Filter by:Hypothesis: Nosten® device is able to reduce the time of underinflated balloon and removes excess pressure. This device may thus reduce the risk of ventilator-acquired pneumonia (VAP) and early tracheal lesions resulting from intubation with decreased discomfort, morbidity, and nursing workload. The main objective of the investigators is to show that Nosten® device is more effective than monitoring and manual inflation of the balloon of the tracheal tube to prevent VAP occurrence.
The cough assessment is fundamental in the weaning process as it gives information on the possibility to expel food and secretion out from the airways. The majority of persons suffering from severe acquired brain injury are not able to cough voluntary due to severe cognitive deficit. In the present study, it would be evaluated the intensity of the reflex cough (RC) and the results would be correlated with weaning outcome.
Radiation pneumonitis is the most common complication and the major dose-limiting toxicity associated with radiotherapy, which can cause poor quality of life or life-threatening symptoms and might hinder the tumor-controlling effects of radiotherapy. Consequently, establishing reliable predictors for the occurrence of RP is of great significance such that the therapeutic effects of RT can be maximized while minimizing its adverse effects. The aim of this study is to figure out the biological prediction models of radiation pneumonitis.
This study evaluates the omission of incentive spirometry use following bariatric surgery. Half of participants will receive an incentive spirometer while the other half will not. Oxygen saturation and pulmonary complications after surgery will be measured to examine the effectiveness of incentive spirometry.
Background: - When bacteria enter the lungs, serious infections can occur. Researchers want to learn more about the process of inflammation in the lungs by studying lung cells and the products that they make. Lung cells are influenced by infections, smoking, and molecules made within the body. Researchers also want to learn more about one of these molecules, called microRNA (or micro ribonucleic acid). Objective: - To better how the body responds to infection. Also, to understand which cells in the lung secrete microRNA and how they may influence other lung cells. Eligibility: - Healthy, non-smoking adults ages 18-45. Design: - Participants will be screened with a medical history and physical exam. They will have blood and urine tests and an electrocardiogram. - Participants will have blood drawn from an arm vein. They will have an intravenous catheter (small plastic tube) placed in a vein. - All participants will have bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage. They will be numbed with medicine. A thin flexible tube will be placed through the nasal passages or the mouth into the airways of the lung. - Some participants will have bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (rinsing the airways with salt water) in order to obtain cells from lung. The water will then be suctioned out. - Some participants will have two bronchoscopies; during the first procedure, endotoxin, a molecule found in bacteria is squirted into a small portion of the lung. Endotoxin is a molecule that acts like an infection but isn t one. After 6 to 48 hours, bronchoscopy with with bronchoalveolar lavage will be done to look at the lung s response to endotoxin. - Participants heart rhythm and rate, temperature and blood oxygen level will be monitored during the procedures. - Participants will be called the next day to see how they are feeling.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of pediatric pneumonia. It is a multicenter randomized controlled trial.
* Hypothesis: There is an underdiagnosis of pneumonia in COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) exacerbations which could be demonstrated by performing low-dose chest CT. Differences in the inflammatory profile in sputum and blood in patients with and without pneumonia can be seen. * Objective: To assess the degree of underdiagnosis of pneumonia in COPD exacerbations, using chest low-dose CT and to compare clinical and inflammatory differences in blood and sputum between patients with and without pneumonia. *Material and Methods: Prospective observational study including 75 patients with the diagnosis of COPD at the time of an exacerbation and with criteria for a respiratory tract infection. At the time of inclusion clinical features, blood and sputum analysis, chest X-ray and chest low-dose CT are performed. The investigators divide the patients into two groups according to the existence of pneumonia and the inflammatory pattern in blood (inflammatory markers) and sputum (cell populations and inflammatory markers) is compared between the two branches.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of a structured package (bundle) in reducing the use of antimicrobials and hospital stay of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and no increase in mortality of these patients in different hospitals.
