Filter by:The purpose of this study is to evaluate safety and efficacy of twice-daily ARD-101 in subjects at least one year after bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass).
Over 70% of U.S. adults have overweight or obesity. Currently, the most efficacious behavioral intervention for obesity is standard behavioral treatment (SBT), often composed of group sessions, calorie goals, and physical activity goals. With this approach, participants often lose 8-10% of the person's baseline weight, and also decrease risk for cardiovascular disease. Long-term weight loss, however, is limited; many participants return to baseline weight within five years following treatment. One reason SBT may not create long-term weight loss may be due to treatment components that teach participants to rely on external methods for changing eating decisions (e.g., counting calories, restricting certain foods), rather than internal cues of hunger and satiety. Because individuals with obesity report significant challenges with adhering to these cues, augmenting behavioral interventions with appetite self-regulation training may be a solution. Thus, the investigator propose to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-month remotely-delivered appetite regulation + lifestyle modification intervention to treat obesity.
The purpose of this study is to enable the investigator to conduct proof of concept work related to the feasibility, acceptability, initial efficacy and mechanisms of action (focusing on maternal and infant modifiable factors) for a novel self-management intervention for pregnant women.
The purpose of this online follow-up study is to investigate health app use in pregnant women and through a pilot intervention trial investigate whether the addition of evidence-based information on health-promoting lifestyle delivered via the health app has an effect on lifestyle habits (gestational weight, diet quality and physical activity) during pregnancy.
Background: Burden: Globally, an estimated 14.3 million under-5 children are severely malnourished. Two-thirds of them live in Asian countries, including Bangladesh. Acute malnutrition is an underlying cause of nearly half of global deaths in under-5 children despite standardized rehabilitation protocols. It is also associated with high relapse rates following discharge. Knowledge Gap: Malnourished children suffer from deficiencies of several essential nutrients. Studies showed that malnourished children had lower serum carnitine levels and demonstrated its role in the rate of weight gain in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The consequences of nutritional impairment can be perilous if carnitine deficiency is coupled with Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED). Recent evidence confirms that EED is characterized by secondary carnitine deficiency in children. Carnitine deficiency leading to EED may cause childhood growth faltering and impaired cognitive development. However, evidence on carnitine status and its consequences in relation to EED in diarrheal children with SAM is very limited in Bangladesh. Relevance: Such lack of information regarding the role of L-carnitine in improving the rate of weight gain in malnourished children susceptible to EED is an obstacle in limiting the relapse and adverse consequences of SAM in diarrheal children living in resource-limited countries. Hypothesis: L- carnitine supplementation for 15 days in children with SAM will improve the rate of weight gain and biomarkers of EED Objective: 1. To investigate the role of L-carnitine supplementation on the rate of weight gain among the children with SAM 2. To investigate the role of L-carnitine supplementation on the duration of the hospital stays 3. To examine the role of L-carnitine supplementation on EED biomarkers, for instance, myeloperoxidase (MPO), neopterin (NEO), alpha-1 anti-trypsin (A1AT), kynurenine: tryptophan (KT) ratio, and citrulline in children with SAM Methods: This study will be a double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial
The ClockWork Postpartum Weight Management Pilot Study is an intervention study that will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of the ClockWork intervention among women with prepregnancy overweight/obesity during the first 4 months postpartum.

The purpose of this research study is to test whether delivery of medically tailored meals (meals designed specifically to be healthy) can be used to help reduce high blood sugar after delivery of a baby. Participants will be recruited and consented during the third trimester of pregnancy but will begin study activities after delivery. Participants will complete a series of questionnaires on demographics, health history, home environment, overall and financial stress, plans for weight loss and infant feeding, and food insecurity. Participants will also be asked to wear continuous glucose monitors for two separate 14-day periods (within 2 weeks of delivery and at 3 months). All participants will receive weekly emails with educational videos and 3 virtual visits with a member of the study team and will also be randomly assigned to an intervention or comparison group. In the intervention, participants will receive weekly meal deliveries of 10 pre-prepared meals from Providence Community Kitchen (local company in Winston-Salem, NC) that are calorically restricted and appropriate for post-partum women with a history of gestational diabetes and who may be breast-feeding. Women in the control condition will receive written resources on self-care, nutrition, and physical activity appropriate for post-partum women who had gestational diabetes.
Retrospective analysis of 100 morbidly obese patients who underwent a transit bipartition (TB) procedure ("Single Anastomosis Sleeve Ileal bypass") for inadequate weight loss or weight recidivism after a previous sleeve gastrectomy. Data were collected prospectively in strictly pseudonymous form. The primary endpoint of the study is weight loss at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after TB. A subgroup analysis evaluates the effect of the length of the common channel. Secondary endpoints include impact on obesity related comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux) as well as safety.
