Accuracy of Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements at the Arm, Calf , and Finger

The present study was designed to assess, in a population of patients admitted to the intensive care unit and already carrying an indwelling arterial catheter, the ability of combined continuous (ClearSight™) and intermittent (automatic cuff) non-invasive monitoring to detect low mean BP (<65mmHg). The intra-arterial measurement will be the reference measurement. As secondary objectives, the investigators will assess the ability of combined continuous (ClearSight™) and intermittent (automatic cuff) non-invasive monitoring to detect stage 2 hypertension, and to detect changes in BP during a cardiovascular intervention (as clinically indicated but not imposed by the study protocol). Additionally, the accuracy of both devices against the current international standard (ISO standard) will be assessed.

ADAMTS-13 and Von Willebrand Factor Levels and Activities in Children With Cirrhosis and/or Portal Hypertension

Hemostasis-related disorders are common in cirrhosis and portal hypertension. However, it is not known whether the net effect of changes in hemostasis in the sense of predisposition to hemorrhagic or thrombotic state. It is suggested that increasing the concentration and activities of Von Willebrand factor (vWF) and decline ADAMTS-13 (A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Trombospondin type 1 motif, member 13) may cause thrombophilic changes in cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in ADAMTS-13 (A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13) and von willebrand factor (vWF) levels and activities in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.

The purpose of this study is to work with primary care physicians and their staff, and with community health workers (CHWs) to improve diabetes and hypertension management, health behaviors and improve blood pressure for South Asian patients with uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension in primary care clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. The CHWs are community members who are trained to work with patients to address health needs holistically by providing information on wellness, nutrition, stress relief, and blood pressure management in a culturally-appropriate and language-appropriate manner.

Masked Hypertensive Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The general objective is to evaluate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment in patients with masked hypertension. The secondary objectives are: i) To evaluate the prevalence of different circadian patterns of BP in ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) (dipper / non-dipper); ii) To assess in these patients the relationship between compliance with CPAP treatment and the response to nocturnal BP; iii) To identify variables of the ABPM, and biomarkers that are related to the unfavourable pattern of nocturnal BP response in these patients treated with CPAP; iv) To evaluate the change in the profile of biomarkers with the treatment. Methodology: Open, parallel, prospective, randomized and controlled study in which an ABPM will be performed in individuals with masked hypertension referred to the sleep unit and diagnosed of OSA (AHI≥ 30) without sleepiness (Epworth≤18). A total of 64 subjects with OSA and masked hypertension will be recruited. It will be collected blood for the determination of biomarkers. Subsequently, they will be randomized to receive treatment with CPAP (32) or conservative treatment (32). After 3 months of initiation, ABPM and biological determinations will be repeated.

The dietary shift from animal to plant protein sources is one of the key aspects of the nutritional transition towards more sustainable food system and diets. However the metabolic implication of this shift in protein sources are still poorly understood. This project aims to characterize and understand the metabolic orientations specifically induced by animal and vegetable dietary proteins, in order to better analyze the metabolic reorientations that would result from the expected increase in the share of plant proteins in different dietary contexts, especially those of the Western type, often associated with the development of metabolic deregulations (obesity and cardiometabolic risk).
