The product being used in this study is EVOLENCE®, which is currently marketed in the United States for the cosmetic correction of soft tissue contour deficiencies (including wrinkles), and been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Analysis of Balance in the Aging Process

Introduction: While growing older, it is possible to notice a decrease in the functional and physiological reserves in the organism which impairs the the abilities in the elderly in doing some tasks. A simple balance becomes a challenge. Objective: To evaluate the functional balance in the aging process. Methods: The group was formed by 48 people from 10 to 85 years old. The evaluation instruments are the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), the Unipodal Support Test, the Functional Reach Test and the Romberg's Test.

Ageing is associated with vulnerability against infections leading to increased morbidity with risk of death. Innate and adaptive immunities are altered with ageing responsible of deficits in immune response against pathogens and after vaccination, and favouring the elderly vulnerability against a new pathogen with increased bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. If immunity has been widely studied in immunosenescence, there are few prospective, comparative studies with elderly ill patients. Moreover among these studies, pathologies are not well defined. The main objective of our project is to compare the immune state of elderly hospitalised subjects in an acute geriatric unit to the immune state of elderly healthy subjects selected with strict criteria, in order to precise the impact of polypathology and of various pathologies on immunity state.

Effect of Resvida, a Comparison With Calorie Restriction Regimen

The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of the antioxidant "resveratrol" to a diet intervention (Calorie Restriction) to determine how each of them affects the following: gene expression profile, cholesterol (lipids), how well the hormone insulin works to control your blood sugar, and other blood and tissue markers of metabolic and cardiovascular health. Resveratrol is found in grape skin, wine, peanuts, and mulberries and is thought to have health benefits such as improving fat metabolism, insulin action, and possibly extending lifespan. Resvida™ is the name for the dietary supplement containing the natural antioxidant "resveratrol". Resvida™ will be supplied by DSM Nutritional Products, Ltd. Resvida™ is considered a dietary supplement, and therefore it is not an approved drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is regulated like a food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not strictly regulate herbs and dietary supplements. The makers of Resvida™ make no claim that this supplement is meant to treat any ailment. Calorie restriction (CR) is a low calorie diet (about 30% fewer calories than the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends). Calorie restriction has also been linked to health benefits (enhanced cardiovascular and metabolic health) and an extended lifespan. This study is designed to compare the health benefits of both resveratrol and CR and to determine if resveratrol mimics some of the health benefits shown with CR.

Transcriptomic Study of ER 4017 Topical Application in Elderly Subject

The stratum corneum (SC) is the superficial layer of the epidermis situated at the interface between the body and its outside environment. Its strategic position confers it a crucial role of protection against aggressions. After disruption, the kinetic of cutaneous barrier is slower in elderly comparatively to young subjects. The purpose of this study is to investigate, by characterizing molecular events, the effectiveness of ER4017 (Hydroxypropyltetrahydropyrantriol) to restore kinetic barrier function after acute disruption of stratum corneum in ederly subjects. 10 male volunteers aged from 60 to 75 years are randomized to receive topical application of ER4017 versus placebo on skin inner forearms twice a day during 3 months. After sequential selloptape strips, epidermal samples of treated and control skin are removed under local anesthesia, using a dermatome. Differential gene expression analysis is performed using micro array techniques and quantitative RT-PCR. treatment, randomized on the location, double blind, placebo control, internal control subject, prospective study.
