Effect of Weight Management Programs on Cardiometabolic Risk Profile in Overweight Women

Aim of this prospective randomized study was to evaluate whether a diet with meal replacements can be as effective as a conventional energy-restricted modified diet on weight loss, body composition and cardiometabolic risk profile in overweight women. Moreover, the impact of these two different weight management strategies was observed on cardiometabolic risk profile after a self-directed weight stabilization phase following the weight loss phase. After that, the effect of a specific micronutrient composition with omega-3 fatty acids versus placebo on cardiometabolic risk was observed during a following phase of weight loss maintenance.

Survivors of childhood cancer are known to be at higher risk of developing premature, serious cardiovascular disease compared with the general population. Hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes increase this risk beyond that attributable to one's original cancer therapy exposures. Research has shown that childhood cancer survivors also have a high burden of underdiagnosis and undertreatment of these potentially modifiable conditions. The goal of this study is to: 1. To determine the prevalence of underdiagnosis and undertreatment of common cardiometabolic conditions (i.e., hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes) in survivors of childhood cancer at high-risk of future serious cardiovascular disease. 2. Among survivors who are found to be underdiagnosed or undertreated, to determine (via randomized clinical trial) the efficacy of an educational intervention to improve control of these cardiometabolic conditions. 3. Determine barriers on among survivors enrolled on the randomized trial and their primary healthcare providers that contribute to undertreatment of the study's targeted cardiometabolic conditions.

Further studies are needed to establish the optimal diet for treating T2D. The investigators wishes to investigate whether a low carbohydrate diet, high in monounsaturated fats (LCD) will affect cardiovascular function, metabolism and the liver. 135 participants with T2D, will be following either a LCD, or a regular diabetes diet (RDD) for 6 months. Measurements and investigations will be performed at baseline and after 6 months.

Basic treatment of type 2 diabetes should focus on diet, physical activity and lifestyle. Nevertheless, in early and late stage of T2DM, lifestyle intervention is mostly substituted by pharmacological intervention, although lifestyle modification and dietary treatment would be favourable. The researchers therefore investigate dietary strategies such as low-carb and very-low calory diets regarding their potential to improve metabolism and body weight in (mostly) long-term T2DM patients. This core comparison is dealt with in the DiNA-D study (published elsewhere). POLYPHEM targets specific dietary approach to preserve the achieved metabolic improvements from DiNA-D phase 1. Nutritional factors will be PUFAs and BCAAs.
