of a virtual reality distraction device. The goal is to determine the existence of correlations between distraction techniques (in this case, the use of handheld video games) pediatric patient anxiety, parental anxiety, and parental satisfaction with the experience surrounding the procedure.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is the only movable joint between the joints in the head and neck system. It is a component of the chewing system and is involved in important functions such as speech, swallowing, taste and breathing. Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is the general name given to various musculoskeletal problems seen in the stomatognathic system, mostly affecting the masticatory muscles and/or TMJ. TMD is the second most common musculoskeletal pain after chronic low back pain. Patients with TMD may also complain of other musculoskeletal problems, craniocervical problems, sleep problems, and anxiety disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate, compare and examine the relationship between neck dysfunction, headache and temporomandibular dysfunction severity, anxiety and sleep quality in female individuals.

Urinary Incontinence and Anxiety in Pregnancy

This prospective case-control study aimed to evaluate the impact of presence, and severity of urinary incontinence (UI) on pregnancy related anxiety. The study included 160 pregnant women with uncomplicated pregnancies at the second trimester. The pregnant women with UI (n=80) were compared to the control group including continent pregnant women (n=80) in terms of Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Scores (PRAQ-R2) and Incontinence Consultation Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) in pregnant women. Pelvic Organ Prolapse Questionnaire (POP-Q) was considered for the diagnosis of pelvic organ prolapsus. The UI was also divided into subgroups as stress (SUI), urge (UUI), and mixed (MUI) types and they were also compared to the control group.
