Rapid Acupuncture Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The summary of this research study is to test the effectiveness of a rapid "rescue" acupuncture technique as a non-pharmacologic alternative treatment for the reduction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in affected individuals as a means to improve warfighter health and enable a more rapid return to duty, especially in austere environments. Patients will receive acupuncture as a research-related course of treatment for PTSD. The PCL-5 questionnaire will be used to assess the presence and severity of PTSD symptoms. A PCL-5 questionnaire will be administered at the beginning of the first treatment of "rescue" acupuncture and after the last treatment. Following the acupuncture treatment, a PCL-5 questionnaire will be initiated at the beginning of the first week of treatment and the end of the second week of treatment at the participating Mental Health Clinic (pMHC).

Chinese Acupuncture for Chemobrain in Elderly Cancer Patients

The Role of Chinese Acupuncture for Chemotherapy Induced Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Cancer Patients

Elderly cancer patients would suffer cognitive impairment due to chemotherapy, and a series of neurocognitive symptoms, known as "chemobrain". Chinese acupuncture plus herbal decoctions is an emerging therapeutic option for chemotherapy induced cognitive impairment in elderly cancer patients, despite limited supporting evidence. By evaluating this novel Chinese medicine mode in elderly cancer patients at our institution, the investigators aim to contribute to the existing knowledge in this area while establishing a basis for further research. The investigators will perform a study of all cases of "chemobrain" related elderly cancer patients treated with Chinese acupuncture from 2023 to 2025. The investigators would enroll 168 elderly cancer patients with clinically confirmed chemobrain; those for Chinese acupuncture will be treated with electroacupuncture (2 sessions per week over 8 weeks) ; the others will be received conventional drug therapy, or palliative-intent therapy. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) will be served as the primary outcome. Digit span test will be the secondary outcome for attentional function and working memory. The quality of life and multiple functional assessments will also be evaluated.

Using Ultrasound and Acupuncture to Explore the De-qi Location and Reaction of Specific Acupoints

According to ancient literature, when de qi occurs in the process of acupuncture, the patient may experience sensations such as soreness, numbness, heaviness, swelling. Meanwhile, the acupuncturist may experience the sensation of "a fish taking a bite from the bait on a hook". However, for a beginner at acupuncture, before they have learned to trigger the de qi sensation, it is hard for them to learn according to the ambiguous definition of "a fish taking a bite from the bait on a hook" and thus hard to know whether they have reached the correct location and stimulated de-qi. In this study, through multiple experienced acupuncturists acupuncture multiple test subjects, the investigators will locate the location and the reaction of de qi on the acupoint Quchi (LI11) with ultrasound observation and recording. Through the ultrasound teaching and guidance, the investigators will test whether it is possible to reversely use ultrasound imaging to guide less experienced acupuncturists to the de qi location and elicit de qi response on multiple test subjects. Therefore, the investigators propose this study to test the following hypothesis:"There is a specific anatomical site where de qi occurs at LI11, and it is possible to use ultrasound imaging to guide learners to reach that location and trigger de-qi and that it is applicable to other acupoints". To explore the above hypothesis, the investigators will target the following specific aims. Aim 1: Use ultrasound record and indicate the precise anatomical location and reaction when de qi occurs on acupoint LI11. Aim 2: Simultaneously record the physicians' needling sensations, the participants' needling sensations, twitch response of the participant under ultrasound images. Aim 3: Prove the feasibility of using ultrasound to guide inexperienced physicians to reach the correct location and elicit de qi sensation on the participants. Aim 4: Discuss the relationship between de qi and pulse diagnosis. Aim 5: Apply the above procedures to other acupuncture points such as LU5(Chize), PC3 (Quze),…etc.

Notably, no acupuncture intervention studies have aimed at reducing the fatigue level and increasing the energy of the nurses working in the ICU. For this reason, this study aims to investigate the effects of auricular acupuncture applied to nurses working in the ICU, who work at a critical point in patient care in our country, work with intense work tempo, experience excessive stress, tension, fatigue, and are open to psychosocial problems such as depression and burnout, on fatigue and energy levels. This study can significantly contribute to the literature on managing the physical and psychosocial issues associated with fatigue and that similar intervention programs can be expanded in working life. This study aimed to determine the effect of auricular acupuncture applied to intensive care nurses on fatigue, energy and well-being. This was a single-blind, randomized controlled clinical study. The study was conducted in three groups: semi-permanent needle acupuncture (intervention), seed acupuncture (intervention), and a control group.

Chemotherapy is a cancer therapy performed on advanced cancer with quite good success, but this therapy has quite a lot of side effects. Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting or commonly known as CINV, is a condition of nausea and vomiting experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, with a prevalence of around 80% of all patients undergoing chemotherapy, and 40% has the potential to become severe. This study aims to determine the efficacy of a new acupuncture modality, namely the press needle, in preventing CINV symptoms in pediatric patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the most common entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity, is caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel CTs is a very common complication found in pregnancy, which is reported as high as 62% in pregnant females.
