Smokers living with HIV represent a major health disparity population in the United States and the world more generally. Major contributing factors to the maintenance and relapse of smoking among smokers living with HIV include increased exposure to multiple stressors associated with HIV, which often exacerbates anxiety/depression. In a previous project, the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a 9-session, cognitive-behavioral-based intervention to address smoking cessation by reducing anxiety and depression via specific emotional vulnerabilities (anxiety sensitivity, distress tolerance, and anhedonia) was tested against an enhanced standard of care in a pilot randomized controlled trial (NCT01393301). It was found that when compared to a brief enhanced treatment as usual control, patients in the intervention achieved higher short-term and long-term smoking abstinence rates. In this project, the investigators seek to test this same intervention in a fully powered, 3-arm efficacy/effectiveness trial. The goal of this study is to randomize 180 smokers across three sites to test the efficacy/effectiveness of the intervention at increasing point prevalence abstinence by reducing anxiety and depression at a 1-month follow-up (the end of treatment timepoint/ approximately 1-month post quit day) and a 6-month follow-up (approximately 6-months post quit day).
The purpose of the study is to compare two teacher trainings developed to assist elementary students who struggle with excessive anxiety. The goal of both teacher trainings is to improve teachers' knowledge and skills for identifying and assisting students with excessive anxiety. The first training program is called TAPES (Teacher Anxiety Program for Elementary Students) and involves a 6 hour teacher training. Teachers in this training program will implement anxiety reduction skills in the classroom and complete 5 brief (approximately 30 minute) meetings with the student and his or her parent(s)/guardian(s). The second training program, Teacher Anxiety Training (TAT), involves a 3 hour teacher training. Teachers in the TAT condition learn to implement anxiety reduction skills in the classroom, but do not conduct individual meetings with parents and students. The investigators do not know if TAT and TAPES work equally well, or if one is better than the other. Both will be administered by teachers to see if they help youth with excessive anxiety feel less worried.
This early-stage trial aims to examine the feasibility, tolerability, and safety of Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) or an active comparison condition in 75 participants with clinical anxiety and depression.
Prazosin has shown effectiveness in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder through improving sleep quality and global functioning. Given the significant evidence for its utility in treating PTSD, in combination with the fact that many anxiety symptoms overlap with PTSD (e.g.insomnia, hyperarousal, and irritability), it is essential to evaluate its potential effectiveness in treating symptoms of other anxiety disorder and patient tolerability.
To explore reliable neuroimaging biomarkers for anxiety disorder and OCD,and whether there are shared imaging biomarkers between different subtypes of anxiety disorder and OCD, the investigators included30 drug-naive general anxiety disorder (GAD),30 drug-naïve panic disorder(PD),30 drug-naïve social anxiety disorder,30 drug-naive.obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and 30 healthy controls by using a combination of cross-section and longitudinal study designs, including a longitudinal study in patients with anxiety disorder and OCD with 4 weeks of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine treatment. The investigators will also evaluate the severity of symptom, social function, cognitive function and treatment response.
Third molar extraction is the most common surgical procedure in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and usually cause anxiety. Although different informed consent methods have been used previously, the most effective information method that provide the optimum anxiety management is still not clear. Therefore, investigators planned a clinical study to explore the effect of different information formats (verbal information with written document and verbal information with written document subsequent to watching video from internet) on peri-operative anxiety of the participants who scheduled to undergo impacted lower third molar surgery. Also, investigators aimed to explore the effect internet usage before the third molar surgery on the level of anxiety.
Virtual Reality exposure therapy (VRET) is an efficacious treatment for anxiety disorders but has yet to be implemented in regular care settings. This is arguably due to the limitations of the past generation of VR technology, which was expensive, inaccessible, cumbersome and hard to use. With the advent of consumer VR technology, VRET is now ready for implementation in regular care. This multiple-baseline trial will examine the effectiveness of VRET for public speaking anxiety (PSA) when delivered under real-world conditions at an ordinary, non-specialized mental health clinic, by clinical psychologist with only brief VRET training. Participants will either be self-referred specifically for this treatment, or come through ordinary clinical channels. Self-rated PSA will serve as primary outcome measure and will be measured three times prior to treatment (at screening and twice after a diagnostic screening telephone interview) , four times after onset, at the end of the treatment period, and three months after treatment.
Currently, there are limited options in the management of anxiety and panic attack symptoms in the Emergency Department (ED). The most common treatment method is the use of anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications; however, these drugs have serious health risks which make them ineffective as a long-term treatment option. The CalmiGo handheld device, formerly known as "myReLeaf", provides an alternative early intervention option in treating patients presenting with anxiety and panic attack symptoms by using guided breathing, aromatherapy, and grounding techniques. The hypothesis of this study is that CalmiGo will provide a drug-free, early intervention, and long-term treatment option in the ED that will improve patients' anxiety and panic attack symptoms. Patients who present to the ED with anxiety or panic attack symptoms will be considered eligible for this study. These patients will be approached, and they will give informed consent to participate in the study. Patients will be enrolled in the study which consists of completing validated surveys asking about their anxiety and panic symptoms, using CalmiGo, and allowing investigators to access their medical records. These surveys will be completed before and after using CalmiGo in the ED to measure the presence and severity of anxiety and panic symptoms. The goal of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of using CalmiGo to improve anxiety and panic attack symptoms based on validated survey responses. Overall, this study seeks to identify CalmiGo as an effective and alternative early intervention treatment option for patients presenting to the ED with anxiety or panic attack symptoms.
