The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Personalized Support for Progress (PSP) intervention in a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Women's Wellness Clinic. PSP uses a peer support provider to help women identify their primary concern, develop a personalized plan to help address that concern, and provide practical and emotional support to implement the plan. The primary aim is to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and utility of PSP and the research protocol.

Brief Stresses Experimental Study

The goal of this study is to examine the impact of psychological stress on DNA integrity by conducting an experiment under controlled conditions with healthy volunteers to directly test the extent to which acute stress increases DNA damage, while simultaneously testing the blocking effects of pre-treatment with propranolol, and exploring key hypothesized mediators and moderators of the severity of the DNA damage.

Emotional Support Messages Following a Cancer Diagnosis

Cancer patients will be randomly shown one of 18 emotional support messages created by the research team that differ based on how much of the message consists of positive statements and how much consists of negative statements. The messages with negative statements also differ based on whether the negative statements occur at the start or end of the message. After viewing the message, participants have the opportunity to rate the effectiveness of the message, to what extent the message made them feel better, and to what extent the message affects how they view the message provider as a useful source of emotional support.

30 Day Mobile App Programs for Stress Management in Customer Service Representatives

Burnout and stress at work can make individuals less productive, which can carry over into their personal and at-home lives and negatively impact health. Customer service representatives are under especially high strain as they are exposed to significant interpersonal conflict at work, both with frustrated customers and with pressure from coworkers and supervisors. However, recent research has found that different stress management interventions (e.g., mindfulness meditation training) can increase job satisfaction and work productivity. However, individuals with significant stress might find these training program classes difficult to attend with their busy schedules. Newer interventions have focused on smartphone mobile applications as an effective delivery system for these training programs. Thus, the purpose of this project is to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing two different stress management smartphone app programs to evaluate effects on job-related outcomes, functional and structural brain outcomes, and biology.

Psychosocial, Environmental, and Chronic Disease Trends in Puerto Rico

The overall goal is to identify trends and longitudinal associations in psychosocial, food-related, and cardiometabolic risk factors that can guide public health priorities and future research needs aimed at reducing cardiovascular-related disparities in Puerto Rico. To this end, investigators will establish 'PROSPECT: Puerto Rico Observational Study of Psychosocial, Environmental, and Chronic disease Trends', an island-wide, longitudinal population cohort of 2,000 adults (30-75 years) in PR recruited with a community-wide sampling strategy, and assessed in a network of several partner clinics across the island. The study will collect comprehensive data on multiple psychosocial, dietary, and food-related factors, CVD biological markers, and medical record data, with follow-up at 2-years, and will assess variations by urban-rural area and by timing before-after Maria.

Breastfeed a Better Youngster: the BABY Study

This research will investigate different aspects of the 'signalling' between mother and infant during breastfeeding in a stressful situation following late preterm and early term delivery, when breastfeeding is often challenging. The researcher will conduct a single-blinded randomised controlled trial in Chinese mothers who deliver a late preterm infant (LPI; 34 0/7-36 6/7 weeks of gestation) and mothers who deliver a early term infant (ETI; 37 0/7-37 6/7) and plan to exclusively breast-feed.This study will investigate the role of the milk and infant gut microbiome as a potential 'signal' in this process. A relaxation intervention (meditation tape) will be used to reduce stress levels in mothers who are expressing breast-milk or breastfeeding their infant (born at 34 0/7-37 6/7 weeks completed gestation). This study will investigate whether lower levels of stress in the mother result in more successful and effective breastfeeding, leading to improved infant outcomes (better growth, longer sleep duration and reduced crying).

Stress, Salt Excretion, and Nighttime Blood Pressure

The study will examine urinary sodium excretion induced by psychological stress and its diurnal pattern as a novel biological mechanism that may underlie an abnormal diurnal pattern of blood pressure. The study will test the hypotheses that lower stress-induced sodium excretion is associated with an abnormal diurnal pattern of sodium excretion, and that an abnormal diurnal pattern of sodium excretion is associated with an abnormal diurnal pattern of blood pressure. Primary Aim 1: To examine the association between urinary sodium excretion after provoked psychological stress and the diurnal pattern of sodium excretion. Primary Aim 2: To examine the association between the diurnal pattern of sodium excretion and the diurnal pattern of BP. Secondary Aim: To examine whether the association between urinary sodium excretion after provoked stress and the diurnal pattern of sodium excretion is modified by ecological momentary levels of perceived stress, experienced during the daytime period. Exploratory Aim: To determine the socio-demographic, behavioral, and psychological traits, chronic stress, and biological stress-related factors that are associated with lower stress-induced sodium excretion. Identification of these factors will help determine who is at risk for having a differential sodium excretion response to psychological stress.
