Filter by:A qualitative study, combining psychiatric and anthropological perspectives, focused on the lived experiences of patients who had recourse to HPNCL emergencies during the period of November 2021, as well as the experiences and perceptions of those around them - such as their family, teachers or school and nursing staff. This multi-site approach will provide a multidimensional perspective on the experience of individuals and those around them, as well as a triangulation of data. The hypotheses to explain the increase in the rate of suicidal crisis will be addressed through semi-structured interviews proposed to the participants of the study.
The study is a randomized trial comparing outcomes of active duty service members who present to the emergency department at risk for suicide and receive care from providers trained in crisis response planning versus those providing treatment as usual.
The goal of this study is to test the effects of just-in-time intervention strategies aimed to promote implementation of the safety plan and its components at different levels of suicidal urges and intent. The main questions the investigators aim to answer are: 1. What is the acceptability and feasibility of the just-in-time intervention strategies? 2. What are the proximal effects of just-in-time intervention strategies aimed to promote use of the safety plan and its components? 3. What internal and external contextual factors moderate the just-in-time intervention effects? Participants (adults hospitalized for suicidal thoughts or behaviors) will: - Answer questions about current suicidal thoughts on their smartphone up to 4 times each day during both hospitalization and the 4 weeks after they leave the hospital - Each time they submit a survey, be immediately randomized to receive (or not receive) a just-in-time intervention tailored to their level of current suicidal thoughts - Answer brief follow-up questions on their smartphone within a couple hours of each randomization - Provide feedback on their experience with the just-in-time interventions
The goal of this study is to learn about a new, real-time, smartphone-based intervention aimed to decrease risk for suicide in adults who have been hospitalized for suicidal thoughts or behaviors. The main questions the investigators aim to answer are: - Is a real-time, smartphone-based intervention that promotes the use of safety plans and other coping strategies for suicidal thoughts feasible and acceptable? - Does the real-time intervention result in increased use of safety plans and other coping strategies, and reduce suicidal thoughts? Participants will: - Answer questions about current suicidal thoughts on their smartphone up to 6 times each day while they are in the hospital and during the 4 weeks after they leave the hospital - When they report elevated suicidal thoughts on a smartphone survey, be randomly assigned to receive or not receive automated, interactive reminders to use content from their personalized safety plan or general coping strategies - Answer brief follow-up questions on their smartphone within a couple hours of receiving or not receiving automated reminders - Give feedback on their experience with the real-time intervention
The mains objectives of our project are to coordinate the monitoring of suicides and to identify common or specific suicide risk factors in four overseas DROM-COM (French Polynesia, La Reunion, French Guiana and Martinique) by comparing to a site in mainland France (Amiens). A mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative) will be used, based on semi-directed interviews of the psychological autopsy type.
This protocol will test the effectiveness of an intervention, iCHART (integrated Care to Help At-Risk Teens) and facilitate recruitment for other studies in the larger ETUDES Center grant, which are focused on treatment development for target risk factors for suicidal behavior, specifically, sleep, anhedonia, and stress related to cybervictimization. This study will recruit 900 adolescents which will be enrolled in a randomized controlled trial to test iCHART and will be randomized to iCHART or treatment as usual (TAU). Based on previous work, the investigators hypothesize that iCHART, compared to TAU, will decrease suicidal-related events by 50%, and the effects will be mediated by increases in referrals, treatment engagement, and safety planning. The investigators will use implementation science methods to assess contextual factors (i.e., barriers and facilitators) and implementation outcomes specifically, acceptability, feasibility, appropriateness, and cost for our predictive algorithm and iCHART to inform future implementation efforts and promote health equity.
The purpose of this study is to test whether an individual coaching program called Social Engage Coaching (or 'Engage Coaching' for short) helps adults age 60 and older feel more connected to other people in ways that matter to them. Procedures include participating in a Social Engage Coaching program, research assessments with surveys, and assessments completed on a cell phone. Engage Coaching involves individual sessions with a trained Engage Coach (up to 10 sessions) that are designed to help participants improve social relationships and well-being. All subjects will receive the scheduled baseline and follow-up interviews by the research team. These interviews will be conducted at study start, mid-way through the program at 8 weeks and after completing the program at 16 weeks. Interviews will be via Zoom/phone as well as surveys done online.
Suicide rates among Veterans with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) are intractably high, representing a serious public health concern and a critical target for interventions. Yet, at present available treatments offer modest benefits. Thus, there remains an urgent need to identify novel approaches to address suicide risk in this population. Previous reports have linked suicide risk with poor social functioning. Emerging evidence from basic affective neuroscience research has indicated that effective social functioning is contingent on intact emotion awareness. Consistent with these findings, individuals with SMI at risk of suicide display social functioning difficulties along with poor emotion awareness (i.e., alexithymia). Employing a proof-of-concept design, the aim of the present study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, blended psychoeducation and digital mHealth (mobile health) intervention with smartphones designed to target alexithymia and poor social functioning to reduce suicide risk in Veterans with SMI.
This study aims to develop and test a brief, digital, suicide prevention intervention for sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth who have experienced cyberbullying. Leading up to this phase, the study team completed two prior study aims, focused on identifying perspectives of SGM youth's regarding their experiences with cyberbullying and priorities for an intervention, and a phase in which SGM youth codesigned the study's intervention with the study team. This resulted in the development of study's intervention, Flourish, which leverages a text messaging-based chatbot to reduce suicide risk following cyberbullying among SGM youth through improving distress tolerance, motivation for help-seeking, and social problem-solving. Current Study Aim: Conduct an open trial to assess the feasibility and acceptability of Flourish among cyberbullied SGM youth, ages 12-17 (N=10). Hypotheses: Feasibility will be evidenced by recruitment/retention rates > 80% and use of Flourish among > 70% of SGM youth. At follow-up, adolescents will report improved problem-solving capacity, distress tolerance, and motivation for help-seeking and reduced psychological distress and suicidal ideation compared to baseline.
Suicide is a major public health problem. About 9,000 suicides per year are retrieved by year in France. Between 15,000 and 20,0000 suicide attempts give rise to contact with the healthcare system. Among young people aged 15 to 24 years old, suicide is the second main cause of death. In this way, suicide among adolescents is a major public health priority, due to its seriousness, its frequency, and its potentially preventable nature. The severity of suicide risk can be assessed by different scales, and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) is the most widely used in the international literature for adolescents, assessing four dimensions: suicidal ideation, severity of ideation, suicidal behavior and lethality. The measurement of the seriousness of the suicide risk is therefore defined as the measurement of the importance of the direct and indirect negative consequences associated with this risk. It can be catch up in the four factors mentioned above. Anxiety is one of the central pillars influencing the suicidal risk of adolescents. Very few studies have identified operationalizable and generalizable risk factors for anxiety. However, in adolescents, one of the risk factors for anxiety seems particularly important, because it is a factor that is both generic (i.e., it can be found in different profiles of adolescents), related to the projection in the future (which characterizes this population), and relatively specific to this age group, while being operational through validated questionnaires. This important risk factor is the eco-anxiety, which corresponds to anxiety related to climate change. The theme of climate change is certainly a central social issue, but also an important public health issue. First, climate change raises direct risks to human health, and indirectly some risks for mental health. For instance, the direct consequences of a drought or natural disaster can cause material hardship that impacts indirectly mental health (Thoma et al., 2021). Secondly, climate change can also raise direct risk for mental health, and especially the eco-anxiety which is not the consequence of a direct risk from the environment on an individual, but rather constitutes mental distress related to the fear of such changes. Eco-anxiety can be identified and measured in a valid and reliable way thanks to a scale used in the international literature, the "Climate Anxiety Scale" (CAS), which was validated in 2020 with 22 items with 4 factors by Clayton and Karazsia (Clayton and Karazsia, 2020), and translated and validated in French in 2022 by Mouguiama-Daouda (Mouguiama-Daouda et al., 2022), retaining as the most appropriate model the version with the first 13 items. This scale is suitable for adolescents from the age of 12 years old. This 13-item scale is composed of two subscales that assess cognitive and emotional difficulties in response to climate change and functional impairment. Two subscales are added to this 13-item scale (and thus are part of the 22-item CAS also validated), which assess 1) direct or indirect personal experience of climate change, and 2) behavioral commitment and the tendency to deploy adaptive behavioral responses to climate change. The literature reports a correlation between eco-anxiety and depression (Mouguiama-Daouda et al., 2022). Indeed, depressive symptoms can influence how people worry about climate change. The correlation between eco-anxiety and anxiety is variable in the literature and has been studied using questionnaires focusing on generalized anxiety (Mouguiama-Daouda et al., 2022). Higher suicide rates have certainly been shown in populations affected by climate change (Dumont et al., 2020), related to the direct consequences of climate change, e.g., due to pollution, increased temperature or drought. However, to the knowledge of the investigators and despite the major public health impact in adolescents, no study has investigated the relationships between eco-anxiety and the severity of suicide risk. This study therefore seeks to examine the association between eco-anxiety in adolescents, assessed using the French version of the CAS, and the severity of suicide risk, assessed using the French version of the C-SSRS. We hypothesize that there would be a relationship between eco-anxiety and the severity of suicide risk in adolescents. Such results would allow both to refine the understanding of the risk of suicide, in its relationship with a central theme of society and public health, and to better identify and prevent behaviors at risk of suicide among adolescents.
