Filter by:Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 transmits through droplets; thus, oral, nasal, and conjunctival mucosas are related to contamination, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is strongly suggested. Several communication problems between the patient and healthcare workers related to PPE use are reported. In this study, investigators aimed to investigate changes in the acoustic parameters of speech sounds when different PPE are used.
Speech and voice disorders are observed in almost 90% of patients with PD during their course of illness. Reduced voice pitch inflections or monotone speech, reduced vocal loudness, prosody disorders, the imprecise articulation of the consonants, hoarseness, and breathy voice is also observed in patients with PD; these symptoms often lead to reduced speech intelligibility. The aim of this study will to investigate the possible changes in the voice and speech features in people with PD after a combined speech and music therapy using Telerehabilitation.
Purpose of the study is the validation and cultual adaptation of the Turkish translation of the London Speech Evaluation Scale (LSE-T), so that it would be used as an assessment tool for Turkish head and neck cancer patients. There is no validated Turkish version of LSE to measure severity of perceptual speech in head and neck cancer patients.
The investigators have designed an innovative proof-of-concept trial designed to provide data as to whether the speech difficulties in children with developmental dysphasia (DD) are improved with intranasal inhalations of bioactive factors (BF), produced by macrophages of M2 phenotype (M2-BFs). The rationale for this approach is the ability of central nervous system (CNS) to repair and the important role of macrophages in the regulation of this process. It was found that type 2 macrophages (M2) have anti-inflammatory and neurorestorative potential, in contrast to pro-inflammatory and neurotoxic effects of М1 cells. The influence of M2 is largely realized through the production of a wide spectrum of bioactive factors (cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, neuropeptides, microvesicles etc) that inhibit inflammation, protect neurons from apoptosis, stimulate neurogenesis, the growth and remyelination of axons, the formation of new synapses and activate angiogenesis. This study uses M2-BFs, as therapeutic tool, and intranasal administration focusing on nose to brain transport, as a mode of delivery. Expected clinical effects in treated children: improvement of speech understanding, word formation, grammatical structure of speech and formation of coherent speech.
The study proposes to identify deviant speech dimensions in patients with HD at presymptomatic and declared stages of the disease, compared to healthy subjects, using the computerized MonPaGe speech protocol. This tool is based on a multidimensional and quantified assessment of voice and speech, by a set of targeted acoustic and perceptual criteria.
The goal of this project is to test a new AAC-BCI device comparing gel and dry electrode headgear used for communication while providing clinical care. Innovative resources will be employed to support the standard of care without considering limitations based on service billing codes. Clinical services will include AAC assessment, AAC-BCI device and treatment to individuals with minimal movement due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brain stem strokes, severe cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their family support person. This is a descriptive study designed to measure and monitor the communication performance of individuals using the AAC-BCI, any other AAC strategies, their user satisfaction and perceptions of communication effectiveness, and the satisfaction of the family support persons.
When soft palate defects lead to palatal insufficiency, the patient's quality of life is affected by difficulties swallowing, hypernasality, and poor intelligibility of speech. If immediate surgical reconstruction is not an option, the patient may benefit from the placement of a rigid obturator prosthesis. Unfortunately, the residual muscle stumps are often unable to adequately move this stiff and inert obturator to properly restore the velopharyngeal valve function. The objective of this case report was to describe the use of a membrane obturator prosthesis that incorporates a dental dam to compensate for the soft palate defect.
Late-acquired sounds, such as /r/ are difficult to learn and many children experience persistent errors on these sounds. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether treating these sounds earlier in the child's life may result in better outcomes.
The focus of this investigation is to compare the effectiveness of the AAC Generative Language Intervention approach to an AAC Standard of Care condition on preschool sentence productions. All children will use existing AAC iPad applications.
To better define the clinical characteristics of oromandibular dystonia, we aimed to study voice, speech and swallowing disorders in idiopathic oromandibular We planned to include consecutive patients followed in Lille Movement disorders department for idiopathic oromandibular dystonia and matched, healthy control subjects. Voice and speech disorders had to be assessed with the phonetic analysis, perceptive analysis and motor examination modules of the "Batterie d'Evaluation Clinique de la Dysarthrie" (Clinical Evaluation of Dysarthria), the Grade, Rough, Breathy, Asthenic, Strained scale, and a computer recording. Activities of daily living had to be assessed with the Oromandibular Dystonia Questionnaire, the Voice Handicap Index and the Deglutition Handicap Index.
