Filter by:It has been hypothesized that because music has the ability to motivate, promote relaxation, alleviate pain and anxiety levels, to distract, and facilitate positive emotional states; thus it will enable healing by reducing anxiety levels which are associated with expected pain, hence patients are more unperturbed. In addition, several studies in the past have also identified that music listening can reduce the need for analgesics before surgery and after surgery to alleviate pain, reduce the period of post-operative pain and aid in the recovery period. While most studies which had administered music listening in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU), had found significant findings compared to patients that did not listen to music; there are few others which found otherwise. Over decades, time and again, researchers have tried to understand how non-pharmacological interventions have been utilized in a spectrum of rehabilitation settings in populations to stimulate convalesces. This is because non-pharmacological interventions have been recognised as valuable, simple, safe, and inexpensive adjuvants to pharmacological approaches in pain management and therefore is valuable during post-operative rehabilitation especially. This research is necessary because it hopes to address the gap of knowledge concerning the effects of music in post-operative pain, anxiety objectively in a specific population, and during an explicit time frame in a public hospital setting in Malaysia and whether by listening to music, the patients will require lesser amount of opioids analgesics. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of music on pain and anxiety during post-operative period in patients with closed shaft femur fracture at University of Malaya Medical Centre.
This study evaluates the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a therapy-assisted internet-based intervention in patients with ischemic heart disease and co-morbid depression and anxiety referred for cardiac rehabilitation. Half of the patients will receive the intervention and the other half usual care. We hypothesize that the intervention will lead to a reduction in patients' symptoms of depression and anxiety and be cost-effective.
The objective of the LEGO®Bricks MRI project is to study a new play-based tool for use in children preparing to undergo MRI and evaluate its ability to reduce the need for anesthesia. A randomized study design will be employed in the experimental "Child Life" (CL) group, in regard to which Child Life intervention patients will have. Age matched controls will be found retrospectively, and will be patients of the same age, undergoing their first non-contrast brain MRI with no Child Life intervention. Patients in the CL group will be prepped by a Certified Child Life Specialist with the use of one of the following 2 tools, to be randomly selected: 1. LEGO Bricks model MRI (A model of the MRI machine and adjacent control room made out of LEGO bricks) 2. Mock MRI tube (A six foot long pop-out play tunnel for children, with a diameter of around 17 inches to simulate the MRI magnet bore)
This study investigates he effects of intra-operative music on anxiety levels during procedures under spinal anaesthesia at a surgical centre in Cambodia. Participants will be randomly allocated to either the music (M) group or the 'control' (C) group. The M group will receive music played through headphones for the duration of the operation. The C group will receive no music or headphones. Anxiety will be measured in both groups, through a visual analogue scale (VAS), at the beginning of the operation and after 30 minutes of the procedure. Scores will be compared.

The prevalence of mental health problems among college populations has risen steadily in recent decades, with one third of today's students struggling with anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder (ED). Yet, only 20-40% of college students with mental disorders receive treatment. Inadequacies in mental health care delivery result in prolonged illness, disease progression, poorer prognosis, and greater likelihood of relapse, highlighting the need for a new approach for detecting mental health problems and engaging college students in services. The investigators have developed a transdiagnostic, low-cost mobile health targeted prevention and intervention platform that uses population-level screening for engaging college students in tailored services that address common mental health problems. This care delivery system represents an ideal model given its use of evidence-based mobile programs, a transdiagnostic approach that addresses comorbid mental health issues, and personalized screening and intervention to increase service uptake, enhance engagement, and improve outcomes. Further, this service delivery model harnesses the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of behavioral scientists, college student mental health scholars, technology researchers, and health economists. This work bridges the study team's collective leadership over the past 25 years in successfully implementing a population-based screening program in more than 160 colleges and demonstrating the effectiveness of Internet-based programs for targeted prevention and intervention for anxiety, depression, and EDs. Through this study, Investigators will test the impact of this mobile mental health platform for service delivery in a large-scale trial across a diverse range of U.S. colleges. Students who screen positive or at high-risk for clinical anxiety, depression, or EDs (excluding anorexia nervosa, for which more intensive medical monitoring is warranted) and who are not currently engaged in mental health services will be randomly assigned to: 1) intervention via the mobile mental health platform; or 2) referral to usual care (i.e., campus health or counseling center). Participants in the study will be enrolled for 2 years and asked to complete surveys at baseline, 6 weeks, 6 months, and 2 years.
This study will assign participants with anxiety to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with computerized cognitive training (CCT). In addition, the study will have a control group and enroll age- and gender-matched anxious children assigned to CBT. The hypothesis of this trial is that CCT with CBT will further increase task control network (TCN) activation and connectivity. Both groups will have one CBT therapy session each week for 12 weeks. However, for participants in the CCT arm plus CBT they will also receive up to 4 weeks of at home CCT to complete during the two weeks prior to the first CBT session and during the two weeks after the first CBT session. CCT is to be done at home for approximately 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. Additionally, participants in the CCT arm plus CBT will receive CCT for 30 minutes just prior to CBT sessions 4-12. Each group will also have pre and post therapy functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and be asked to complete anxiety severity interviews and questionnaires throughout the study as well as after the treatment. This study will examine the effects of smartphone-based lifestyle medicine (LM) for alleviating depressive and anxiety symptoms in Chinese population. Since a range of lifestyle factors are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of depression and anxiety, modifying different lifestyle factors simultaneously, for example, diet, exercise, stress and sleep which are empirically supported by previous reviews, may be effective to reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms. Traditional Chinese medicine concepts will be integrated into the app to increase the acceptability towards mental health treatment. Through this study, we aim to promote evidence-based patient care and to improve help-seeking and access to evidence-based interventions for depression and anxiety.
Oral Health Literacy is an integral part that should be taken into measures when evaluating the oral health status of any population. It has been stated that adults with low oral health literacy are more prone to miss their dental appointments and that low levels of oral health literacy, and being anxious and fearful of the dentist is a common barrier to the utilization of dental services. Unfortunately no previous studies assessed the oral health literacy level, dental anxiety and utilization of dental services among the Egyptian population. So the aim of the current study is to detect the impact of oral health literacy on level of dental anxiety and utilization of dental services among Misr International University (MIU) dental patients.
Volunteers with a prescription of oral sertraline who have been scheduled to bariatric surgery in either Norrköping/Sweden or Lindesberg/Sweden will be asked to participate in a observational study. The aim of this study is to evaluate the absorption and the effect and side effects of sertraline in volunteers 8 weeks before and 1, 6 and 12 months after bariatric surgery.
