Filter by:Eating disorders are severe mental illnesses, mainly affecting adolescent- and young adult women. The prognoses for eating disorders are relatively poor, and a large part of patients with these illnesses do not benefit from available conventional therapies. After decades of research into the causes of eating disorders, there is now compelling evidence for specific neuropsychological difficulties in patients affected by eating disorders. These neuropsychological difficulties are characterized by cognitive and behavioral rigidity (poor set-shifting abilities), as well as difficulties related to central coherence, planning and impulse control. Surprisingly, few therapies specifically target these difficulties, and they are rarely incorporated into treatment. Cognitive Remediation Therapy has shown promising results as an adjunctive therapeutic intervention for patients with anorexia Nervosa. The primary aim of this randomized controlled trial is thus to investigate the effect of Cognitive Remediation Therapy on neuropsychological function, symptoms of eating disorders and general mental health, quality of life and motor activity in women with both eating disorders (transdiagnostic) and these specific cognitive difficulties.
This study aims to compare a new electronic instrument called (here referred to as the 'Body App') with traditional paper and pencil rating scales for assessing how individuals with eating disorders evaluate their body image.
Eating Disorders (ED) constitute a serious public health issue that affects predominantly women and appears typically in adolescence or early adulthood. ED are extremely difficult to treat as these disorders are ego-syntonic and many patients do not seek treatment. As ED are associated with significant adverse medical and psychological consequences, it is vital to focus on the development of successful prevention programs. Even though, in the last two decades significant steps have been made over the development of efficacious and effective ED prevention programs, there is room for improvement in regards to effect sizes. Prevention programs for ED to date have focussed on either reducing the pursuit of the thin ideal or on disputing and replacing unrealistic thoughts with regard to food, body and weigh. There is a growing body of evidence supporting the functional relationship between ED symptomatology and control of emotional states either by avoiding or inhibiting emotional responses. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and acceptability of a digital Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based prevention program in comparison to a wait-list control group for young women identified to be at risk for ED. The goals of the study were to describe the development of the AcceptME protocol and digitalized program, assess participants' feedback and the acceptability of the program, and examine the effectiveness of the ACT-based prevention program compared to a wait-list control group. This prevention program has several innovations: a) it is based on ACT theory and practices; b) it uses gamification principles to create a program appealing to adolescents; c) it targets behaviour change in individuals via helping a digital character overcome difficulties in the digitalized program.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Mindfulness Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT) for patients who have had bariatric surgery on their weight and mental and physical health compared to patients who do not do this group. All participants will complete questionnaires evaluating eating and mental health before and after the group and 6 and 12 months later. They will have blood pressure readings at these times and complete a questionnaire about their digestive health. Our hypothesis is that participants will maintain their weight loss after bariatric surgery and have improvements in the other outcomes.
This study of adolescent eating disorders (ED) will examine the association of temperament-based classifications, brain activation during incentive processing, and ED symptoms at time of scan and 1 year later to better understand the neurobiology and symptoms of ED. We will recruit 150 females currently ill with an ED and 50 controls ages 14-17 to investigate how temperaments reflecting greater inhibition, impulsivity, or effortful control correspond to 1) clinical symptoms and 2) the brain's response to anticipation and outcome of salient stimuli, and 3) by collecting follow-up clinical data one year later, identify how temperament-based subtypes predict ED symptom change (e.g., clinical prediction). Data collection will rely on a technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
Eating disorders are multifactorial disorders currently conceptualized in a biopsychosocial model, but pathophysiology remains relatively unknown, and robust etiological models to guide treatment are therefore lacking. Different endophenotypes and neurocognitive vulnerability factors have been found in eating disorders including decision making abnormalities. The investigators hypothesize that decision making abnormalities are associated with a lower level of functioning and quality of life which could lead to social and interpersonal difficulties. The investigators also hypothesize that these anomalies are associated with a particular clinical profile (more restrictive profile, more hyperactivity, less insight on the disease and desire for care ...).
This study has two aims: 1) to test the validity of an eating disorder symptom checklist against an established clinical interview; and 2) to examine whether providing eating disorder patients with visual graphs of their symptom frequency in the early sessions of active treatment will lead to higher numbers of patients achieving a "rapid response" (65% reduction in symptoms in the first 4 weeks of treatment). Groups where patients receive visual graphs of symptom frequency will be compared with groups where patients do not receive visual graphs of symptom frequency on rates of rapid response to cognitive behavior treatment for eating disorders.
Eating disorders (ED) are serious mental illnesses with an excess mortality and many affects in the quality of life of patients and thier relatives. Management of ED is very difficult : the prognosis remains relatively poor both in terms of remission rate and quality of life. In this context, the contribution of new strategies for pathophysiological exploration and the development of therapeutic options are crucial. In this project the investigators aim to constitute un cohort of patients from a day unit specialized in the management of ED. A prospective follow-up will be offered to patients to assess their clinical and psycho-social evolution. The overall objective is to identify which factors are prognostic of clinical improvement of the ED. We also want to better characterize patients that will migrate from diagnosis to another.
In this study the investigators will seek to improve their understanding of how positive and negative valence systems, cognition, and arousal/interoception are inter-related in disorders of trauma, mood, substance use, and eating behavior for women involved in a court diversion program in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Women in Recovery). The investigators will recruit 100 individuals and use a wide range of assessment tools, neuroimaging measures, blood and microbiome collections and behavioral tasks to complete the baseline and follow-up study visits. Upon completion, the investigators aim to have robust and reliable dimensional measures that quantify these systems and a set of assessments that should be recommended as a clinical tool to enhance outcome prediction for the clinician and assist in determining who will likely benefit from the diversion program, and to inform future revision or augmentation of the program to increase treatment effectiveness.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a daily 12-month computerized mindfulness-based intervention in obese patients diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) on: impulsive eating, motivation toward exercise, and weight loss.
