Audiovisual Aid Pilot Study

The Effect of Audiovisual Aids on Perioperative Stress Response, Pain and Overall Experience - a Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Little is known about perioperative stress responses and possible anxiety mitigating factors like audiovisual aids or IV sedation. Most studies use surrogate markers and retrospective questionnaires, and are not based on real-time gathered data. Skin conductance measurements allow the sympathetic discharge to be evaluated down to fractions of a second and enable us to continuously monitor stress responses as skin conductance responses/per second during the perioperative management. In our study, the investigators propose to examine the effect of personal audiovisual equipment (audio/video goggles) on perioperative stress, pain, and overall experience in patients undergoing ambulatory meniscectomy under spinal anesthesia. Patients will be randomly assigned to either receive traditional sedation or light sedation in addition to audiovisual equipment. The investigators hope to determine outcome estimates of the use of this equipment on stress levels using skin conductance measurements, request for further sedation, postoperative pain levels and analgesic consumption, time to discharge readiness, and overall patient satisfaction, and collect thus far unavailable data on the stress response to perioperative stresses (such as IV insertion and spinal placement) in order to allow for power analyses for future studies.

STI/HIV Prevention Intervention for Adolescents in Singapore

A Randomized Controlled Trial of an STI/HIV/AIDS Prevention Intervention for Adolescents Attending a Public STI Clinic in Singapore

A randomized controlled trial conducted on 688 sexually experienced adolescents, with 337 participants assigned to the routine program, and 351 to the new intervention developed from an assessment of their needs. All participants will complete a self-administered questionnaire and an interview on their knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), self-efficacy, skills in negotiating for sexual abstinence or condom use, and sexual behaviors at baseline and at 6- and 12-months' post- intervention. All will be tested for STIs. Participants in the intervention group will receive 4 individual counseling sessions on STIs/HIV knowledge, life skills, secondary abstinence, safer sex and healthy relationships over 1 year. They will also be referred to counselors for proactive social and emotional support delivered through electronic media and other means. The control group will receive the usual counseling session at first and follow-up clinic visit.

Impact of RUTF on Body Composition, Anemia and Zinc Status of PLWHA - PLWHA

Daily Consumption of Ready-to-use Peanut-based Therapeutic Food Increased Fat Free Mass, Improved Anemia Status But Has no Impact on Zinc Status of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)

A clinical trial was conducted in 65 PLWH randomly allocated to receive standard hospital diet alone (Control group: n=33), or the diet combined with 100 g/day of RUTF (RUTF group: n=32). Individual dietary intakes were measured and compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for PLWH. Body composition was measured by bio-impedance analysis (BIA), hemoglobin by HemoCue and plasma zinc concentration by atomic absorption spectrometry and adjusted to infection (CRP and α1-AGP). All measures were conducted at baseline, 3 weeks and after 9 weeks home-based follow up.

Supporting Doctor-patient Communication in Oncology

Supporting Doctor-patient Communication in Oncology. A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of Question Prompt List and Audio Recording as Communication Aids in Oncology Consultation

Aims of study While various communication aids have been evaluated separately, no studies have taken a coordinated approach combining aids with different goals to evaluate their combined impact. In this study the investigators will use two communication aids; a QPL and an audio recording of the consultation. QPLs includes question concerning treatment options, but few studies involving QPLs have explored whether QPLs result in patients taking a more active role in the consultation. To our knowledge there have not been studies which objectively try to explore whether patients receiving QPLs participates in shared decision making to a greater extent, except for one ongoing Italian trial of breast cancer patients. To explore and describe how communication aids as a QPL and an audio recording of the consultation improve the first doctor-patient consultation at the oncology outpatient clinic by 1. Encouraging patients/caregivers to ask more questions, particularly about sensitive topics such as prognosis (as an effect of QPL alone) 2. Increasing shared decision-making (as an effect of QPL alone) 3. Improving overall satisfaction with the consultation and information retrieved (as an effect of both communication aids) 4. Affecting quality of life/anxiety/depression (as an effect of both communication aids)

Tele-educative Program to Improve Adherence to the Use of Hearing Aids in Patients With Hearing Loss

Tele-educative Program to Improve Adherence to the Use of Hearing Aids in Patients With Hearing Loss: a Randomized Clinical Trial

Hearing loss is the third most common chronic condition in over 65 years people, it is estimated that 77.8% of older adults suffer from it. However, there are reports of adherence to the use of hearing aids of only to 40%. The objective of this project is to measure the effectiveness of a tele-educative intervention to improve adherence to the use of hearing aids. A randomized controlled trial was performed. The active branch consists of the implementation of an educational program called Active Communication Education, consisting of 4 sessions with a trained rehabilitator. Participants will be also monitored by telephone headset use by personnel trained for three months. The control arm will consist of the usual care received by these patients. All participants will be assessed at home at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after randomization.

Use of Hearing Aids. Development and Implementation of a Counselling Program for Hearing Aid Users

Use of Hearing Aids. Development and Implementation of a Counselling Program for Hearing Aid Users.

The proportion of elderly people is expected to increase greatly within the next couple of decades, resulting in a proportional increase in the need for hearing rehabilitation. However, studies suggest that as many as 40% of hearing aids are never or seldom used. Thus, a major challenge for audiological rehabilitation is facilitating the use of fitted hearing aids. This study has four objectives; 1) to evaluate the effect of advanced notice of a follow-up appointment on hearing aid use, 2) to implement a specialized counselling program based on MI, 3) to identify barriers to hearing aid use, and 4) to objectively assess hearing aid use with datalogging technology.
