Ketogenic dietary therapies (KDTs) are well-established, safe, non-pharmacologic treatments used for children and adults with drug-resistant epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Ketone bodies levels undergo a significant inter-individual and intra-individual variability and can be affected by several factors. This evidence suggests the need for personalized monitoring for diet optimization, especially at the beginning of the treatment but during whole follow-up. Possible variations in glycemia and ketone bodies' blood level according to different phases of menstrual cycle have not been systematically assessed yet, but this time window deserves special attention because of hormonal and metabolic related changes. We present the methodological protocol for a longitudinal, multicentric study aimed at searching for subtle changes in ketone bodies blood level during menstrual cycle in epileptic female patients undergoing a stable ketogenic diet. The study will be divided into two phases. The first one will be purely observational, aiming at the assessment of ketonemia during menstrual cycle. Whether this finding will be confirmed, a second phase of ketogenic diet therapy adjustment will be scheduled.
The objective of this study is to determine the effects of the ketogenic diet on the frequency of non-epileptic seizures in patients with functional neurological symptoms disorder compared to a healthy diet.
In order to increase adherence to ketogenic diet treatment, palatability of meals and diversify the foods offered to patients a ketogenic kitchen will be created. Intervention: Incorporation of culinary workshops and supply of recipes for patients undergoing ketogenic diet treatment at Instituto da Criança - HCFMUSP.
In view of the research gap in the safety of traditional ketogenic diet, there is a need for a healthy alternative to the ketogenic diet that reduces the individual's propensity to adverse diet choices. Healthy guidelines to be adopted include a diet low in saturated fat, trans fat, and sugar, along with adequate fibre. Potentially with these guidelines in effect, the associated risks for CVD would be reduced. Therefore, this study will investigate the effect of a calorie-restricted healthy ketogenic diet versus a calorie-restricted low fat diet on weight loss and metabolic outcomes among individuals with obesity.
A ketogenic diet consists of a high intake of fats and a limited intake of carbohydrates, which causes an increased level of ketone bodies in the body. In recent years, it has been shown that the diet has cardiovascular protective effects. The investigators have also shown that ketone bodies act as super-gasoline for the heart. In addition, an increased level of ketone bodies will improve memory and comprehension in humans, possibly due to increased blood flow in the brain. The purpose of the experiment is to investigate how a ketogenic diet affects the heart and brain. The theory is that an increased level of ketone bodies will improve energy utilization in the heart by reducing oxygen deficiency in the heart as well as increasing blood flow in the brain. The study participants must go through two periods of 3 weeks, during which they must eat an ordinary Danish diet and a ketogenic diet, respectively. The periods end with an examination day, where blood samples and samples from muscle and fat tissue are taken. They will also be scanned with CT, PET and MRI scans to determine their body's ability to absorb sugar, fat and ketone bodies. The investigators expect the results to be of crucial importance for dietary recommendations for people at risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
The aim of this paper was to investigate and compare the effects of two iso-energetic hypo-caloric ketogenic hyper-ketonemic and non-ketogenic low carbohydrate high fat high cholesterol diets on body-composition, muscle strength and hormonal profile in experienced resistance-trained middle-aged men. Twenty non-competitive experienced resistance-trained middle-aged men were on the supervised calorie maintenance western diet and resistance-training regimen for 4 weeks and then divided into ketogenic and non-ketogenic groups for 8 weeks period. Keto bodies (β-hydroxybutyrate) levels were measured weekly, testosterone and insulin biweekly, strength and body-composition monthly, lipid profile and blood sugar level at the beginning and at the end of the study.
Covid 19 pandemia is causing millions of deaths worldwide. To date, the evidence gathered suggests that the subgroup of patients who present the most serious clinical feature of COVID-19 could have a "cytokine storm syndrome" better defined as secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH), characterized by acute respiratory distress (ARDS) and septic shock, followed by multi-organ failure due to an excess of cytokines induced by the inflammatory response to the virus. The reduction of phagocytic hyperactivation represents a possible treatment for HLH. Lowering the availability of glucose, the only substrate of aerobic glycolysis and of the Warburg effect in activated macrophages, through the use of ketogenic diets could be a promising solution. Actually diet is not recognized as impacting on the evolution of COVID-19, however, scientific literature data show that a low carbohydrate and high lipid diet (ketogenic diet) can inhibit inflammation and lead to a clinical improvement of respiratory function. The plan is to enroll 50 patients with COVID 19 infection and administer a 1:4 ketogenic formula during hospitalization in order to verify these outcomes.
For 28 days, 30 participants aged 3 to 18 years of age (inclusive) with a condition requiring a ketogenic diet will incorporate Ketoflo into their usual dietary regime. Ketoflo is a nutritionally complete Food For Special Medical Purposes and is suitable for administration by both tube feeding and use as a sip feed. Data on gastrointestinal tolerance, participants adherence to recommended intakes and their thoughts on the product's palatability will be self-reported in Daily Study Diaries.
The study aims to investigate the impact of 2 nutritional patterns on high-frequency episodic migraine. Subjects enrolled will be randomized in two arms: a) very-low-calorie-ketogenic-diet (VLCKD), b) hypocaloric balanced non ketogenic-diet (HBD).
