Ketogenic Diet and Diabetes Demonstration Project

KDDP is a prospective, 12-month pilot study comparing the effects of a novel lifestyle program, the Ketogenic Diet and Diabetes Demonstration Project (KDDP) to those of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDDP). KDDP is modeled to mimic the delivery platform of NDPP with the exception that participants in KDDP will be placed on a medically-supervised ketogenic diet, and participants in NDPP will be placed on a low fat diet. The purpose of this study is to compare the metabolic effects of the KDDP and the NDPP on glycemic control, lipid parameters, blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and coronary artery calcium scores in individuals with either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.

This is a multicenter, prospective, observational, longitudinal study designed to describe the therapeutic value of the KetoCal® range in the maintenance of a ketogenic diet during the management of infants (from 5 months) and children up to 17 years of age (i.e. 18 years minus 1 day) with drug-resistant epilepsy. This study is being conducted according to standard medical practice. No change in diagnostic or therapeutic management habits is imposed by this study. Quality of life questionnaires are the only additional procedures for this research.

Effect of Nutritional Ketosis on Alcohol Metabolism

The research study is being conducted in health controls to better understand the effects of ketosis on brain functioning after 3 different, randomly assigned, 3-day dietary interventions and the acute effects of alcohol after consuming about 4-5 alcohol beverages. The labs visits will use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to study the brain, measuring levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), lactate, neurotransmitters glutamate, and Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Weight Loss Interventions for Obesity

Numerous barriers towards weight management among Singaporeans with obesity exists, which involves environmental and self-regulation factors (i.e. motivation and hunger). Hence, the provision of healthy ketogenic ready-to-eat meals may be a potential solution to facilitate initial weight loss through increasing motivation while reducing appetite and hunger levels among these individuals. Therefore, this study will investigate the effect of healthy ketogenic ready-to-eat meals with mHealth nutrition application versus healthy ketogenic diet (without meal provision) with the mHealth nutrition app to facilitate weight loss and improve metabolic outcomes among individuals with obesity.

The Influence of Ketogenic Diet on Lupus Nephritis Patients' Immunity

The study investigates the dietary habits in relation to low doses of omega-3 fatty acids in subcutaneous adipose tissue, disease activity and atherosclerosis. The low intake of omega-3 and high intake of carbohydrate among patients with SLE appear to be associated with worse disease activity, adverse serum lipids and plaque presence.Three-month-old mice received an injection of pristane or saline solution and were fed with different experimental diets: sunflower oil diet or extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) diet. After 24 weeks, mice were sacrificed, spleens were collected and kidneys were removed for immunoinflammatory detections. The study have demonstrated that EVOO diet significantly reduced renal damage and decreased cytokine: TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-17 production.The ketogenic diet utilizes a high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate diet that control type of food and exchange. The aim of the present study that ketogenic diet treated in SLE patients may decrease overactive immunity and associated inflammatory markers.

Ketonemia Through Menstrual Cycle

Ketogenic dietary therapies (KDTs) are well-established, safe, non-pharmacologic treatments used for children and adults with drug-resistant epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Ketone bodies levels undergo a significant inter-individual and intra-individual variability and can be affected by several factors. This evidence suggests the need for personalized monitoring for diet optimization, especially at the beginning of the treatment but during whole follow-up. Possible variations in glycemia and ketone bodies' blood level according to different phases of menstrual cycle have not been systematically assessed yet, but this time window deserves special attention because of hormonal and metabolic related changes. We present the methodological protocol for a longitudinal, multicentric study aimed at searching for subtle changes in ketone bodies blood level during menstrual cycle in epileptic female patients undergoing a stable ketogenic diet. The study will be divided into two phases. The first one will be purely observational, aiming at the assessment of ketonemia during menstrual cycle. Whether this finding will be confirmed, a second phase of ketogenic diet therapy adjustment will be scheduled.

Eucaloric Ketogenic Diet in COVID-19 Cytokine Storm Syndrome

Covid 19 pandemia is causing millions of deaths worldwide. To date, the evidence gathered suggests that the subgroup of patients who present the most serious clinical feature of COVID-19 could have a "cytokine storm syndrome" better defined as secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH), characterized by acute respiratory distress (ARDS) and septic shock, followed by multi-organ failure due to an excess of cytokines induced by the inflammatory response to the virus. The reduction of phagocytic hyperactivation represents a possible treatment for HLH. Lowering the availability of glucose, the only substrate of aerobic glycolysis and of the Warburg effect in activated macrophages, through the use of ketogenic diets could be a promising solution. Actually diet is not recognized as impacting on the evolution of COVID-19, however, scientific literature data show that a low carbohydrate and high lipid diet (ketogenic diet) can inhibit inflammation and lead to a clinical improvement of respiratory function. The hypothesis of this study is that the administration of a ketogenic diet could improve mortality, lower the access to ICU and the need of NIV. The plan is to enroll 50 patients with COVID 19 infection and administer a 1:4 ketogenic formula during hospitalization in order to verify these outcomes.

Ketogenic Diet for New-Onset Absence Epilepsy

The ketogenic diet is a medical therapy for epilepsy that is used nearly predominantly for refractory epilepsy (after 2-3 drugs have been tried and failed). However, there is both published evidence for first-line use (infantile spasms, Glut1 deficiency syndrome) and also anecdotal experience (families choosing to change the child's (or the family' own) diet rather than use anticonvulsant medications). Childhood absence epilepsy (refractory) has been published as being responsive to ketogenic diet therapy by the investigators' group previously. This is a small, prospective, 3 month trial to assess if using a modified Atkins diet is a feasible and effective option for new-onset childhood absence epilepsy. The investigators will compare to a group of children in which the parents have declined and chose to start anticonvulsant medications.
