Animal and observational research in humans suggest that specific types of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) may impair glycemic control. However, whether NNS consumption impacts glucose homeostasis in middle-aged/older adults with prediabetes is unknown, and potential mechanisms by which this could occur have yet to be identified. The overall objective of this R21 proposal is to establish proof-of-concept for alterations in glucose homeostasis following intake of saccharin, but not acesulfame potassium, in middle-aged/older adults with prediabetes compared to a eucaloric diet with no NNS.

Thyroid Function Tests and Status of Thyroid Autoantibodies in Covid-19 Patients

COVID-19 infection causes a hypersensitive immune reaction and widespread inflammation through cytokines in various organs of the body, especially the lungs. This cytokine-mediated widespread inflammation can also affect the thyroid gland, causing thyroiditis and impaired thyroid functions. The researchers evaluated thyroid function tests and thyroid autoantibodies in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 infection. Researchers excluded patients on intensive care therapy and patients with known thyroid disease. The researchers examined the relationship of thyroid hormones and thyroid autoantibodies to COVID-19 disease, white blood cells, neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio, c reactive protein, fibrinogen, procalcitonin, ferritin, and D-dimer stages in these patients. Researchers compared changes in thyroid hormones and autoantibodies in people without COVID-19 infection and without thyroid disease.

Effectiveness of Low Level Laser Therapy on Insulin Resistance and Inflammatory Biomarkers

It is an interventional study in which 60 women estimated to enroll according to random allocation and assigned into two groups equal. The study group will receive active low level laser in addition to diet recommendations while the control group will stick to the same line of treatment but with sham laser application. The laser consists of semiconductor and operates at a wavelength of 650 nanometre. The laser installed in the watch comprises 10 individual laser beams for the wrist and an additional adapter for nasal stimulation. The output power is 5 megawatt, but it can also be adjusted. The device operates at an ambient temperature of -20 to +40 ° C and a relative humidity of ≤ 85%. The laser watch can be used for a variable irradiation period of 10-60 min. the device will be applied on specific acupuncture points (N acupuncture point, Radial artery acupuncture points, and ulnar artery acupuncture points) combined with nasal laser irradiation at the same time, once per day, 3 times per week for three months

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of bone fractures, but current predictors of bone fracture seem to underestimate this risk. It is commonly known that increased levels of certain biochemical bone markers predict low-energy fractures, but the pattern of these markers in diabetics still show heterogeneity and inconsistency. Part of the pathology of diabetes is a high blood glucose level, and this can potentially influence bone turnover and thereby bone markers. Chronic inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease is shown to increase bone resorption, and the same may be the case in diabetics. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether glucose has a direct effect on bone markers or an indirect effect through intestinal hormones or inflammatory processes.

Characterization of Blood Drawn From the Pulp of Primary Molar Undergoing Pulpotomy or Pulpectomy.

Following medical history and clinical examination the children which are scheduled for treatment with suspected pulpary involved primary teeth will be selected. During the regular treatment if a pulp of primary teeth is opened and before the regular pulpotomy procedure is performed the blood that is flowing out of the pulp will be collected and stored until analyzed for the present of inflammatory markers. Clinical and radiographic evaluation will be obtained in follow up appointments if the child will remain in regular treatments in our clinic.
