Filter by:This is a pilot study to develop a collaborative, translational research project investigating whether physical activity may in part exert a positive influence on aging via the mobilization of stem cells. Preliminary data will be collected to explore the relationship between physical activity and stem cell populations found in the blood. The study hypothesis is that stem cell decrease with age, but that persons who are more physically active will have a higher number of stem cells in the blood. The first assessment will include an evaluation of health, physical activity and lifestyle via questionnaires. Height, weight and abdominal girth will be measured, and blood will be drawn for immune and stem cell assessment. Participants will be given a pedometer and accelerometer to wear daily for 7 days. Participants will return for a second visit at which the pedometer and accelerometer will be returned and blood will be drawn. Stem cell and immune assays will be repeated to evaluate the variability of these measures over time. The correlation between stem cell numbers and physical activity will be analyzed.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether preventive home visits for people aged 80 and over are effective in the prevention of nursing home admission in Germany.
We have developed a training intervention that successfully improves older adults' memory. We have also shown that older adults whose memory is as good as younger adults' memory (Hi-Old) use an altered pattern of memory-related brain activity compared to younger adults, whereas healthy older adults with poorer memory (Lo-Old) do not. We have also shown that individuals with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) have impairments of conscious, effortful, Recollection-based memory processes, whereas their automatic, Familiarity-based memory processes are intact. Our primary current goal is to investigate whether our successful memory intervention will improve Recollection and produce induce altered patterns of brain activity in the Lo-Old and aMCI. Young, Lo-Old, Hi-Old, and aMCI will be scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing two memory tasks. Half of the Lo-Old and half of the aMCI will then receive the memory intervention, while the other half in each group will receive a control program consisting of information and games about aging. The Lo-Old and aMCI will then be rescanned while performing the two memory tasks. We predict that the memory intervention will improve performance on a number of memory tasks, and will induce altered patterns of brain activity. In the Lo-Old, their brain activity after the memory intervention will look more like the Hi-Old, while brain activity will become more focal in the aMCI.
Few previous studies have explored the effects of mind body approaches on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in frail elderly. Cognition and action are an inseparable whole while functioning. A new intervention-based approach using familiarity based movements and a non-judgmental approach was labeled "cognition-action." The investigators aimed to explore the effects of two different mind-body exercise types on (HRQoL) in frail institutionalized elderly. The investigators' main hypothesis is that adaptated physical activity in frail institutionalized elderly can improve HRQoL.
The purpose of this study is to find out why women's arteries stiffen as they go through menopause, and how this is affected by estrogen loss. We believe that arteries stiffen with the loss of estrogen because of "oxidative stress," the production of molecules that can damage cells and tissues in the body, and because the arteries lose their ability to expand, or dilate.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of blood pressure medications on cognition and blood flow in hypertensive elderly patients with cognitive impairment. The hypothesis is that treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) or an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) will be associated with a slower rate of further cognitive decline, improved cerebral blood flow and its regulation, and preserved physical function as compared to treatment with a diuretic (HCTZ), independent of blood pressure level.
The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that sleep homeostasis, also known as sleep pressure or sleep drive, is different in healthy older and younger individuals.
Advanced glycation products or AGEs are a heterogeneous group of molecules formed by exposure of tissue constituents to high levels of reducing sugars, e.g. glucose. The interaction of these compounds with extra- and intra-cellular components may account in part for several conditions related to aging. It has recently been recognized that AGEs are also formed during the preparation of food by heating, are absorbed into the circulation and become largely incorporated into tissue components. Accumulation of these exogenous substances over time may, together with those generated endogenously, contribute to the clinical manifestations and complications of aging. This is an interventional-randomized study in which we are trying to determine whether a diet low in AGE can effectively reduce circulating AGE levels, with or without altering oxidation or inflammatory markers, in a subset of both young and older subjects , over a period of 4 months. If positive results are obtained, longer-term prospective studies will be designed to determine if this intervention can affect disease outcomes in older age subjects. The study design is very simple and consists initially of obtaining a dietary history, a blood sample, 24-hour urine collection and, subsequently, of determining the effects of a low-AGE diet for 4 months on the plasma levels of these compounds in a group of healthy subjects.
With this study, the investigators will like to determine if taking a dose of the study medication, called Polypodium leucotomos (PL), prevents some of the changes in the skin caused by the adverse effects of UVA, a type of ultraviolet light.
