Filter by:Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, sleep quality and pain are the common symptoms experienced by children with cancer. These symptoms significantly devastate the children's quality of life. Hypnosis is found to be effective in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, sleep quality and pain in children with cancer. In addition, virtual reality is shown to promote the effectiveness of hypnosis in managing these symptoms. However, no study so far has examine it effectiveness in Hong Kong Chinese children with cancer. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness in the use a virtual reality device to improve chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, sleep quality and pain among children with cancer in Hong Kong.
Cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Chemotherapy is the most common treatment for cancer. Notwithstanding the improved survival, children with cancer still have to face a significant amount of symptoms associated with chemotherapy. Two major symptoms induced by chemotherapy are nausea and vomiting. These two symptoms were demonstrated to cause serious disruption in patients' daily function and quality of life. Given these devastating impacts, intervening children with appropriate methods to alleviate nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy is therefore crucial. It is imperative for nurses to develop non-pharmacological interventions to reduce nausea and vomiting, with the goal of improving the QoL of children with cancer when undergoing chemotherapy First, however, careful assessment of nausea and vomiting in children with cancer is a necessary step towards designing appropriate interventions. This study aims to translate and validate an instrument (PeNAT) which can assess nausea and vomiting among Hong Kong Chinese children and adolescents undergoing chemotherapy
Recommendation is strong on physical activity (PA) in the prehabilitation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) for various types of surgeries. The evidence is however weak regarding ERAS protocols. Many studies have showed that physical exercise and PA have hypoalgesic effects on healthy individuals and they have better pain tolerance too. Here the investigators study changes in postoperative pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting for various types of surgical patients after performing preoperative PA at moderate or vigorous intensity Vs non-preoperative PA patients.
Carbon dioxide which is insufflated to inflate the abdominal area is absorbed from the peritoneal area and it increases endogenous catecholamines, which may consequently increase nausea and vomiting. In the literature, it is indicated that oxygen application which is one of the applications aiming to prevent nausea and vomiting is a cheap method with fewer side effects in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. In the literature, studies on the prevention of nausea and vomiting by oxygen application in different surgical interventions have not arrived at a consensus regarding surgery type and oxygen amounts. There are studies evaluating 80% and 30% oxygen amounts in removing postoperative nausea and vomiting. Taking these conditions into consideration; the study has been planned for the purpose of examining the impact of giving 80% and 60% oxygen to patients to whom laparoscopic cholecystectomy is applied on postoperative nausea and vomiting in the postoperative period. The study has been planned as a randomized controlled study for the purpose of determining the impact of giving oxygen (80% to the group A, 60% to the group B and control group C) to patients who apply to the general surgery service to undergo a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on postoperative nausea and vomiting in the postoperative period. The patients in the study will have the same standard anesthesia protocol and hospital routine. The study will be terminated once a total of 111 patients have been reached. In the study randomization, the patients will be assigned to the sample group according to weeks as they may influence each other. Data will be collected using Patient Introductory Information Form, which evaluates patients' socio-demographic characteristics, as well as Perioperative Period Patient Follow-Up Form and Postoperative Period Nausea-Vomiting Frequency and Severity Evaluation Form. Statistical analysis of the data to be acquired as a result of the study will be performed in the computer environment. The results to be obtained will be evaluated at p<0,05 significance level. It is expected that the study results will provide an alternative method, which will be used in preventing the possible side effects of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients who undergo a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Thus, the study results may make scientific and socio-economic contributions.
This study is designed to compare the effects of a single dose Ondansetron 4mg versus Palonosetron 75mcg in the prophylaxis against early & delayed postoperative nausea and vomiting in the first 48 hours post-operatively in patients undergoing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) to determine the complete response, complete control and failure rates.
This is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, double-blind, phase III study.
This study is aimed to only observe the feeding practices after surgery in children undergoing below umbilicus surgery in day care and any impact of length of fasting on vomiting after surgery. If the child meets the criteria for being included in this study, the parents will be provided with informed consent form at the time of arrival at the daycare unit or at the time of arrival in the waiting area of the operating room. If parents agree and sign the consent form, then the child will be included in the study. The length of fasting period after the surgery and any episode of vomiting from after surgery till discharge time to home, will be recorded on a printed form. The nature of this study is only observation and the child will not be subjected to any new technique or medications. Parents will also be contacted on the next day of surgery on the phone number for any further observation about the child's feeding and vomiting and parental satisfaction with the anesthesia given will also be asked.
Patients with BMI >35 and chronic diseases or BMI >40 will be scheduled to receive Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG). Two groups are planned according to receive Enhance recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol or not. All participants will receive standard LSG. Participants of ERAS will receive anesthesia and post-surgical nutrition protocol which are determined for ERAS. All patients will be checked for status of pain with VAS score, nausea and vomiting with PONV score at postoperative 2nd hour, 12th hour. In ERAS group liquid oral intake will be started between postoperative 2nd and 4th hours. In no ERAS group liquid oral intake will be started in the morning of postoperative first day. The patients who provides discharge criterias will be discahrged. these criterias are; To provide adequate pain relief with paracetamol and nonsteroidal painkillers, No wound problem, No complications after surgery, Pulse rate <90 beats / min, temperature ≤ 37 · 5 ° C, respiratory rate, <20 breaths / minute, To be able to mobilize easily, To be able to drink 1 liter of water after surgery. Emergency admissions of the participants within a month after surgery will be recorded.
This clinical trial is intended to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the administration of ondansetron in children with mild-moderate dehydration. The target population will be children between 4 and 13 years old who present vomiting.
Spinal surgery is typically associated with severe postoperative pain. Although the number of spinal surgeries has increased day by day, postoperative pain management have been limited. The recently described thoracolumbar interfacial plane block (TLIPB) has been reported to provide effective postoperative analgesia in spinal surgery. In addition, the recently described erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is obtained by applying the local anesthetic drug between the fascia of the spina muscles and the transverse process of the vertebrae. Anatomical and radiological investigations in fresh cadavers suggest that the potential place of influence of ESPB is dorsal and ventral spinal nerve roots. A small number of publications showing the analgesic efficacy of ESP in spinal surgery have been reported in the literature. In this study, the investigators aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy of TLIPB and ESPB in spinal surgeries.
