Near Infrared Light for the Treatment of Painful Peripheral Neuropathy

A Phase III, Double Blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Study to Assess the Efficacy of Adjunct Monochromatic Near-infrared Photoenergy (MIRE) in Patients With Painful Axonal Peripheral Neuropathy

The purpose of this study is to determine if near infrared light therapy is effective in decreasing pain in patients with painful peripheral neuropathy. The hypothesis of the study was that the percentage of subjects with at least 40% improvement in visual analog scale score for pain after 4 weeks of treatment is higher for Monochromatic Near-infrared Photoenergy (MIRE) treatment than for sham treatment.

Prevention of Cisplatin- or Oxaliplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy With Alpha-Lipoic Acid: A Placebo-Controlled Phase III Trial

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Chemoprotective drugs, such as alpha-lipoic acid, may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy. Alpha-lipoic acid may also prevent damage to nerves that carry information to and from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. It is not known whether alpha-lipoic acid is more effective than placebo in preventing peripheral neuropathy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying alpha-lipoic acid to see how well it works compared to placebo in preventing peripheral neuropathy in patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying amifostine to see how well it works compared to observation in relieving numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in patients who have received platinum-based chemotherapy (such as cisplatin or carboplatin) for cancer.

The purpose of this study is to determine if acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) reduces pain, numbness, and tingling in the feet and legs of patients with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)-associated peripheral neuropathy. Another purpose is to determine if ALC is safe and tolerable in HIV patients who have taken certain anti-HIV drugs.
