Reduction of Postoperative Pain, Nausea and Vomiting

Aim of this prospective study was to assess the quality of postoperative care in a postoperative anaesthesia care unit (PACU) using postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting as well as their reduction as quality markers. So far, only sparse data related to this topic are available and there are currently no established quality markers of a PACU service.

Prospective Study on Cesarean Wound Outcomes

This study will investigate whether the placement of silver impregnated dressings beginning in the OR will improve wound healing in patients undergoing cesarean delivery compared to traditional Telfa pads. This study will also explore the presumed improvement in scar integrity when silver impregnated dressings are used compared to the Telfa pads. The study will compare the percentage of patients who develop a surgical site infection after application of silver impregnated dressings versus standard Telfa dressings. Investigators will also assess the cosmetic appearance and pain of the cesarean section scar at the patient's one week and 6 week post-operative visits.

Post-operative Oral Morphine Versus Ibuprofen

Children 5-17 years of age who have undergo orthopedic day surgical procedures for definitive management of fractures, tendon release, etc. will be randomized to receive either ibuprofen or oral morphine as needed for pain relief for 48 hours post-operatively at home. Pain will be assessed using the self-report Faces pain scale revised (FPS-R). We hypothesize that oral morphine will result in significantly lower pain scores on the Faces Pain Scale Revised (FPS-R) compared to ibuprofen. It is hoped that the results of this trial will create a new option for post-operative pain management in children.

Evaluation of the Use of Spinal Epimorph in Total Knee Arthroplasty

The purpose of this study is to determine the contribution of spinal epimorph to patient's perioperative pain management in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). This study is designed to determine whether spinal epimorph and its associated complications is a necessary addition to provide adequate analgesia given the multimodal approach to pain management. It is hypothesized that perioperative local infiltration with a cocktail of local and systemic analgesics will provide equal analgesia to patients who are given both local infiltration and spinal epimorph perioperatively.

Hypothesis: Patients who undergoing thyroidectomy without neck extension will have less post-operative pain and there are no significant difference of post-operation complications between both groups.
