Filter by:Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a newly implemented evaluation standard for medical student and is a determinant part of the national competition they have to undergo. Medical studies, especially during examen period, are significantly associated with risk of developping depressions or anxious trouble, wich led to lesser performance, impaired memorization and impaired workload capacities. Relaxation breathing techniques coupled with heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback and meditation are procedures used to reduce the stress level. There is currently no study on the effect of stress management procedures on the performance during OSCE for medical student.
In the United States, people of color (POC) are disproportionally affected by stressors related to race/ethnicity compared with their non-Latinx White (NLW). Considering POC exposed to race-related stress are at high risk of developing a mental health disorder, there is a clear need for treatments that allow individuals to cope effectively with these stressors. Among many evidence-based treatments available, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) may be particularly well suited to help POC cope. MBIs are hypothesized to be effective via increases in mindfulness and self-compassion, as well as reductions in experiential avoidance, rumination, and emotion suppression. Despite their effectiveness, MBIs rarely reach POC. As such, innovative strategies such as self-directed app-based intervention may reduce the treatment gap. Considering the lack of research examining the effectiveness of MBIs among POC, especially those who experience elevated levels of race-related stress, this study will employ a randomized control trial (RCT) approach to examine whether receiving an app-based MBI engages the hypothesized mechanisms of change (i.e., mindfulness, self-compassion, experiential avoidance, rumination, emotion suppression) among POC. Similarly, the study will test whether the intervention leads to decreases in the negative mental health outcomes more often associated with exposure to race-related stress (i.e., stress, anxiety, depression). Acceptability, adherence, and satisfaction also will be analyzed to explore whether a non-culturally adapted MBI is still relevant for POC who face race-related stress. Results from this trial will contribute to the nascent data on MBI acceptability and effectiveness with POC. To the investigators' knowledge, this study will also be the first to include a sample of POC recruited based on elevated levels of race-related stress, a high-risk population that is not commonly targeted in MBI research.
This project seeks to understand if a new self-help mobile phone application (called MyMoodCoach) is effective at reducing worry and overthinking, prominent risk factors that predict reduced well-being and poor mental health. As a primary outcome, the investigators are predicting that people who use the app will report more significant reductions on measures of overthinking than those who do not. The investigators also predict that people who use the app will report more significant reductions in measures of worry as well as reported symptoms of depression and anxiety. Further, it is predicted that people who use the app will report a significantly higher increase in their well-being compared to those who do not.
Anxiety that turns into an over-generalized and repetitive form is called rumination. When the literature was reviewed, rumination was found to be associated with depression and anxiety, but its applicability to physical activity (PA) behaviors has been largely overlooked. Only a few studies have examined the relationship between rumination and PA behaviors. The study was designed with the aim of determining the Turkish cultural adaptation, validity and reliability of the "Physical Activity-Specific Rumination Scale for Children (PARS-C)" questionnaire developed for children in England in order to determine the intrinsic factors affecting participation in PA.
A growing body of research implicates rumination as being a transdiagnostic risk factor involved in the development of depression and anxiety in youth. Critically, mindfulness meditation has shown significant promise in targeting rumination, and ultimately improving depressive and anxiety symptoms. Mindfulness apps offer a convenient and cost-effective means for accessing mindfulness training, while being interactive and engaging for youth. Despite their growing popularity among teens, strikingly little research has been conducted on these apps. Two critical questions have yet to be addressed: (1) what are the underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms that account for the beneficial effects of these apps and (2) for whom is app-based mindfulness well-suited. To address these gaps, adolescents (ages 13-18) will be randomly assigned to an app-delivered mindfulness course vs. a control condition and will complete pre- and post-intervention resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans to probe static and dynamic functional connectivity within - and between - brain networks strongly implicated in mindfulness training and rumination. In addition, cognitive tasks will be administered at pre- and post-intervention to assess attentional control abilities putatively enhanced by mindfulness training. Finally, mindfulness skills and changes in rumination will be assessed via smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA). First, the investigators will test whether changes in (1) brain functional connectivity, (2) attentional control and (3) acquisition and use of mindfulness skills mediate between-group (i.e., app vs. control) differences in the reduction of rumination. Second, the investigators will test whether a machine learning model incorporating baseline clinical, demographic, and psychosocial characteristics can be used to identify which adolescents are predicted to benefit from app-based mindfulness training.
Teen participants (ages 13-17) will be randomly assigned to either an experimental (the Happify Teens digital platform), or a waitlist control group. The study includes an 8-week intervention period and a 1-month follow up period.
In this study the investigators are examining the neuronal processes of a mindfulness based emotion regulation training for reducing depressive rumination. The research of depressive rumination helps in the developement of new therapies for depressive disorders. Goal of this project is to have a look at the coherences between stress, mindfulness resources, depressive rumination and their neuronal correlates. Therefore the investigators are collecting the data of 48 patients with a depressive diagnosis in a randomized intervention-study with a treatment as usual (TAU) waiting-control-list versus an active intervention group. An additional 48 healthy control subjects are planned to be measured.
Attention control for external information and cognitive control for internal information play a causal role in emotion regulation according to different theories and empirical research. Former research in the lab of the investigators has shown positive effects of an interactive attention control/interpretation training, in which participants learned to unscramble scrambled sentences ("life is my a party mess") in a positive way ("my life is a party") by getting eye-tracking feedback about attention for positive ("party") vs. negative information ("mess"). After the training, participants could better reinterpret negative photos in a positive way. Attention- and cognitive control mechanisms prior to negative stressors (proactive control) and after negative stressors (reactive control) seem to play a role in this. Moreover, research has shown that low perceived control and negative expectations about future emotion regulation skills results in lower proactive control and a higher need of reactive control. Based on this, the assumption can be made that the effects of attention control training - targeting reactive control - could benefit from adding techniques that affect proactive control (e.g. psycho-education). In the present study this is investigated by testing a new two weeks attention control training to see if this has a positive effect on stress related complaints, depressive symptoms and emotion regulation. Given that the current COVID-19 pandemic is perceived as very stressful by a lot of people, the training could help here. Participants between 18 to 65 years of age are recruited during this corona crisis. The attention control training is a new smartphone based application. Participants have to unscramble scrambled sentences into grammatically correct sentences. In the training condition, participants are asked to unscramble the scrambled sentences in a positive way. By swiping, participants can see part of the sentences. This gives the investigators an image about the processing of the sentences. This procedure allows to measure how long participants attend to positive and negative words. In the training condition participants get feedback about the duration they process positive and negative words. In the control group participants unscramble the sentences as fast as possible without feedback on emotional attention. Participants only get feedback about the speed at which sentences are unscrambled. Before and after the 10 training sessions, attention of the participants is measured to see the effects of the training. Questionnaires on depressive and anxiety complaints, emotion regulation strategies, well-being and stress are administered before and after the training. There is also a follow-up measure 2 months after the training. Both groups (training and control) watch a psycho-education video before the start of the training.
Some fibromyalgia patients may use inappropriate emotional regulation strategies to respond to pain. Rumination could be one of this inefficient regulation strategies. The investigators believe that the use of rumination strategies to respond to the discomfort of daily physical activity would maintain and aggravate a negative emotional state after the effort. Distraction would be a more effective strategy to cope with pain. From this data, the investigators want to explore the causal link between rumination and negative affectivity after physical activity in fibromyalgia using an experimental design.
This study proposes: to evaluate 1) whether the combination of virtual reality (VR) and active tDCS provides better rumination attenuation than the combination of VR and tDCS placebo 2) the acceptability and experiential experience of combining these two well known medical devices.
