Efficacy of a Training Program in Adults Following a Vegan Diet Versus an Omnivorous Diet

The study consisted of a non-randomized controlled clinical trial with measurements at baseline and at the end of a 16 week intervention. Participants will be assigned to the intervention or control group according to their own choice and convenience. A 4 arm split was performed where the Veg-Int group was composed of people on a vegan diet who participated in the intervention, the Veg-Con group was composed of people on a vegan diet who were part of the control group, the Omn-Int group was composed of people on an omnivorous diet who participated in the intervention, and the Omn-Con group was composed of people on an omnivorous diet who were part of the control group. The Veg-Int and Omn-Int intervention groups, participated in a physical exercise program in remote modality through a digital mHealth platform. During the 16 weeks of intervention, a total of 50 training sessions were carried out, distributed in three sessions per week, with a duration per session ranging from 40 to 50 minutes. The exercise program was designed and supervised by a physical education teacher and focused on strength training using body weight exercises targeting the major muscle groups, including upper body, lower body and abdominals. The platform recorded participants attendance and the time they spent on each exercise session. At the end of the sessions, participants had the option to evaluate and share their perception of effort during the workout through a Modified Borg scale (0-10). In addition, they were given the opportunity to communicate with the teacher via phone call, text message or e-mail, to receive feedback or raise doubts.

Physiological and Psychological Effects of Virtual Reality vs Traditional Exercise

This study aimed to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) as an alternative to traditional High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) by comparing physiological and psychological outcomes in physically active university students. The pilot randomised controlled trial utilised a parallel design involving two groups: one group performed HIIT using the Facebook Oculus Quest 2 VR headset with the "FitXR" fitness game, while the other undertook traditional HIIT training that mirrored the movements and actions of the VR game. The study's findings suggest that fully immersive VR provides a unique and potentially more enjoyable alternative to traditional HIIT, particularly because it may enhance motivation while still achieving health benefits. This pilot research study highlights VR's potential to reach high-flow states in exercise, where individuals become deeply absorbed and derive satisfaction from the activity. It also lays the groundwork for future studies involving larger sample sizes and clinical populations to further investigate the psychological and physiological impacts of VR-based exercise. In summary, this pilot randomised controlled trial found that immersive VR could be a feasible and effective alternative to traditional HIIT training, offering similar physiological benefits while enhancing exercise motivation and enjoyment. Further research is necessary to validate these preliminary results and extend them to diverse populations.

Virtual Reality Exergaming on Heart Rate, Perceived Exertion, and Technology Acceptance in Healthy Individuals

This pilot cohort study aimed to investigate the immediate impact of Virtual Reality (VR) exergaming on heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and technology acceptance using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) in healthy adults. Participants engaged in a 20-minute session of VR exergaming using the Meta Oculus Quest 2™ headset. HR and RPE were measured at baseline, during, and after the intervention, while technology acceptance was assessed pre- and post-intervention using the UTAUT questionnaire. The results showed that VR exergaming increased HR while maintaining perceived exertion at low to moderate levels. Technology acceptance also improved significantly across all domains measured by UTAUT, with particularly notable increases in Performance Expectancy and Effort Expectancy. The findings suggest that VR exergaming is an effective method to enhance physical activity, motivation, and engagement, providing promising support for its use as a rehabilitation tool for individuals struggling with adherence and motivation.

Effects of Peanut Butter on Sleep Quality and Daily Energy Levels in Fire Fighters

The purpose of this study is to examine the possible benefits of peanut butter consumption prior to bedtime on sleep and energy levels among fire fighters. Fire fighters require high levels of energy to perform their occupational tasks but commonly lack sleep as well as the amount of dietary protein and fat suggested for tactical athletes. By addressing this gap, we expect that if peanut butter consumption is shown to improve sleep and/or energy, this lifestyle change (peanut butter consumption) may be appealing to fire fighters because of the ease and low cost of peanut butter. Aim 1: Determine if consuming peanut butter prior to bedtime alters measures of sleep quality and quantity in fire fighters. It is hypothesized that firefighters who consume the peanut butter will have positive impacts in measure of sleep quality and energy levels. Virtual Reality-based Mindful Movement Therapy for Seniors

The current proposal aims to 1) develop a technical platform and implementation plan for the delivery of a virtual reality-based mindful movement therapy (VR-MMT) protocol for older adults; and 2) conduct a clinical trial to examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an 8-week, 16-session module VR-MMT intervention for this population. The findings of this study will help us to identify engagement barriers and refine the intervention contents as well as the study protocol necessary for the preparation of grant applications to conduct a controlled clinical trial. This study is innovative and high impact as this is the first study to examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a VR-MMT intervention that could potentially ameliorate cognitive and mobility decline and promote psychological wellbeing in older adults by combining a widely accessible technology and creative embodiment-based approach.

Training and Detraining Effects of a Physical Activity Program Implemented Through Mobile Applications in Adolescents.

The use of mobile applications to promote the practice of physical activity has begun to be used in the adolescent population in recent years. This has made it possible to carry out interventions inside and outside the educational setting, the latter being the ones that have brought the greatest benefits. Thus, it has been observed that the promotion of the use of mobile applications in out-of-school hours from the subject of physical education has reported significant benefits on body composition and fitness in the adolescent population. However, there is no known research that has analyzed whether the effect achieved with mobile applications when their use is mandatory disappears when they are no longer promoted from the physical education subject. Therefore, this project goes further and tries to find out whether after the ten-week period of mandatory use of the applications, adolescents continue to use the applications autonomously and the beneficial effects achieved are maintained or disappear due to the lack of use. For this purpose, a 10-week intervention was planned in which the adolescents used the mobile applications. Prior to the start of the intervention, the adolescents' body composition and fitness (pre) were measured. At the end of the intervention of mandatory use of the mobile applications, the adolescents were measured again (post). And after the post measurement, the adolescents were left for 10 weeks during which they could use the applications autonomously. A third measurement of the adolescents was performed after this 10-week period (post 2). The aim of this project was to find out the effects of stopping the use of the mobile fitness apps on body composition and fitness of the adolescents.

Effects of Caffeine Ingestion on the Biomechanics of Healthy Young Subjects

Caffeine is one of the few supplements that have enough scientific evidence to state that can notably improve performance, as different remarkable organizations in the sports nutrition context have classified it as an ergogenic aid with strong evidence regarding its efficacy and that is apparently safe. The beneficial effect of this substance on physical and cognitive performance has been identified in aerobic and anaerobic efforts, including aerobic and muscular endurance, power, or strength. However, it seems that the benefits of caffeine are usually measured only by its effect on performance, while a comprehensive analysis of its impact on other aspects of the movement technique of the exercise is not considered. Therefore, although caffeine generates better performance, a null or negative effect may occur on technique execution. As such, some consequences might arise (e.g., an increase in injury risk or a decrease in energy efficiency). The objective of this randomized controlled trial is to assess the influence of caffeine on certain biomechanical parameters of the technique of physical exercises in circumstances without fatigue and under neuromuscular fatigue. The study hypothesis is that caffeine generates modifications in the technical execution of certain movements in fatigued and unfatigued circumstances due to its physiological effects, which may be beneficial for performance and injury prevention. The participants will have to attend 5 sessions (enrollment, familiarization, control, placebo, and caffeine), at least 7 days apart. In the last 3 sessions, different measurements will be done to their technique while jumping, squatting, and running, without fatigue and with it. Other data will be collected throughout the study to contextualize and analyze in more detail the obtained information.
