Fear of Other's Judgment, Self-esteem and Use of Social Networks Among Students

Fear of being judged negatively by others can lead to avoidance of social situations or even social isolation. If the intensity of this fear is excessive and results in significant impairment of functioning or significant suffering, the subject may suffer from social anxiety. The considerable growth of social networks in a decade has led to the emergence of new behaviors among young people. Individuals spend on average 2 hours and 27 minutes per day with differences in usage: time spent, social network used, function sought. The use of these networks may be reasonable and moderate but may also be excessive and abusive (Amnon, 2014). Some authors even talk about addiction or dependence on social networks (Perales and Billieux, 2020) even if the existence of this disorder is not consensus. People who fear being judged negatively by others may be more at risk of misuse of social networks. Indeed, the use of social networks would compensate for their existing problems (Kardefelt-Winther, 2014) and would thus be a new emotional management strategy. It would also reduce dreaded social situations such as face-to-face exchanges (Weidman and Rodebaugh, 2012; Yen and Ko, 2012). Self-esteem is defined as a subjective judgment of oneself in relation to one's values and vision of the real and ideal self (Rosenberg. 1979). The greater the gap between the vision of the real self and the ideal self, the lower the self-esteem.

The Efficacy of Treatments to Improve Self-esteem

The goal of this study is to examine the effectivity of two self-esteem interventions (COMET (Korrelboom) and CBT (De Neef)) in a general psychiatric population. The main questions it aims to answer are: - is there a difference between the two interventions in effectiveness on increasing self-esteem? - is there a difference between the two interventions in effect on levels of anxiety, depression and general mental health? - are found effects on levels of anxiety, depression and general mental health associated with changes in self-esteem? - is the ability to use imagination a moderator for outcomes in both conditions? Participants are randomised over both conditions. At baseline (T0), end of treatment (T1) and follow-up at 6 months (T2) several outcome measures are conducted, such as RSES, DASS and MHC-SF.

Promoting Social-emotional Development and Self-esteem in Primary School Students

This is an effectiveness study into a program ("HiRO") for improving social-emotional development, self esteem and the perceived classroom peer context in primary school students (aged 4-13 years). To this end, schools are divided into three conditions based on the choice of the schools (non-randomized): 1) School As Usual, 2) HiRo without judo classes, and 3) HiRO with judo classes. In all participating schools, social-emotional skills, self-image, emotional problems, and classroom peer context are measured three times by means of questionnaires (both self-report and parent-report). In The Netherlands primary schools are obliged to offer students training in social-emotional development. Schools can decide to develop their own program or make use of existing programs delivered by third parties, such as HiRO. In this study HiRO is compared to school as usual, that is, any other program offered to promote social -emotional development than HiRO. The main questions to answer are: - What is the effect of HiRO on the development of prosocial behavior? - What is the effect of HiRO on the development of emotional problems (depression, anxiety)? - What is the effect of HiRO on self-esteem? - What is the effect of HiRO on perceived peer context? Researchers will compare HiRO with and without judo to "school as usual" testing the following hypotheses: HiRO will result in increased prosocial skills as compared to school as usual. HiRO will result in decreased emotional problems as compared to school as usual. HiRO will result in increased self-esteem as compared to school as usual. HiRO will result in improved perceived peer context as compared to school as usual.

Immersive Training on Metacognitive Capacities of Young People

Metacognitive abilities and self-knowledge are necessary for psychological maturation and good mental functioning of individuals. It is generally agreed that an adequate representation of oneself and others is essential to establish functional interpersonal relationships. These metacognitive abilities are not adequately developed in patients with various mental health problems, such as personality disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, and depression, and are associated with the severity of the pathology. Self-awareness is a central element that begins to consolidate during adolescence. For that reason, the investigators aim to evaluate the effects of immersive training on the metacognitive abilities and self-knowledge of young people. Based on the repertory grid technique (RGT), our research team has developed a brief immersive training to enhance metacognitive abilities. This intervention facilitates the exploration of personal identity in a safe environment. Specifically, it is an immersion in the person's own world of meanings using Virtual Reality (VR), with the Explore Your Meanings (EYME) tool, a technological platform created to help mental health professionals to enhance the personal development and therapeutic change of their clients. Expected results include an increase in participants' self-concept clarity, metacognition, and reflective function as well as a deeper knowledge about their relationship with various aspects of self-knowledge and self-esteem.

LH Canine Therapy Study

The goal of this pilot project is to test for initial efficacy of the Recovery & Care Canine-Assisted Therapy program that has been developed and implemented in Lawrence Hall, a Chicago-based residential treatment center for maltreated youth, in comparison to a matched sample of youth from Lawrence Hall receiving treatment as usual. Results from this project will provide preliminary evidence of whether a structured, goal-oriented intervention program focused on dog training activities has direct impact on increasing youth emotional self-regulation, impulse control, and self-efficacy, which are important targets for intervention among youth with mental health problems. If successful, this project could lead to a larger, randomized control clinical trials study that tests the longitudinal impact of the program that could further lead to national dissemination of the Recovery & Care curriculum as an alternative therapeutic approach.

Resilience and Obesity Prevention in Adolescents

This is a cross-sectional observational study where investigators are trying to see the associations between factors contributing to obesity (dietary behavior and physical activity), resilience (self-efficacy, self-esteem, and optimism), and HRQoL in Indian adolescents. The key research question and sub-questions are as follows: Main research question: Is there a relationship between resilience (measured as self-efficacy) and obesity in children? 1. What is the level of other resilience factors (measured as self-esteem and optimism) among overweight, obese, and normal-weight adolescents? Are there differences between the groups? Are there differences between ages? Are there differences between genders? 2. Is there a relationship between resilience factors (measured as self-esteem and optimism) and HRQoL among overweight, obese, and normal-weight adolescents? Are there differences between the groups? Are there differences between ages? Are there differences between genders? 3. Is low resilience (measured as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and optimism) associated with overweight or obesity among adolescents and a lower HRQoL? Are there differences between ages? MICBT for Non-underweight Adults With Eating Disorders

Eating disorders (ED) are severe but treatable conditions, but there are large margin for improvements in terms of efficacy and adherence. There is room to explore new treatment options who are either more capable to retain patients in therapy, more effective. Alternative their efficacy may match the ones of current available treatments but offer new options to ones that did not respond to available therapies. Here the investigators explored if a combination of CBT-focused plus Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy (MIT) is an empirically supported therapy for personality disorders and could be a new viable treatment option for non-underweight ED. MIT targets some aspects of ED such as poor awareness of mental states and maladaptive interpersonal schemas that are not included in the transdiagnostic model underlying the most investigated empirically supported treatment for ED that is CBT-E. It is reasonable therefore that targeting these aspects of psychopathology can be a path to treatment adherence and effectiveness

Evaluation of Self-esteem Group Therapy for Eating Disorders

Self-esteem group is a novel, manualised group programme designed for adolescent inpatients with eating disorders. Research questions: Does the self-esteem group improve self-esteem in adolescent inpatients with eating disorders? Are any changes in self-esteem maintained at 4 week follow-up after the group? Does eating disorder psychopathology improve more during admission for those who complete the self-esteem group compared to those who do not complete the group? Background: Low self-esteem has been established as a strong predictor of onset, maintenance and relapse in eating disorders. For patients with low self-esteem, change can be particularly difficult to achieve. The intensity of their low self-esteem leads them to strive to control their eating, weight and shape to gain a sense of self-worth and the pervasive negative view of themselves results in them seeing little or no prospect of recovery. This suggests treatment of low self-esteem is clinically and financially important. Studies have shown cognitive behavioural based group therapies improve self esteem in adults with eating disordersÍž however research including adolescents is limited. This research will contribute to the evidence base for self-esteem interventions in adolescents and inform the effectiveness of a new treatment. The research will be funded by Newbridge House, an inpatient unit for children and adolescents with eating disorders. Design: Inpatients at Newbridge House aged 11 - 18, fulfilling DSM-V criteria for an eating disorder will be recruited.Participants will be randomly allocated to a case or control group. Cases will receive the 6 week self-esteem group in addition to treatment as usual (TAU) and will be compared with controls who receive TAU. Both groups will complete a questionnaire pre-group, post-group and 4 weeks post-group. Admission and discharge questionnaires routinely collected will be examined to assess change in eating disorder psychopathology.

The Effects of Pregnancy Classes and Contributing Factors to Postpartum Depression

It is recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Committee on Obstetric Practice that all obstetricians screen each women for postpartum depression and anxiety with a validated instrument. Although much effort is made, the contributing factors still lack in the literature due to its multi-factorial nature and complexity. In addition, the effects of prenatal education classes remain understudied. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate the prevalence, characteristics and contributing factors of the postpartum depression. In addition, the change in prevalence and characteristics of the postpartum depression among women who had prenatal classes and not will also be assessed.
