Filter by:Scares data exists concerning the prevalence of chronic liver diseases in people with psychiatric disorders. There are still many barriers to screening and linkage to care for patients having somatic illness. Moreover follow-up of these patients may be difficult because of poor access to care, sometimes marginalization, and insufficient compliance with health programs. The aim of this study is to asses acceptability of of advanced chronic liver disease screening by transient elstography (Fibroscan ®) in patients hospitalised in a psychiatric unit.
RATIONALE: The access to and uptake of evidence-based behavioral parent training for children with behavioral difficulties (i.e., oppositional, defiant, aggressive, hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive behavior) are currently limited because of a scarcity of certified therapists and long waiting lists. These problems are in part due to the long and sometimes perceived as rigid nature of most evidence-based programs and result in few families starting behavioral parent training and high dropout rates. Brief and individually tailored parenting interventions may reduce these problems and make behavioral parent training more accessible. OBJECTIVES: This project aims to increase the effective use of parent training for children with behavioral difficulties by (1) examining short and longer-term effectiveness of a new, brief, individual, and individually-tailored parent training program with optional booster sessions to prevent relapse, compared to care as usual (CAU); (2) assessing the cost-effectiveness of the brief parent training program compared to CAU. STUDY DESIGN: In this two-arm, multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT), parents are randomly assigned (1:1 ratio) to either (a) three sessions of brief behavioral parent training with optional booster sessions, or (b) CAU, as regularly provided by the involved mental healthcare centers. The study outcomes are measured at baseline before randomization (T0), one week after the third session for parents in the brief behavioral parent training arm and eight weeks after T0 for parents in the CAU arm (first posttreatment measurement, T1), six months after T1 (second posttreatment measurement, T2) and twelve months after T1 (third posttreatment measurement, T3). STUDY POPULATION: Parents of children who experience behavioral difficulties in the home setting and were referred to a child mental healthcare center. INTERVENTION: Parents in the intervention arm receive a short, individualized, three-session training primarily aimed at reducing children's behavioral problems. It exists of two (bi)weekly individually tailored training sessions of two hours and a third session of one hour in which the training will be evaluated, and maintenance training will be provided. After that, parents wishing to receive additional support can receive single booster sessions maximum once every four weeks and/or receive care as usual. Parents in the control arm receive care as usual for children's behavioral problems. The treatments in both arms are fully embedded in Dutch routine mental health care. MAIN STUDY PARAMETERS: The primary outcome is the severity of four individual target behavioral difficulties that parents want to address in the training. Secondary outcomes are parent-reported behavioral difficulties, parent-reported child well-being, parent-reported parenting behaviors, masked audio records of mealtime routines to measure parent and child behavior, parent-reported parenting stress, parent-reported parenting self-efficacy, parent-reported parental attitude towards their child, consumption and cost of mental health care, and health state utility values. We furthermore measure evaluations of the program by parents and therapists and explore whether parental attachment, parental psychopathology, parental reward responsivity, parent-reported child reward responsivity and punishment sensitivity moderate the intervention effects.
The goal of this interventional study is to test the use of olfactory Essential Oils through a nasal stick as one of the non-medicinal strategies to propose to the patient to reduce the consumption of medication in a population of stabilized patients with psychiatric disorder. The main objective is to evaluate whether the olfaction of a mixture of essential oils can reduce the intake of BZRAs, prescribed if needed. The investigators want to compare the number of medications prescribed on "if needed" basis before and after the introduction of Essential Oils. A period prior to inclusion is used to assess the participant's frequency of BZRA use. Then, participants will received Essential Oils through a nasal stick during 4 weeks. During this period, the patient completes weekly anxiety and sleep scales and at the final visit, weekly and monthly anxiety and sleep scales.
Objective This study examines the effects of the MY LIFE treatment, a group intervention aiming to increase hope, self-worth and social support seeking in adolescents with behavioral problems in mental health care. Method This study is a group randomized controlled trial to determine whether MY LIFE is effective, by comparing care as usual with care as usual plus the MY LIFE treatment. Groups of adolescents (N= 50 per arm, Age= 14-20) with behavioral problems will be randomly assigned to either the care as usual condition or the care as usual plus the MY LIFE treatment condition. The second part of the study is focused on the subjective evaluation of the intervention by the adolescents, using qualitative research methods. Results Primary outcomes of the RCT are hope, self-worth, and seeking social support. As secondary outcomes emotional and behavioral symptoms are assessed. The second part of the study analyses the subjective evaluation of the MY LIFE treatment.
The purpose of this randomized, sham-controlled study is to evaluate the effectiveness of DBS therapy in individuals suffering from severe OCD and to investigate DBS treatment with functional [18F]FDG-Brain-PET.
The main goal of this trial is to demonstrate therapeutic efficacy of low dose ketamine in patients with OCD. We expect that ketamine will alleviate symptoms in the hours following application, but also - if effective - that the anti-OCD effects might last for several days after a single infusion.
Emotional and behavioral problems not only affect the Child's life but also have long-lasting effects on families and society and few studies have been carried out to assess these problems. During the critical phase of childhood, a child may face many emotional and social pressures that can develop physical, behavioral, social, and academic problems, negatively impacting on child's school performance, social involvement, self-esteem along with other serious mental health issues. There is a relationship between traditional parenting practices (such as parental control, love, and rejection) and emotional problems of children including depression and anxiety but very little is known about the role of mindful parenting. Globally, many studies have been done on the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems in children, whereas relatively little is known about the prevalence of child mental health problems and related risk factors in Pakistan. One of the treatments that they are using these days to provide the developmentally appropriate and therefore effective intervention that meets the mental health needs of children is Cognitive Behavior Play Therapy and mindful parenting.
The main aim of this project is to improve waiting periods for specialised psychotherapy. We will apply a brief, smartphone-based self-efficacy training to patients with psychiatric disorders waiting for specialised psychotherapy. Additionally, we will use Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to assess mood, social contacts, and other parameters daily. We will investigate whether the training can improve self-efficacy and related constructs and if it can help reduce stress and waitlist drop-outs during waiting periods. Additionally, we will investigate if the self-efficacy training has a positive effect on motivation and therapeutical relationship regarding the subsequent therapy. After a screening for eligibility, participants will be randomly assigned to intervention and control group. At baseline, participants attend a laboratory session where they are assessed for current psychiatric disorders and further relevant psychological variables. They will then either participate in the digital self-efficacy training combined with EMA (intervention group) or in EMA only (control group). Both will be conducted via a smartphone app. Subsequently, participants will be asked to fill in post questionnaires at three different time points: after having finished app usage, one month later, and after the beginning of the subsequent psychotherapy.
Research on personality disorders (PDs) in older adults is currently limited. This is surprising, given that PDs are also common in this age group. Moreover, PDs show high co-morbidity with other disorders (both mental and physical) and often have a negative effect on treatment. With this in mind, the conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment of PDs in older adults represents an important task for mental health care. To this end, problems with the current classification of PDs need to be tackled, as they currently complicate this task. The current DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Edition 5) (APA, 2013) categorical PD criteria are mainly based on the living conditions of younger adults and are therefore often not suited for PD diagnosis in older adults. Currently, however, a paradigm shift is taking place from a categorical to a dimensional approach of PDs. The "Alternative Model for Personality Disorders" (AMPD) (APA, 2013) and the approach by ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision) (WHO, 2019) are examples of new, dimensional models for PDs. These models conceptualize PDs using two dimensional criteria: (1) criterion A, which captures the overall level of personality (dis)functioning and (2) criterion B which describes the PD style by pathological/maladaptive personality traits. This paradigm shift offers the possibility to give the aging context the attention it deserves, by examining the suitability of this new dimensional conceptualization of PD among older adults. The goal of this research is to examine whether the combined AMPD and ICD-11 dimensional approach is appropriate for use in older adults. This will be done by administering instruments capturing criterion A and B in the general population in younger (18-64) and older (65 and older) adults to evaluate their age-neutrality, as well as in a clinical sample of older (65 and older) adults, to empirically evaluate its clinical relevance in later life.
Cancer patients will be recruited from the Taipei Cancer Center of Taipei Medical University. This study was divided into two phases. The first phase adopted cross-sectional study design with questionnaires to analyze the potential predictors of depressive symptoms among cancer patients. The second stage was adopted experimental study design to explore the effectiveness of nurse navigators in cancer care.
