Efficacy of Iron Bisglycinate in Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnant Women

Anemia in pregnancy is defined by the World Health Organization as hemoglobin levels of ≤ 11 g/dl. Globally, a prevalence rate of 38% was estimated by the World Health Organization for pregnant women.Treatment of iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy remains a main public health issue. Oral iron salts have been recommended for treatment of iron deficiency anemia e.g. ferrous fumarate. Increasing the dose of ferrous fumarate will subsequently increase the bioavailability of iron preparation, however it also increases the frequency of gastrointestinal tract side effects e.g. nausea, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and black stained stools. Besides, the increased bioavailable ferrous fumarate may decrease by many foods and / or chelating drugs in the gastrointestinal tract which interfere with its absorption leading to variability in the hemoglobin correction during the treatment. Ferrous bisglycinate is an iron amino acid chelate. It is formed by reaction of ferrous iron with two molecules of the amino acid glycine by a covalent bound in a process called chelation. Ferrous bisglycinate is claimed to have better patient compliance because of fewer gastrointestinal tract side effects. It is also claimed that ferrous bisglycinate improves iron absorption, storage and increase hemoglobin level better than the conventionally used iron salts.

Maternal Nutrition Interventions in Uttar Pradesh, India

Maternal nutrition has been a long-standing concern of health authorities globally and in India. Despite the availability of proven, affordable interventions, and progressive policies and program platforms such as Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) services, a streamlined package of proven maternal nutrition services is not reaching the majority of women during pregnancy. Alive & Thrive India aims to test the feasibility of integrating a package of maternal nutrition interventions in routine Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (RMNCH) services.These include provision of IFA and calcium supplements, interpersonal counseling on diet during pregnancy and consumption of IFA and calcium, community mobilization, and adequate weight-gain monitoring during pregnancy. This proposed evaluation aims to assess the feasibility of integrating maternal nutrition interventions into an existing RMNCH services in India, using a cluster-randomized evaluation design, complemented with a nested cohort study.

The Effect of Anemia in Infancy on the Microbiome and Systemic Metabolism

Serum and fecal samples were collected from infants at either 6-7 m of age or 12-13 m of age. Serum and feces were analyzed locally for hemoglobin status or evidence of parasites, and standard of care was provided. Excess serum was transported to UC Davis for metabolomics analysis and the University of Hohenheim for iron status assessment and measurement of inflammatory markers. Fecal samples were transported to UC Davis for measurement of the microbiome structure and function.

Colla Corii Asini Treating Anemia in Pregnant Women With Thalassemia(Presenting the Syndrome of Blood Deficiency)

480 pregnant patients diagnosed of silent or standard α-thalassemia, HbH disease, minor or intermediate β-thalassemia with mild anemia will be randomly assigned to treatment group and control group. Patients in the treatment group will be given 15 g of Colla corii asini powder form daily for 8 weeks and followed up to 42 days postpartum while the control group will be observed and followed up in the same period treated with placebo. Levels of hemoglobin(Hb), reticulocyte (RET), immaturity reticulocyte (IRF), indirect bilirubin(IBIL), total bilirubin(TBIL), lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) will be measured on three visits(baseline, week 4 and week 8). The curative effect of TCM Syndrome( week 8) and undesirable pregnancy outcomes(42 days after giving birth) will be observed.

Liberal Transfusion Strategy in Elderly Patients

In this prospective, multicentre, open, randomised, controlled clinical trial elderly patients (≥ 70 years) undergoing intermediate- or high-risk non-cardiac surgery will be randomised either to a liberal group (patients receive a RBC unit each time Hb falls ≤ 9 g/dl (≤ 5.6mmol/l) with a target range for the post-transfusion Hb level of 9-10.5 g/dl (5.6-6.5 mmol/l)) or restrictive group (patients receive a single RBC unit each time Hb falls ≤ 7.5 g/dl (≤ 4.7 mmol/l) with a target range for the post-transfusion Hb level of 7.5-9 g/dl (4.7-5.6 mmol/l). Primary efficacy endpoint: is a composite of death from any cause and anaemia-associated, ischaemic events (defined as acute myocardial infarction, acute ischaemic stroke, acute kidney injury stage III, acute mesenteric ischaemia, acute peripheral vascular ischaemia) within 90 days after surgery.
