Filter by:Excess energy, obesity and obesity-related diseases are important global health issues. Although it is known that obesity is an issue of energy balance, the components of energy expenditure seem to be inter-related in complex non-additive ways. The aim of this study is to explore the downstream impacts of exercise on short term changes in both expenditure and energy intake. The primary question the investigators are asking is whether moderate to high intensity exercise influences the basal energy expenditure and/or energy intake/macronutrient preference in young adult males? (A similar study will be performed on females in a different registration). The investigators will use a specially designed feeding table to measure energy intake and macronutrient intake, which is easy to quantify intake compensation. Basal metabolism will be measured by hood indirect calorimetry. The investigators will explore the factors that influence the level of compensation in expenditure and intake, in particular body composition. Participants will be asked to come to the lab after 10 hours fast for body composition tests including Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry(DXA), Magnetic Resonance Image(MRI) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis(BIA). They will then be asked (not) to do 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise after an energy-limiting breakfast, during which metabolic rate levels and changes in dietary composition will be recorded by gas exchange and standardized buffet. In addition, participants' subjective hunger and preferences will also be recorded by questionnaires. Venous blood will be collected to measure metabolic and hormone factors, blood glucose will be measured by Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor (CGM).
The investigator's goal is to promote a plant-based diet amongst the underserved urban population of Louisville with the help of educational aids and the provision of affordable resources.
The goal of this pilot study is to test the feasibility of assessing how biological factors and chemical properties of sugars may influence metabolism and food reward in humans. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Can differences in appetitive responses and neural activations to sucrose (table sugar) and its chemical components (glucose and fructose) be measured and quantified? - Are there detectable differences in how combinations of sugars and non-nutritive sweeteners commonly found in our food supply influence appetitive responses and neural activation? This study is a crossover design, meaning every participant will complete every condition. Participants will consume beverages containing sucrose, glucose, or fructose, which are each novelly flavored, 6 times within a week. During one of the consumption times, energy expenditure, carbohydrate oxidation, and blood glucose will be measured in the lab before and for 2 hours after consumption. After participants have consumed each condition, they will undergo a tasting task in the MRI scanner, neural responses to receipt of the beverages are measured. Another group of participants will undergo the same study design but with sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, or sucrose + non-nutritive sweetener as the conditions.
The goal of this clinical trial is to examine the effects of a nutrition education program on preschool children's food literacy and food acceptance, and to examine the added influence of a healthy eating curriculum and parent education on children's food knowledge and healthful food choices. The project will be evaluated with 450 children ages 3 to 5 years in center-based childcare programs serving predominantly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-eligible families in Pennsylvania. Outcomes for children who receive the added healthy eating curriculum will be compared to children in classrooms that only receive the nutrition education program.
The study will include women enrolled during the second trimester of pregnancy who will be provided with a specific amount per month for 10 months to purchase produce. Women will be provided with up to three nutrition education sessions and will be sent text message reminders to redeem their incentives every month and to provide them with nutrition tips. The study will use a co-design approach to utilize feedback from potential participants as well as participants at multiple time points in the process to improve the intervention and make it more relevant and impactful to our population.
The goal of this study is to compare metabolic response to variations in dietary glycemic index in healthy participants. The main questions it aims to answer are: • What are the metabolic hunger and food intake responses to different levels of glycemic index on the background of otherwise constant macronutrient composition? Participants will come to the lab after an overnight fast and body composition will be tested by bio-impedance analysis and magnetic resonance imaging. They will then be randomized to eat one of three standardized breakfasts varying in the glycemic index. Circulating glucose levels will be monitored using a continuous glucose monitor and blood samples will be collected to measure metabolic and hormone factors in the serum. Participants will also rate their hunger at 0, 30, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 minutes. After 5 hours they will eat a free choice meal from a standardized selection buffet (test meal).
The goal of this observational study is to compare different work schedules in adults above 30 years of age. Shift and rotational work have become increasingly common owing to the demand for 24/7 availability, especially in the province of Newfoundland, where a large cohort of workers are involved in shift working hours. There is an emerging body of evidence linking shift work with adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Short and poor-quality sleep usually results from repeated exposure to shift work, leading to disturbed circadian rhythms and energy balances. The main question this study aims to answer is the effect of shift and rotational work on physical activity, sleep and food choices in adults. Participants are required to do the following: 1. Wearing an actigraphy watch, which is very similar to any other wristwatch, for seven days to objectively record their physical activity and sleep. 2. Participants will be asked to do two 24-hour food recalls using Automated Self-Administered 24-hour (ASA24), a free dietary assessment web-based tool. 3. Fill out a few questionnaires regarding demographics, chronotype (evening or morning preference), work schedule, sleep quality, stress levels, and physical activity levels. This is a field-based observational study collecting data both objectively and subjectively. The target population comprises 15 shift workers, 15 rotational workers and 15 daytime workers. This study will involve two visits to the lab. At the baseline, after taking informed written consent, anthropometric measurements, which include height, weight, and blood pressure, will be taken. Along with that, demographic, work schedule, and chronotype questionnaires will be filled. Participants will be instructed how to use the Actigraphy watch, ASA24, and sleep diary at home. After 7 days, participants will be asked to return to the lab to return the material. Participants will be asked to complete the physical activity, sleep quality and stress questionnaires. This study aims to monitor free-living behaviours in actual shift workers while participants are engaged in real-life work shifts.
In this project, the investigators will explore the cognitive neuroscience of intentional action in relation to food behaviour. To unravel how the brain systems involved in intentional control of actions and how these interact with the reward system in different physiological conditions and in relation to lean-weight or obesity, the investigators will manipulate the degree of intentionality of the behaviours under examination and the level of satiety of the participants.
Previous research has shown that nutritional knowledge is a key indicator in healthy eating choices, but real-life examinations of the associations between both nutritional knowledge and state of hunger and satiety on individuals' food choice of healthy vs unhealthy snacks is limited. The present study aims to investigate whether the presence of nutritional information on food labels will affect participants' food choice when hungry and when satiated.
