Central indicators of psychological functioning such as difficulties in emotion regulation and habitual problems in one's relating to others are likely to have been substantially impacted by the COVID-19 amelioration measures of societal lock-down and physical (ne social) distancing. In turn, as these amelioration measures have been relaxed, that impact will presumably be reduced, gradually returning these factors to pre-crisis levels. Also, these factors are likely to predict mental health outcomes such as symptoms of depression and anxiety throughout the pandemic and beyond, so that levels of emotion regulation difficulties and interpersonal problems early on will predict later symptom status. Similarly reductions in such difficulties during the various phases of the outbreak will be associated with a concurrent reduction in psychological symptoms and reduced symptom levels at later stages.
This study will enroll 180 Veterans at a 2:1 ratio where 120 Veterans will be enrolled into a brief transdiagnostic peer supported webSTAIR (BPS webSTAIR) and 60 will be supported into Waitlist. The purpose of the study is to assess the efficacy BPS webSTAIR in regard to four outcomes: reduction in PTSD and depression symptoms (measured by the PCL-5 and PHQ-8, respectively) and improvement in emotion regulation and work and social adjustment (measured by the DERS-16 and WSAS, respectively). The active treatment is a 6-session modular treatment that focuses on learning emotion management skills where Particpants will have 10 weeks to complete the treatment. Assessments will occur three times for those in webSTAIR: baseline, post-treatment (10 weeks after randomization) and 8-week follow-up and twice for those on waitlist (baseline and 10 weeks after randomization). It is hypothesized that BPS WebSTAIR will be superior to the Waitlist condition on all four outcomes. Mixed Effects Models will be used to evaluate the outcomes.
Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) often continue to experience anxiety, depression, isolation, and other psychosocial distress due to the severe nature of the transplant experience. Storytelling interventions that provide an opportunity for emotional disclosure have shown preliminary efficacy to alleviate psychosocial distress and improve emotion regulation during health challenges. Not only are these changes observed in response to such interventions, but they can also be directly strengthened with HRV biofeedback (HRVB) training, a device-driven breath pacing practice that uses colored light signals to provide feedback to increase vagal tone and improve emotional responses and sleep quality by regulating negative affect and stress. This randomized controlled trial will explore the effects of HRV biofeedback (HRVB) training combined with a digital storytelling intervention and changes in psychosocial distress with a modified waitlist control in a population of Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) patients.
Background: The ability to retrieve specific memories is a cognitive and emotional protective factor. Among the most effective techniques to generate autobiographical memories is the use of audio-visual stimuli, particularly images. Developing and improving techniques that facilitate the generation of such memories could be highly effective in the prevention of depressive symptoms, especially in the elderly population. The aim of the present study is to examine how the level of personal relevance of pictures as autobiographical memory cues to induce positive emotions may affect an individual's emotion regulation. Methods: The participants, 120 older adults aged 65 and over and 120 young adults aged between 18 and 35, of both sexes and without depressive symptoms, will be induced to a negative mood state by means of viewing a film clip. Following the negative mood induction, the participants will be shown positive images according to experimental group to which they were randomly assigned (high personal relevance: personal autobiographical photographs; medium personal relevance: pictures of favourite locations associated with specific positive autobiographical memories; and low personal relevance: positive images from the International Affective Picture System). The investigators will analyse the differences in subjective (responses to questionnaires) and objectives measures (EEG signal, heart rate variability and electrodermal activity) between the groups before and after the induction of negative affect and following the recall of positive memories. Discussion: The use of images associated with specific positive autobiographical memories may be an effective input for inducing positive mood states, which has potentially important implications for their use as a cognitive behavioural technique to treat emotional disorders, such as depression, which are highly prevalent among older adults.
To investigate the potential deficits in emotion and craving regulation capacities of drug-naïve young adults with Internet gaming disorder as compared with healthy controls.
The purpose of this study is to see how people respond on a word completion task relates to how they behave and respond to situations in the real world. This is a two part research study. At time-point one, participants will fill out some brief personality surveys. They will also read several short scenarios and imagine how they would react and/or interpret these situations in real life. They will also complete a vocabulary task where they will sort word fragments based on type as quickly as they are able. Participants will be asked to return in 24-96 hours for part two where they will repeat a similar scenario reading activity as during time one and fill out a brief questionnaire about your recent behaviors.
The aim of this study is to study the effectiveness of interprofessional advanced cardiac life support (IP-ACLS) training in improving collaborative skills, self-efficacy and emotion regulation among fourth-year nursing students using a prospective, open-label, non-randomized controlled design. The investigators hypothesized that students who participated in the IP-ACLS training are more likely to have better: 1. collaborative skills 2. self-efficacy 3. emotion regulation.
The study is aimed at comparing the differential effects of two widely used standardized meditation programs: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) in general population samples. To address this goal, the effects will be measured by self-report questionnaires belonging to different domains (mindfulness, compassion, well-being, psychological distress, and psychological functioning) as well as information processing measures (i.e., Attentional Blink), and psychophysiological measures (EEG and EKG). Changes will be assessed immediately after finishing the 8-week programs and through several inter-session assessments. Data analysis will include the mean change scores differences, as well as novel network analysis procedures to assess topological reorganization of constructs derived from the programs.
The present experimental study aims to explore the effect of an interactive smart toy on children's stress modulation during a stressful experience compared to a non-interactive prototype. It is expected that children given the interactive prototype will experience faster and more effective stress modulation, in comparison to those being given the non-interactive prototype. These findings will complement the ecologically valid data from week-long at-home deployments of the interactive prototype with families with low socioeconomic status.
