Efficacy of WJ-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Combination With Parathyroid Hormone for Vertebral Compression Fracture

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are serious health problems. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has gained considerable attention to treat osteoporosis and OVCFs because implanted healthy MSCs could be differentiated into osteoblasts and reduce the susceptibility of fractures by facilitating new bone formation. This study compares teriparatide (PTH 1-34) injection to combined treatment with Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs) and teriparatide (PTH 1-34) in patients with OVCFs. It is a randomized, open-label, phase 2 study.

Multicenter Validation Study of an Artificial Intelligence Tool for Automatic Classification of Chest X-rays

A current problem in Radiology Departments is the constant increase in the number of studies performed. Currently the largest volume of studies belongs to plain x-rays. This problem is intensified by the shortage of specialists with dedication and experience in their interpretation. In the field of computer science, an area of study called Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged, which consists of a computer system that learns to perform specific routine tasks, and can complement or imitate human work. Since 2018, Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires has been running the TRx program, which consists of the development of an AI-based tool to detect pathological findings in chest x-rays. The intended use of this tool is to assist non-imaging physicians in the diagnosis of chest x-rays by automatically detecting radiological findings. The present multicenter study seeks to externally validate the performance of an AI tool (TRx v1) as a diagnostic assistance tool for chest x-rays.

Weight Bearing for Fibular Fractures

It is common practice to restrict weight bearing after ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) until week 6 postoperatively. However, controversy exists surrounding the optimal postoperative protocol. At our institution, all ankle fractures are made non-weight bearing for 6 weeks across the board. Isolated lateral malleolar fractures after ORIF may benefit from earlier weight bearing in terms of patient satisfaction, short-term functionality, and return to work. The purpose of this study is to determine if early weight bearing at 2 weeks postoperatively for isolated lateral malleolar fractures leads to a higher satisfaction with surgery as compared to standard protocol for postoperative ankle fractures and better functional outcomes

A Study Evaluating Splinting and Casting for Distal Radius Fractures in the Elderly

Distal radial fractures are the most common fracture of the upper extremity in adults, with a higher incidence in those 65 years of age or older. In 2009, Karl et al demonstrated that there are 25.42 distal radial fractures in this age group per 10,000 person-years in the US. Despite the frequency of distal radius fractures, there is still debate over the best method of treatment. In contrast to younger patients, patients who are 65 years or older appear to have acceptable functional outcomes and treatment satisfaction regardless of the presence of malalignment on radiographic imaging.Therefore, nonsurgical management has been shown to be a viable treatment option. The purpose of this study is to compare non-operative treatment with a removable splint versus a short arm cast for distal radial fractures in patients who are 65 years of age or older who are indicated for non-operative fracture treatment.

Three Year Evaluation of a Cohort of Patients Presenting Osteoporotic Fractures

A specialized osteoporosis clinic has existed in our hospital since 2010. The descriptive retrospective analysis of patients included in this pathway was the subject of a first study on patients included between January 2010 and January 2011 and reported to the Congress of the French Society of Rheumatology (SFR) in December 2011, then a second study on patients included between January 2012 and December 2016, presented as an e-poster at the SFR Congress in December 2017 and in a poster at the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Conference (ASBMR) in October 2018 and published in 2019 in Archives of Osteoporosis. The effectiveness specialized osteoporosis clinics is the subject of numerous publications. It therefore seems important to evaluate the effectiveness of our management, 3 years from the date of inclusion of patients in the osteoporosis clinic of our hospital.
