Filter by:Background: A stroke occurs when not enough blood reaches the brain. Sometimes stroke causes changes in certain brain matter. This is called white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and can lead to mental decline. But not all WMH is caused by stroke. Not all people with WMH experience mental decline. Researchers want to learn more about WMH. They want to see if it is related to disruptions in the blood-brain barrier. Objective: To better understand the how blood-brain barrier disruption is related to white matter hyperintensities. Eligibility: Adults at least 18 years old who have been admitted to a study site with stroke-like symptoms Design: Participants will be screened with an MRI scan and cognitive tests. Participants will have 11 visits over 6 years. Each visit will be 3-4 hours. At each visit, participants will: Update their medical history Have a thin plastic tube (catheter) inserted into an arm vein by needle Have an MRI. The scanner is a metal cylinder in a strong magnetic field. Participants will lie on a table that slides in and out of the cylinder. Participants will be in the scanner about 60 minutes, lying still for up to 20 minutes at a time. They will get earmuffs for loud sounds. Have a dye injected through the catheter during the MRI Have tests of movement, language, and cognition Some participants will have an extra visit for an MRI in a stronger scanner (7T MRI). Participation for some participants will be authorized by their legal representative.
The main aim of this project is to analyze and understand the meaning of explicit requests to hasten death (euthanasia and assisted suicide) from older people living in an Establishment of accommodation for dependent old persons. This involves conducting interviews with patients, carers to whom the request has been expressed and a relative chosen by the patient. This study aims to describe the request over time. This will be done through two series of interviews, one as soon as it is first expressed, then one week later.
This trial is designed to study the effects of monthly transfusions of young healthy male donor plasma on biological age as assessed by DNA methylation levels, and changes in cognitive, renal, and pulmonary function, muscle strength, telomere length, testosterone, estrogen, DHEAS, IGF-1, high resolution C-Reactive protein, and expression of P16INK4a in peripheral blood T lymphocytes and skin biopsies.
As the french population is ageing, the question of medical care in elderly cancer patients is fundamental. A third of all cancer patients are 70 years or older. This population has specific challenges: autonomy maintenance, treatments efficacy with limited side effects. As a result of a call to projects, the Geriatric Oncology unit of the French Alps (UCOGAlp) has been selected by the National Institute of Cancer (INCa). It includes 15 centres in the Alpine area. This unit has been evaluated patients since 2011, giving them a full geriatric evaluation and trying to establish adapted cares. In order to evaluate the impact of those evaluation on patients' health, the investigators have developped a geriatric follow-up after 1 month (D30) and 4 months (D120). The investigators want to develop a common data base to these centres, in order to evaluate the care practices that were developped, and demonstrate the benefit for the patient on the dependence level and the overall survival.
Age with Health is a longitudinal cohort study aimed to examine trajectories of health, disability and wellbeing and their determinants for Spanish ageing population. Two waves have carried out so far. Wave 1 (2011-2012) and Wave 2 (2014-2015). Wave 3 will be conducted 2018, including also a new cohort of participants (Called 2018 Cohort). The study will provide reliable measures of population ageing and adult health in Spain - and will provide the basis for cross-country comparisons with longitudinal studies conducted in other countries.
The Aging Mastery Program® (AMP) is designed to inform, encourage, and support older adults as they take steps to improve their lives and stay engaged in their communities. The program incorporates evidence-informed materials, expert speakers, group discussion, peer support, and small rewards to give participants the skills and tools they need to achieve measurable improvements in managing their health, remaining economically secure, and contributing actively to society. L.A. CAPRA in partnership with the National Council on Aging, City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Department of Aging will evaluate the effectiveness of the AMP program across 5 community-based senior sites. The overall objective of the proposed study is to evaluate the effectiveness of AMP program on improving the health and well-being of older adults using a randomized wait-list controlled trial.
The purpose of this study is to determine the respective roles of aging and schizophrenia in the regulation of metamemory using a generation strategy. 4 groups will be necessary to comparison: Adult patients (18-45 years) Adult controls (18-45 years) Aged patients (≥ 59.5 years) Aged controls (≥ 59.5 years) The effects of age and the disease could lead to interaction in regulating metamemory. The effect of age would be aggravated by the disease.
FIT-AGING will determine the effect of different exercise modalities on α-Klotho protein (primary outcome) in sedentary healthy adults. FIT-AGING also investigate the physiological consequences of activating Klotho gene (secondary outcomes).
The risk of developing cardiovascular diseases increases with aging largely due to age-related declines in the function of arteries (arterial dysfunction), which are influenced by common lifestyle factors such as consumption of a "Western" diet and lack of sufficient physical activity; thus, it is important to study how these factors interact to affect artery function. This study will determine whether changes to the gut microbiome (the collection of bacteria and other "microbes" living in the intestinal tract) with aging, Western diet consumption and aerobic exercise influence arterial function, and the biological pathways (mechanisms) involved. Specifically, the investigators will perform a randomized, single-blind, controlled feeding crossover study design (comparing Western diet to non-Western diet consumption) in young and older, exercising and non-exercising healthy adults to determine the time course effects (temporal association) of diet on the gut microbiome and arterial function. Overall, this research has potential to establish the gut microbiome as a possible target for treating/preventing age-related arterial dysfunction and reducing the risk of age-associated cardiovascular diseases.
Obese older adults will be randomized to participate in either healthy lifestyle intervention or behavioral diet and exercise intervention for one year. This study aims to determine the effects of Lifestyle intervention on bone microarchitecture, bone strength, bone material properties, and the mechanism behind it.
