Filter by:This study aims to investigate the effect of a brief psychotherapeutic treatment intervention based on ACT, aimed specifically at the vulnerable group of patients in psychiatric 24-hour care treated according to LPT. The study aims to investigate whether a brief number of therapeutic sessions according to ACT during inpatient care produce positive effects on personally relevant life areas for a diagnostically mixed group of patients in a psychiatric intensive care unit.
Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) often engage in problem behavior, and functional communication training (FCT) is a commonly used treatment for problem behavior in clinical settings. During FCT, children learn prosocial ways to request functional reinforcers (e.g., "their way") instead of using problem behavior. For example, a child who engages in self-injury to escape math instruction may be taught to exchange a break picture card to receive a brief break from the math task as an alternative to self-injury. While the efficacy of FCT is well established, less is known about its effects in school settings when procedures are necessarily adapted for feasibility. The purpose of this investigation is to develop and evaluate methods for implementing FCT for children with IDDs in school settings. The investigators will use single case experimental design, in which each participant will serve as their own control, to address the research questions. First, the investigators will evaluate the effects of providing higher quality, longer duration reinforcement for appropriate requests relative to problem behavior (e.g., 1-minute break with a preferred activity versus 20-s break alone) during FCT compared to providing equal reinforcement for appropriate requests and problem behavior. Next, the investigators will develop a treatment extension to teach children to complete academic work to gain access to their way. The investigators will use visual cues, such as a green and red index card to teach children when it is time to work and when they may access their way. The investigators will evaluate the effects of the treatment extension on academic work completion, appropriate requests, and problem behavior. Finally, the investigators will examine how visual cues influence children's behavior when educators implement intervention across different academic activities. The investigators will measure the extent to which educators implement programmed intervention procedures to inform treatment feasibility.
Monitoring of Biologic Signals of Elderly Patients
The aim of the present study is to examine Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) availability in humans, including healthy individuals and across a spectrum of psychiatric disorders in which alterations in the endocannabinoid system are observed.
Given the possible risks and complications of a comorbidity between psychiatric disorder and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it seems particularly important to specify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in patients with psychiatric disorders and suspected of infection, hospitalized in a specific unit, at the psychiatric, somatic and pharmacological level.
Cannabis use disorders are common among young adults in psychiatric treatment. Unfortunately, cannabis use can result in deleterious consequences for those in treatment, including developing more severe psychopathology and poorer treatment outcomes. Brief, electronic interventions for cannabis use have been developed for young adults. An example of a frequently used brief electronic intervention for cannabis users is e-Toke. e-Toke can be completed on a computer, tablet or phone, and has been shown to improve motivation to engage in substance use treatment among college students. However, e-Toke is less useful in decreasing the actual frequency of cannabis use. Additionally, e-toke is not tailored to young adults in psychiatric treatment. In this study, the investigators will develop and test a text messaging intervention that can be easily added to the popular computerized intervention e-Toke. The research staff hope the intervention will improve motivation to decrease cannabis use, and decrease the frequency of cannabis use, among young adults in psychiatric outpatient treatment. The text messages will be developed by, and tailored to, young adults in psychiatric treatment and texts will address motivations and barriers to reducing cannabis use in the context of psychiatric disorders. If the text message intervention is found to be an effective addition to e-Toke, this approach can be tested in a larger study, and then disseminated to other young adults in psychiatric treatment.
This pilot study aims to implement and evaluate Teacher-Child Interaction Training - Universal (TCIT-U), an empirically-supported classroom-based intervention aimed at improving child behavior and social-emotional skills through strengthening teacher-child relationships at a preschool that serves children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are at risk for behavioral health difficulties. The main objectives are to (a) examine TCIT-U's effects on teacher behavior, teachers' sense of efficacy, and child behavior problems and social-emotional skills compared to usual care (UC) and (b) explore the feasibility and acceptability of implementing TCIT-U at a diverse urban preschool.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of acupuncture on heart rate variability, skin conductance (sweating), and rated behavioral expression of agitation, irritability, and anxiety and mood in qualifying adults with a diagnosis of cognitively unimpaired, or probable Alzheimer's Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia or Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Study subjects will all receive one real acupuncture treatment; mood scales will be assessed before and after. Massachusetts General Hospital is paying for this research to be done.
This randomized controlled trial evaluates the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic intervention, the Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), to address the mental health needs of children and adolescents age 8-17 who have been affected by armed conflict in Kachin State, Myanmar. The 10-12 week talk-based counseling treatment, delivered by community mental health workers, will be evaluated against a wait-list control group. This project follows on a recently completed trial of CETA for adult trauma survivors from Myanmar along the Thai-Myanmar border which found that CETA was acceptable, accessible, and effective in improving mental health and functioning of adults. The investigators hypothesize that the intervention will be similarly effective for improving the mental health and functioning of children and adolescents.
The main objectives of this study are to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effects of a CPS parent group on outcomes for a sample of parents of children ages 3 to 5 compared to outcomes after attending a parenting group that promotes behavioral (operant) parenting. We hypothesize that guardians in the CPS group will report a better understanding of how neurocognitive skills relate to children's behaviors, greater improvements in child functioning and behavior, and greater reductions in parents' stress than those in the comparison group.
