Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine the value of including dynamic vision testing into California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Athletics' established concussion protocol. The study's hypotheses are 1) dynamic vision testing will reveal vision impairments right after a person sustains a concussion, 2) these impairments may still be present upon clearance to return to play.
This study has two main goals: 1) to refine and enhance the R2R-TBI intervention; and 2) to examine the efficacy of the R2R-TBI intervention in a randomized control trial. To achieve the second goal, we will employ a between-groups randomized treatment design with repeated measures at baseline, one-month post-randomization, and at a six-month follow-up. The two conditions will be: a) usual medical care plus access to internet resources regarding pediatric brain injury (Internet Resources Comparison group, IRC), and b) usual medical care plus the R2R-TBI intervention (Road-to-Recovery group, R2R-TBI).
The present study aims to describe the structural tissue and cell characteristics of the olfactory mucosa in patients with persistent anosmia (≥2 years) due to COVID-19 or head-trauma, in comparison to healthy individuals with intact olfactory function. In order to avoid possible age-related degenerative changes in the neuro-epithelium, both patients and controls are between 25 and 35 years of age.
The goal is to derive and a clinical decision rule for safe exclusion of traumatic brain injury without neuroimaging in head-injured ED patients who take anticoagulant medications. The objectives are to: 1. Derive and externally validate a new highly sensitive and maximally specific clinical decision rule for the exclusion of traumatic brain injury in head-injured ED patients who take anticoagulant medications; and, 2. Estimate the sensitivity and specificity of existing head injury clinical decision rules in head-injured ED patients who take anticoagulant medications.

The purpose of this study is to determine the value of including dynamic vision testing into California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Athletics' established concussion protocol. Primary aim: The primary aim of the study is to compare survival to discharge (or survival to 14 days post-operatively, whichever comes first) following emergency surgery for traumatic brain injury (TBI) across Human Development Index settings. Primary outcome measure: The primary outcome measure will be survival to discharge (or survival to 14 days post-operatively, whichever comes first) Primary comparison: Between country groups defined by human development index. Centre eligibility: Any hospital or clinic worldwide performing emergency surgery for traumatic brain injury is eligible to participate. Patient eligibility: All adult and paediatric patients admitted to the participating institution with a traumatic brain injury for which they receive emergency surgery during the selected 30-day inclusion period are eligible for inclusion in the study. Team: Individual hospital teams with up to four people, collecting data for 30 days. Time period: Local study teams may select any 30-day period from the 1st of November 2018 and the 31st of December 2019 to start their study. Patients operated on who meet the inclusion criteria between 00:01 on day 0 and 23:59 on day 30 of the selected study period will be included. Validation: We will employ a method of data validation in every centre that will give us a quantitative estimate of case ascertainment that is feasible even in low-resource centres.
Patient Power is a patient research network and database (registry) to collect prospective information about demographics, self-reported diagnoses and medications, and willingness to participate in research from participants with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthritis (SpA), other musculoskeletal conditions, chronic neurological conditions like migraine, chronic pulmonary conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, autoimmune dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, and other chronic inflammatory or immune-mediated conditions. In addition, since patients with chronic conditions often have other co-morbidities like cardiovascular health and obesity-related metabolic disorders, these conditions will also be included. Participants will provide information from their smartphones or personal computers. The information will be used by researchers and clinicians to help patients and their providers make better, more informed decisions about treatment of chronic conditions.
The purpose of this research study is to test whether a portable goggle system (I-PAS) is good at diagnosing mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in a community setting. The goal is to determine whether the IPAS goggle system can be used reliably in an urgent care or emergency department setting.
This study evaluates the effect of a physical exercise + caregiver skills training on feelings of burden, mood, and biological markers of inflammation in persons who provide care for Veterans with a TBI or dementia. Half of the caregivers will participate in a balance and flexibility + caregiver skills training program, while the other half will participate in a moderate/high intensity aerobic and resistance + caregiver skills training program.
