Surgical vs Conservative Treatment of Displaced Intra-articular Calcaneal Fractures: A Prospective RCT

Between 1994-98 5 hospitals in Stockholm investigated calcaneal fractures in a randomised study. 82 patients were included and randomized either to non-surgical treatment or surgical management with extensile lateral approach and reduction with Internal fixation (ORIF) The patients were followed and investigated at fixed intervals 2 weeks, 8 weeks, 3 months and 6 months for clinical review. At 1 year and 8-12 years (mean 10 years) post-injury. Both clinical radiological data were collected and several scores were used. The primary outcomes scores used were SF-36 and VAS score. The results after 1 year and mean 10 years are presented.

Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: Can Kyphoplasty Improve Lung Function? A Prospective Evaluation

Patients with vertebral fractures often have problems to straighten and as a consequence of impaired lung ventilation that leads to a impaired lung function. Furthermore, it comes to the sintering of the vertebra and a so-called hunchback. This also contributes to the poorer expansion of the lung. Pain is also caused by respiratory excursions of the chest which hinder the patients to use their entire lung volume. Kyphoplasty is designed to counter all these consequences of vertebral fractures by bringing stability to the fracture. In order to prove the thesis the results of lung function test (FEV1, PEF) are assessed.

The purpose is to examine whether these drugs slow bone healing and what relationship there is between different bone examinations, scan for osteoporosis, bone marker laboratory tests, radiological controls and histology of newly formed bone under a microscope.

Ibuprofen Versus Codeine. Is One Better for Post-operative Pain Relief Following Reduction of Paediatric Forearm Fractures?

For simple fractures treated in the emergency department with cast immobilisation only, ibuprofen has been shown to be superior to, or a least or equivalent to codeine with less side effects. These and other studies have commented that their results may not be applicable to children who have fractures that require reduction. There is currently no literature on the management of postoperative pain following reduction of paediatric fractures. The investigators aim therefore is to investigate whether either of the two most commonly prescribed analgesics is superior to the other for postoperative pain management following closed reductions of paediatric forearm fractures. Also, if one agent has more side effects than the other.

Observational Retrospective and Prospective Study on the Treatment of Femoral Fractures With EBA2

This is an observational, retrospective and prospective study where subjects who have undergone surgery with EBA2 medical device for lateral proximal femoral fractures will be followed for data collection since the day before their surgery (retrospectively) until day 180 after surgery (retrospectively and prospectively). This study is aimed at collecting data from patients who have already been treated with EBA2 nail. Data collection will cover the details of the fracture and surgery (from which the retrospective nature of the study), as well as details of follow up visits after surgery that patients routinely carry out up to 6 months (from which the prospective nature of the study). The study will be conducted in three clinical sites in Italy.

Radiostereometric Analysis of Fracture Healing in Distal Femur Fractures

The investigators are doing this research study to look at how distal femoral fractures (knee bone break) heal. In this study, the investigators will use Radiostereometric Analysis (RSA) to look at how the pieces of femur bone move as the bone heals. RSA is a special x-ray that uses radiographs to measure very small movements in the bone over time. The question that will be answered by this study is whether RSA can be used as a tool to monitor fracture healing.

An Optimal Treatment for Avulsion Fractures of the Base of Fith Metatarsal Bone

Avulsion fractures of the base (tuberosity) of fifth metatarsal bone are the most common fractures in the foot, frequently treated in fracture clinics and involving significant resources. At present methods of treatment and follow up vary widely from no active treatment to surgery, depending entirely on a treating doctor preference. There is no agreement on simple, safe and reliable method of treatment. The investigators believe that vast majority of these injuries heal well on its own without any specific treatment. By comparing two most commonly used treatments the investigators aim to establish one simple, safe and reliable mode of treatments. The investigators are going to evaluate functional results of these two treatments in a short and longer time prospective, by using the best available scientific tools. The investigators believe that results of the investigators study will eventually lead to change of practise and more efficient NHS care for these patients. It will reduce unnecessary treatments and clinic appointments, and bring substantial savings to the NHS in a long prospective.
