Filter by:The goal of this clinical trial is to test if a mindfulness-enhanced positive affect induction (MPAI) works well to reduce pain intensity and pain unpleasantness from a cold water pain test in undergraduate college students who do not endorse ongoing medical or mental health diagnoses. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Is the MPAI a feasible and acceptable psychological technique for managing brief pain? - Does the MPAI work well to reduce pain intensity and unpleasantness from experimentally induced brief pain, compared to those using a breathing meditation or those instructed to respond naturally. - Does using the MPAI work well to improve confidence in self-managing brief pain? Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires about their sleep, pain beliefs, and emotions after consenting to participate and at the end of the study session. They will then be randomized to either: - Use the MPAI for managing pain induced by a cold water test (placing their hand in a container of cold water kept at approximately 5 degrees Celsius). - Use a breathing meditation for managing pain induced by a cold water test (placing their hand in a container of cold water kept at approximately 5 degrees Celsius). - Respond naturally to pain induced by a cold water test (placing their hand in a container of cold water kept at approximately 5 degrees Celsius). Researchers will compare the MPAI group to the breathing meditation and natural response groups to see if the MPAI group reports less pain from the cold water test and
The goal of this intervention trial is to learn test whether participation in the Building Health Life Skills Program leads to improvements in psychological well-being and stress management skills for people who are experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Will participation in the Building Healthy Life Skills Program lead to better skills in managing negative emotions? - Will participation in the Building Healthy Life Skills Program lead to improvements in psychological well-being, sleep quality, and health-related quality of life? Participants will be asked to complete three surveys: one prior to the first session of the program, one at the end of the program, and one three months later. The surveys include measures of skills for managing negative emotions, mood states, sleep quality, health-related quality of life, illness experiences, and history of childhood adversity.
This pilot study aims to inform decision-making for a bigger study we intend to conduct in the future. The larger investigation will explore how helpful a treatment program for youth (ages 17 - 24) with emotion dysregulation (ED) is, as well as how this program affects the brain. The current pilot study will also explore these topics, but on smaller scale.The treatment program we are researching is called Emotion Regulation Skills (ERS). It is based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST), a type of skills-focused therapy for individuals who experience severe ED. ERS has been updated to be friendlier to youth and involves learning skills for how to: (1) be more present in the moment, (2) effectively manage and respond to emotional experiences, (3) communicate your needs to others, and (4) increase your ability to tolerate distress.
Self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) are a serious public health concern, particularly for youth involved in the juvenile justice system (JJS), which the Georgia State Juvenile Justice System (GAJJS) intends to address by the implementation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in its JJS facilities. This proposal aims to support and study the GAJJS' pilot implementation of DBT at its facilities using a mixed-methods cross-over design involving a three-phase clinical trial assessing the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of DBT-A adapted for youth in the GAJJS. By the end of the proposed project, the investigators will have (1) established a research team to continue researching SITB interventions in the GAJJS, (2) developed protocols for implementing and evaluating DBT-A adapted for the JJS delivered in person and via telehealth, and (3) preliminary data on the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of DBT-A adapted for the JJS.
This study will explore the functioning of a mobile transdiagnostic emotion regulation intervention designed for university students to optimize the uptake and the effectiveness of the intervention.
This study will examine the effects of social support on threat vigilance and arousal using eye tracking. We will also test the moderating effects of trauma and discrimination history.
The present study is a group randomized trial assessing the impact of mindfulness and yoga training on the health, performance, and well-being of soldiers in Basic Combat Training (BCT). Randomization occurred at the platoon level, and platoons received either a combined mindfulness and yoga regimen or training as usual.
This study tests the impact of mindfulness vs. relaxation training on psychological threat and challenge, emotions/emotion regulation, motivation/engagement, and performance among undergraduates enrolled in introductory physics courses. Data used to compare groups will be collected from a variety of sources, including self-report surveys, experience sampling and daily diary assessments, physics learning activities, and academic records.
This project aims to develop and evaluate if an internet delivered psychological intervention for transgender individuals undergoing assessment for gender dysphoria and a support person, is feasible, acceptable and effective in increasing emotional skills, strengthening a healthy identity development, social support and resilience to current and future mental illness. In two studies, a psychological treatment for transgender adults (18+) seeking health care for gender dysphoria and a support person (i.e., relative, friend) will be evaluated. Studying can be a difficult time, and some students can find it challenging to deal with stress. This research project at Virginia Commonwealth University aims to understand how two different online stress management training programs affect students' daily experiences and activities. This research project will help us understand how those training programs help students to improve their emotional well-being.
