NCT ID: NCT00484692 Completed - Nicotine Dependence Clinical Trials

Randomized Trial of Ultrashort Psychotherapy vs Sustained-Release Bupropion for Smoking Cessation

Start date: July 2005
Phase: Phase 4
Study type: Interventional

Background Smokers often reject drugs as smoking cessation aids. Nonpharmacological interventions are notoriously under-evaluated. Methods We conducted a randomized clinical trial in which we compared a medication, i.e., sustained-release bupropion (Zyban®; 413 subjects), at the time of the trial the most efficacious pharmacological smoking cessation aid, with an ultrashort psychotherapeutic intervention, Psychodynamic Model Training® (366 subjects), a manual-based psychodynamically oriented 1 ½ day autosuggestion training. Outcome criterion was 12-month self-reported continuous abstinence confirmed by urine cotinine levels below the level of detection (13 ng/ml) or, in an independent analysis, by exhaled carbon monoxide of 10 ppm or less at all interviews conducted at 3, 6, and 12 months.

NCT ID: NCT00451854 Completed - Substance Abuse Clinical Trials

Student Athlete Testing Using Random Notification

SATURN
Start date: September 1999
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of drug testing on risk and protective factors of substance abuse among adolescents; examine whether drug and alcohol testing among high school athletes leads to reduced drug and alcohol use; and assess the use of drugs and alcohol among student athletes and non-athletes.

NCT ID: NCT00447720 Completed - HIV Infections Clinical Trials

HIV Prevention Among Substance Abusing SMI

Start date: June 2004
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of translating two proven interventions, RESPECT, and the NIDA Community Based Outreach Model, into one program of education, PATH, to be delivered by case managers to their seriously mentally ill, substance abusing clients. The objective is to teach case managers to assess the specific risk profiles of their clients, and then create a plan of intervention aimed at reducing high risk sexual and substance abusing behaviors.

NCT ID: NCT00432926 Completed - HIV Infections Clinical Trials

Behavior Change and Maintenance Intervention for HIV+ MSM Methamphetamine Users

Start date: February 2007
Phase: Phase 2
Study type: Interventional

This study tests the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention to reduce sexual risk behavior in HIV-positive, methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men (MSM). It builds on the findings of a previous study (R01 DA012116, "Promoting safer sex in HIV+ homosexual and bisexual men who use methamphetamine"). That study achieved significant short-term results that eroded over time. Accordingly, this study hypothesizes that the addition of a maintenance component to the already proven counseling and educational components of the treatment model will result in longer-lasting positive effects.

NCT ID: NCT00399763 Completed - Clinical trials for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Atomoxetine for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescents With Substance Use Disorder

Start date: September 2005
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to find out whether atomoxetine (also called Strattera) helps teenagers (12-19) with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and drug/alcohol problems.

NCT ID: NCT00375102 Completed - Substance Abuse Clinical Trials

Acupuncture and the Relaxation Response for Substance Abuse

Start date: November 2006
Phase: Phase 2/Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

This one-year pilot study has two specific aims: 1. to determine the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial of acupuncture and the relaxation response for substance abuse among homeless veterans who are in a domiciliary care program, and 2. to collect and analyze pilot data to estimate the effect size for planning a future larger study to fully test the hypothesis of the effectiveness of acupuncture and the RR in reducing cravings for substances (alcohol and drugs), and the corollary effects on quality of life.

NCT ID: NCT00373750 Completed - Depression Clinical Trials

Cradling Our Future Through Family Strengthening Study

Start date: June 2006
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to determine whether an in-home, paraprofessional-delivered family strengthening curriculum entitled Family Spirit is effective at increasing parental competence, improving maternal outcomes and improving childhood outcomes in a sample of at-risk teen mothers living in four Native American reservation communities. The effectiveness of the Family Spirit curriculum will be determined by comparing outcomes of mothers who receive the intervention plus assisted transportation to prenatal and well baby visits (called Optimal Standardized Care) to mothers who receive only Optimal Standardized Care. Outcomes will be assessed at multiple intervals over the course of a 39-month study period.

NCT ID: NCT00367172 Completed - HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials

Directly Observed Antiretroviral Therapy Among Active Drug Users

Start date: June 2001
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The goal of this randomized, controlled trial is to compare the effectiveness of a community-based program of providing supervised antiretroviral therapy to HIV-positive drug users, compared to having the patients take the medicines on their own.

NCT ID: NCT00356551 Completed - Substance Abuse Clinical Trials

Family Spirit Study

Start date: May 2002
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The goals of this study are to evaluate the effects of an in-home parenting education program, called Family Spirit, on parenting knowledge and skills and decreasing alcohol and substance use compared to a breast-feeding education. In addition, we will assess aspects of mother/child interaction.
