Alcohol Consumption, Intention Implementation and Mindfulness Meditation (ADUC-Volet 3 " Prevention ") - ALCOMEDIIT

Alcohol Consumption, Intention Implementation and Mindfulness Meditation (ADUC-Volet 3 " Prevention ")

The emergence of new problematic alcohol consumption practices among young people requires new dynamics in prevention strategies. In this context, the ADUC project (Alcohol and Drugs at the University of Caen) aims to develop a better understanding of alcohol consumption, and in particular the practice of binge drinking (BD), in order to develop relevant and adapted prevention tools. The ALCOMEDIIT study (IRESP funding; Agreement 20II31-00 - ADUC part 3) is a randomized controlled trial that focuses on the specific determinant of impulsivity. The main objective of this experiment in social psychology is to validate a program for the prevention of BD practices based on motivational interviewing (MI) associated with intention implementation (II) and mindfulness meditation (MBM) in a student environment.

Pilot Study on Training Emerging Adults Skills in Navigating College - SINC

Pilot Study on Mindfulness Meditation and Behavioral Flexibility Among Emerging Adults

Lifetime risk for developing an alcohol use disorder increases with earlier onset of alcohol consumption. This risk may reflect a tendency for escalated alcohol intake among youth due to immature executive control, leading to more frequent binge drinking, which is associated with more alcohol-related problems. Binge drinking is associated with deficits in behavioral flexibility, which may suggest impaired control networks that contribute to automatic behavior. Individuals with an alcohol or substance use disorder (A/SUD) exhibit attentional bias toward drug- or alcohol-related stimuli that have attained salience through consistent use. Reward history increases attention towards non-drug stimuli, even among individuals with no lifetime A/SUD. Preliminary data (from Dr. Boettiger's lab) from a nationally representative US adult sample using data collected via Prolific found that a questionnaire measure of mindfulness moderates the relationship between alcohol misuse and attention to reward. Given evidence that heavy alcohol drinking impairs behavioral flexibility, which in turn promotes escalating intake, insight into the relationship between mindfulness and behavioral flexibility could inspire new strategies to prevent alcohol and substance use disorders in people at elevated risk.

Virtual Reality and Meditation for Fibromyalgia

Use of Virtual Reality for Musculoskeletal Pain

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a particularly debilitating rheumatological syndrome which affects millions of adults in the United States. The condition presents with widespread chronic muscular pain and reduced pain thresholds, fatigue, insomnia, and negative affect. Chronic pain that is caused by FM can have significant effects on physical function, psychological parameters, and overall quality of life. Currently, there is a need for safe and effective non-pharmacologic pain-management strategies for FM, and research has shown that virtual reality (VR) may be a useful tool for some of these clients. The literature has suggested improvements in pain scores on a visual analog scale (VAS) for adults with a variety of rheumatological issues, including FM. Additional research has demonstrated that affect was improved for clients with FM who participated in a 10-minute VR mindfulness session. Such findings highlight the potential benefits of VR and mindfulness meditation for clients with FM. However, there is a great deal that remains unknown about the effectiveness of these pain management techniques. Therefore, this pilot study will examine and compare the effectiveness of combining VR and meditation for improving symptoms of FM in adults. We hypothesize that a VR meditation session will facilitate greater improvements in pain, affect, and physiological vital stats as compared to a non-immersive meditation intervention.

Meditation in Inflammatory Dermatosis - MediDermIn

Evaluation of the Therapeutic Efficacy of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program as an Adjuvant Therapy in Patients With Moderate Pruritic Inflammatory Dermatosis (Psoriasis or Atopic Dermatitis)

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are multifactorial inflammatory dermatoses, with a very high prevalence, reaching more than 120 million patients in the world. Although the physiopathological mechanisms are not yet clearly defined, these inflammatory dermatoses involve an interaction between the immune system and the epidermal cells, severe skin inflammation and often very intense pruritus. The objectives of an effective management should be to treat lesions in order to reduce them, but also to reduce itching and allow the patients to accept and cope with their pathology, without neglecting an improvement in the "Dermatology Life Quality Index" (DLQI) and in the psychological state, sometimes depressive, of the patient. Itching is defined as "a feeling that needs to be scratched urgently" and can cause significant distress along with pain. It severely impacts the quality of life and the quality of sleep. Chronic itching is associated with increased stress, anxiety, and other mood disorders. In turn, stress and anxiety exacerbate the itching, leading to a vicious cycle of pruritus - scratching that affects patient behavior (excessive scratching) and worsens disease prognosis and quality of life. Much research over the past few decades has demonstrated the effect of mindfulness meditation on emotional and cognitive responsiveness, cognitive flexibility, rumination, self-compassion and mindfulness, but also on acute pain, anxiety, stress, depression, cardiovascular disease, eating disorders, cancer and cognitive loss with age. Several studies have shown the impact of mindfulness on brain function and immunity, with evidence for the association between mindfulness and changes in the levels of markers characteristic of immune system activity and inflammation, known to be increased in psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. The objective is to evaluate the effect of mental training in the regulation of stress and emotions through mindfulness meditation in patients with moderate, itchy atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, not treated with systemic agents (e.g.: biotherapies). This project is based on the premise that mental training in the regulation of stress and emotions through meditation would reduce the effects of the infernal itch-scratch cycle, alleviating pruritus, thus improving the well-being and mental health of patients while reducing their inflammatory skin lesions and limiting the appearance of new lesions.

Meditation and Youth Mental Health - Med-YMH

Effect of Meditation on the Young Mental Health - A Feasibility Pilot Quasi-experimental Study

Youth is a crucial time of life when physical and mental well-being is critical. Students are vulnerable due to academic and pandemic stresses. Meditation research has been showing effects on improved parameters of mental health (sleep quality, attention, memory, and concentration), emotional wellbeing (reduced stress and anxiety), and physiological parameters (better metabolism, circulation, immunity, etc.), which influence the life and academic performance of students. This study is designed to examine the feasibility of conducting a meditation intervention among students of a small liberal arts university in Pakistan. Future larger and longer randomized controlled clinical trials on high-risk youth may be planned at a later stage to see the impact on academic performance and career progression.
