Filter by:A better understanding of how to incorporate effective smoking cessation measures into clinical practice is requested. In this is prospective, multi-center, randomized, open, blinded end-point (PROBE) trial, we assigned daily smokers hospitalized with an acute cardiac event 1:1 to an in-hospital nurse-led smoking cessation intervention with direct referral to further follow-up in the municipal healthy life-centres (intensive intervention) or to written information about smoking cessation and the municipal program (low-threshold intervention) . The primary outcome will be the smoking cessation rates between the groups at 6 months follow-up. Key secondary outcomes include a cost-effectiveness analysis of the intensive intervention and cessation rates at 3- and 12-months follow-up, the proportion who used nicotine replacement therapy and the proportion who attended the healthy-life center program between the two groups. We also assess effects of recurrent cardiovascular events and mortality after 12 months, two and five years follow-up. Exploratory analyses include new knowledge about the patient and system factors of importance for participation to healthy life-centers and for changes in smoking behaviour.
Background: Nicotine contained in tobacco is highly addictive and tobacco use is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Every year, more than 8 million people die from tobacco use. Smoking-related mortality is significantly higher in people with serious mental illness. Is estimated that half of all deaths among individuals with mental illnesses are attributable to tobacco use. People with serious mental illness have greater daily tobacco consumption, nicotine dependence, and smoking relapse. While significant progress has been made in reducing tobacco use within the general population, rates of tobacco use remain high among individuals with mental illness. Smoking cessation often requires numerous attempts by these people. Thus, smokers with mental health illnesses may find it more difficult to quit, although highly motivated to quit. Smoking cessation during hospitalization (total or partial) is cost-effective, as it reduces hospital readmissions, and mortality, and improves smokers' quality of life. Available quitting aids are both safe and effective in supporting cessation in tobacco users with mental illness and stopping smoking is associated with an improvement in mental health. The investigators aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of adding an intensive smoking intervention to the usual treatment for patients with psychiatric disorders attending a day hospital of a tertiary hospital.
The objective of this study is to test the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a tailored text message program to support smoking abstinence among postpartum women who smoke or recently quit.
We will conduct a small-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 24 adult smokers enrolled in the TTP. Participants will receive either the Free4Good mobile app for positive psychology skills training or a breathing relaxation mobile app control (Breathe2Relax). All participants will be receiving tobacco cessation treatment in the Tobacco Treatment Program at MD Anderson as standard of care.

The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility, acceptability and effect of a combined smoking cessation intervention integrating contingency management (reward-based) strategies with Mindfulness training to identify the optimal dynamic strategy to promote smoking cessation among HIV patients.
The purpose of this study is to pretest the design of a text-based smoking cessation program tailored to sexual minority individuals.
The purpose of this two arm randomized clinical trial (RCT) is to test if a smoking cessation program called Quit for Life (QFL) which was developed by the investigators is effective for patients in China with HIV who smoke. This program is designed to suit the needs of people with HIV who smoke in China. Eligible participants who provide consent will be randomized into either the QFL or the Control group. The QFL group will receive a quit smoking program that lasts for 8 weeks with two parts- 1. 4 sessions with a trained counselor who will discuss the participants' smoking habits and strategies to help them quit. 2. Messages sent to the participants' cell phone using WeChat. The Control group will not have sessions with a trained counselor or receive messages sent to their cell phone. Both groups will be offered nicotine replacement therapy and a self-help guide with information about quitting smoking.
Cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases risk for catastrophic pregnancy complications, growth retardation, other adverse infant health problems, and later-in-life chronic conditions. One group that is particularly at risk for these complications are Alaska Native (AN) women. Prevalence of smoking during pregnancy is disproportionally high among AN women compared to US pregnant women overall (i.e., ~36% and ~13%, respectively) and few smoking-cessation interventions have been evaluated among this population. A substantive barrier to offering evidence-based interventions to AN women is the geographic remoteness of Alaska. The most effective intervention for promoting smoking cessation during pregnancy is financial incentives in which participants earn incentives (e.g., cash) contingent on objective evidence of smoking abstinence. This intervention has been adapted to be delivered entirely through a smartphone meaning that the geographic remoteness of Alaska will not be a barrier with this intervention. Participants submit videos of themselves completing breath and saliva tests, and incentives are then delivered through the application if the tests indicate smoking abstinence. Through a collaboration between the University of Vermont and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the goal of this study is to examine the preliminary feasibility and efficacy of this smartphone-based incentives intervention among AN women. Pregnant AN women will be recruited through ads posted on social media. Eligible participants who complete the informed consent process will be randomized to either: Best Practices or Best Practices + Incentives. In the Best Practices condition, participants will receive three brief educational sessions and a referral to the Alaska state quitline. In the Best Practices + Incentives condition, participants will receive the same education sessions and quitline referral, plus financial incentives contingent on the smartphone-based testing of breath and saliva specimens indicating abstinence from recent smoking. Outcomes will include point prevalence smoking abstinence at assessments conducted in late pregnancy and 4-, 8-, 12-, and 24-weeks postpartum, continuous abstinence during antepartum and postpartum, and perceived barriers and facilitators of treatment engagement. Overall, this project has the potential to address disparities in access to efficacious, evidence-based smoking cessation treatments among AN pregnant women.
This project seeks to determine the effectiveness of two types of interventions to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in residential buildings. One intervention is geared toward all building residents (resident endorsement) and the other targets smokers (smoking reduction via relocation and reduction in personal smoking/cessation) with the goal of reducing personal smoking and secondhand smoke exposure.
