Analgesic Effect of Acupuncture for Patients With Rib Fractures

Traumatic rib fractures are common, resulting from significant forces impacting on the chest, and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Acute pain management in inpatients with traumatic rib fractures has been highly emphasized by practitioners. Inappropriate analgesia may cause respiratory complications, including pneumonia, atelectasis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and prolonged hospital stay. These may be prevented or reduced by good analgesic therapy. This study is aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of acupuncture on traumatic rib fractures.

Evaluation of Multidisciplinary Recovery After Surgery Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology

The aim of the recovery protocol is to reduce surgical trauma, postoperative pain, and complications, shorten hospital treatment and improve postoperative recovery. Orthopedic and traumatology surgeries are often followed by a long-lasting recovery with difficulties of everyday functioning. Up to this time, only a few publications of multidisciplinary protocol in orthopedics and traumatology have been published, mostly to improve the care of patients after elective surgical procedures. The goal of multidisciplinary after surgery recovery program in orthopedics and traumatology is to improve the care of both urgent and elective patients using standardized, multi-professional care programs. It focuses on patient education, preoperative respiratory training, adequate nutritive and hemodynamic support, modified anesthesia protocol, prevention of postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, and early postoperative delirium detection. The implementation of the program will reduce the rate of postoperative complications and the rate of rehospitalization, enhance the recovery after surgery and increase the satisfaction with the treatment.

This study is an ancillary study to the Utilizing Protein During Weight Loss to Impact Physical Function (UPLIFT) trial (NCT03074643) to evaluate the effects of diet composition (i.e., amount of protein and carbohydrate) during a 6-month weight loss intervention and 12-months of follow-up on bone phenotypes in obese older adults. Participants will receive either a protein or carbohydrate supplement along with a behavioral weight loss intervention.

Using the Transconjuctival Approach Alone Versus Using it Together With Lateral Canthotomy in Orbital Fractures

All cases will undergo surgery under general anesthesia. Evaluation of patients with suspected orbital fracture should involve radiologic examination, motility test, diplopia field test and exophthalmometry. Plain X-ray films, although rarely used, with the Caldwell and Waters view may be done as a screening evaluation for possible fractures and foreign bodies. An orbital computed tomography, the gold standard in trauma, CT with contiguous thin axial and coronal sections should be ordered to confirm the diagnosis and plan for treatment Postoperative care: Proper postoperative instructions will be given the patient, in addition to the postoperative medications including antibiotics, corticosteroids and analgesics.
